1. Update on the UCLA Extension Dean Search Committee and the UCLA Partnership
Committee:
It is unclear if the new UCLA Extension Dean position has been officially posted. The Search
Committee for the new Dean is:
Gary Strong, Chair (University Librarian)
Karim Cherif (Director, Business & Management – UCLA Extension)
Massimo Ciavolella (Italian)
Sebastian Edwards (Anderson School)
Jan de Leeuw (Statistics)
Nick Hernandez (Assistant Executive Dean, Letters & Science)
Margaret Leal-Sotelo (Assistant Director, Center for Community Partnership)
William McDonald (Film & Television)
Sam Morabito (Vice Chancellor, Business & Admin. Services)
Maurice Salter (UCLA Foundation Board of Directors)
Professor DeNardo will meet with Gary Strong, Search Committee Chair, to brief him on several
issues the CCCE has uncovered. Previously, Professor De Leeuw has said that he intends to
brief the Search Committee.
UCLA Partnership Committee: The charge for this committee is "To review all
internal UNEX documents pertaining to campus partnerships; to account for all existing UNEXcampus partnerships; to assess areas of need for developing UNEX-campus partnerships; and
to recommend innovative actions that will advance future UNEX-campus partnerships."
Professor DeNardo, De Leeuw, and AVP Ruth Sabean urged the Partnership Committee to be
more proactive in developing relationships with internal campus entities. Professor DeNardo
advised the Partnership Committee on items that will spark the faculty’s attention. Professor
Garrett noted that the lack of connection between Extension and many parts of campus is well
documented in their 8-year program review. Many faculty are uninformed about Extension’s
1
capability. Several members noted that CCCE has the opportunity to promulgate Extension’s
potential. Dean Menninger said that the Partnership Committee has a clearer picture of what
needs to be done to build relations with other campus entities. Reportedly, some Extension
staff members are concerned about the Dean Search Committee’s level of understanding of
Extension. The Search Committee will proceed with their search and not wait for the arrival of
a new Chancellor.
2. Statewide UC picture for Extension:
What is the statewide University of California picture for community and continuing education?
What are the most important documents governing Extension at UC? Are there UC policies
precluding Extension offering degrees? CCCE would like to gather any and all documents on
these topics. Previously, Dean Menninger said that the regulations do not necessarily prohibit
Extension granting degrees; rather the regulations do not include Extension to grant degrees.
Approvals for degrees would go through the normal channels of the Undergraduate Council and
Graduate Council. There is a council of UC Extension Deans, this group is very informal.
Professor Garrett asked if there are 10 to 15 high impact examples of continuing education from
the other UCs. This might show that UCLA Extension is an outlier among UCs. It might help to
show how faculty could benefit financially in working for Extension and help us identify
particular academic departments that might be provided with information.
Master of Advanced Study (MAS): The MAS had its origins in the 1990s as a Presidential
initiative to expand master’s-level instruction for working adults. Elements of the MAS include
convenient scheduling of classes, a strong focus on career education, and the use of the widely
distributed Extension core programs. Dean Menninger will provide a grid showing the
involvement of Extensions in Master’s degree programs throughout the UC system. Possible
candidates for the MAS at UCLA Extension Program in Interior and Environmental Design, the
Landscape Architecture program, Finance, and Marketing.
Distance Learning: Approximately 15% to 20% of UCLA Extension courses are offered online.
Dean Menninger said that this percentage of online courses is optimal. Extension staff
members are not convinced that they should be the leader in promoting online courses on
campus.
National Scene for Continuing Education: What is the national scene for continuing education
for public, private, and for-profit universities? Dean Menninger said that Extension has not
done a formal study of who the major universities are in continuing education.
The following documents were distributed. 1.) 2003-04 Academic Senate Review of UCLA
Extension. 2.) UCLA Extension Formal Response to the Senate Review. 3.) The Restructuring
of the Committee on University Extension (CUE) to CCCE 4.) The Annual Reports of the CUE
and CCCE. Professor DeNardo asked members to read the documents with an aim to
consolidate our thoughts on community education and Extension in a briefing or policy memo.
3. Approval of minutes: The minutes of the January 27, 2006 meeting were distributed.
Please inform Tom Nykiel if you have emendations to the minutes.
Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at approximately 2:10 pm.
