INTRODUCTION
Faculty of Science of P. J. Šafárik University in Košice was founded in 1963 and since
that time it has educated more than 5 000 graduates of both, single and joint degree
programme studies in all branches of natural sciences. Within the European Union adopted
model 3-5-8, the Faculty provides the Bachelor's and Magister's degree studies in the
following branches: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Ecology, Geography, Informatics,
Mathematics and Physics as well as all joint degree programmes in combinations of Biology,
Chemistry, Geography, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics. Since 2006, in cooperation
with Institute of Filological and Social Sciences joint degree programmes in combinations
with Physochology, Philosophy, Slovak language and Briyish and American studies were
opened.
As a respected research institution, the Faculty offers also PhD study programmes in
fifteen accredited fields of science for graduates from Slovak and foreign universities. The
education at the Faculty of Science is provided by experienced teachers who carry out also
research and closely co-operate with Slovak and foreign universities and research facilities.
The research at the Faculty of Science at Šafárik University in Košice shows
multidisciplinary character and due to this it covers a wide range of topics from molecular
biology to computer and material sciences. The research in 2007 in the field of Biology and
Ecology was directed towards the problems of biodiversity of plants and animals,
biotechnology of medicinal plants, carcinogenesis, prevention and cancer therapy; in
Geography the research was aimed at hydrology of the Slovak karst. Research in Chemistry
focused on synthesis and properties of new compounds with biological activity, new materials
and new analytical methods. Research in Informatics was concentrated on fuzzy techniques,
neural networks, logical programming and preparation of web-university, in Mathematics it
followed the ideas of graph theory, algebraic structures, differential equations and topology
and in Physics it was concentrated on development of new magnetic materials, theoretical and
experimental research of low-dimensional magnetism and quantum liquids at ultra-low
temperatures, nuclear collision studies and photodynamic effect. The research was also
carried out in the fields of theory of teaching of biology, chemistry, informatics, mathematics
and physics. High percentage of the scientific outputs is done in the co-operation with foreign
universities or research facilities.

Graduates of the Faculty find positions not only as researchers and secondary school
teachers but they can successfully work in the business sphere and public administration.
Some of them successfully undertake doctoral study or postdoctoral training abroad to be well
accepted in the European labour market. New forms of further long-life education as a part of
service done to society are provided for graduates of the Faculty of Science as well as for the
public. The RNDr. (Rerum Naturalium Doctor) examinations, qualification examinations,
various courses and training projects are to be mentioned. In accordance with European
documents on higher education the Faculty uses the credit-based system in line with the
European standard ECTS. Joining the European SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme
promoted the possibility for our students to undertake a fully recognized period of study at
EU universities as an integral part of their degree and academic qualification as well as
allowed to the students from EU countries to undertake a semester or two of studies at our
faculty.

STRUCTURE OF FACULTY
The administrative structure of the Faculty of Science is based on larger institutes
incorporating individual departments. The head of each institute is Director (Professor or
Associated Professor) and the Council of the Institute formed of full-time Professors and
Heads of departments. This structure enables better organization of the pedagogical and
scientific life of the Faculty.
During 2007 reorganisation of the administrative structure of the Faculty took place.
From September 1, the Institute of Social Sciences splitted off of the structure of Faculty of
Science and also the Detached Unit in Rožňava became a part of the administrative structure
of the University. Nevertheless, the Detached Unit in Rožňava continued to provide Bachelor
study programme.
Within the Faculty are active also the Centre of Applied Computer Science (developing
the Academic Information System) and the Centre for Lifelong Learning organizing other

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Faculty of Science of P. J. Šafárik University in Košice is included in the group of
research faculties, which put strong accent on research as an integral part of their mission.
Multidisciplinary character of the Faculty is a good prerequisite for interdisciplinary approach
and integration of scientific activities. After entering into European structures the priorities of
the Faculty are integration into European research area, improving the quality of scientific
outputs and PhD study, increasing the stream of financial sources for scientific activities, rebuilding of research and information infrastructure of the Faculty and extension of services in
community, business, research, developmental, industrial and agricultural facilities in
Slovakia.
In 2007, the Faculty has continued to improve the quality of several excellent research
laboratories: Laboratory of NMR spectroscopy, Laboratory of spectral methods, Laboratory
of thermal analysis and Laboratory of structure analysis of biomacromolecules (Institute of
Chemistry), Laboratory of flow cytometry and Laboratory of cell cultures (Institute of
Biology), Laboratory of low temperature physics with new helium liquefier and MPMS
SQUID as well as PPMS apparatuses, Laboratory of biophotonics and Laboratory of
advanced computer technologies (Institute of Physics) as well as the Laboratory of GIS
(Institute of Geography).
In these and other laboratories worked more than 220 university teachers and
researchers together with about 90 doctoral students. This staff is involved in up to 140
scientific projects supported by both, grants for fundamental research from the Slovak grant
agencies: Slovak Grant Agency for Science (VEGA), Slovak Agency for Science and
Technology (APVV), Slovak Cultural and Educational Agency (KEGA), and foreign sources
of funding such as EU FP6 projects, COST Agency, DAAD (Germany) and other institutions.
Moreover, young researchers were supported by internal grant systems (VVGS) at the
university as well as faculty level. In 2007, the University and Faculty supported 25 and 25
VVGS projects, respectively.
Excellence in research measured by international standards is a first objective of our
research teams. Within the Faculty, a Centre of excellence for low-temperature physics was
established. In applied research, the main attention is paid to pharmaceutical,
17
pharmacological, chemical and material research. Continuous increase in funding sources for
research is caused by the growing activity and comes from research grants and contracts. It
exceeds the average grant income of the Slovak universities, year after year it becomes more
and more important part of the budget of the Faculty (in 2007 grants made up 85.25 % of the
overall budget-see the graph).

Selected Results
VEGA 1/4321/07 (Bojková):The effects of peroral antidiabetic agent metformin on basic
tumor growth parameters, metabolic and hormonal variables in chemically-induced mammary
carcinogenesis in female Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. The results are under evaluation.
VEGA 1/1273/04 (Bruňáková): The time-course of expression of dbat and dbtnbt genes
involved in later steps of paclitaxel biosynthesis and the intracellular taxane accumulation
were studied thorough a 64-day culture interval of Taxus baccata callus cultures. The
expression profile of these genes was slightly different and varied within the subculture. The
highest level of dbat expression was detected 24 hours after inoculation followed by a
decrease in both cultures. Although the increase in transcriptional activity of both genes
positively correlated with callus growth, the intracellular accumulation of paclitaxel varied
during subculture with the maximum in stationary or at the end of linear phase.
VEGA 1/2326/05 (Čellárová): Cryobiological study was aimed at optimisation of
cryopreservation procedure for Hypericum perforatum by means of a study of phase transition
of cryoprotective solutions and application of vitrification method, respectively. Temperature
changes within interval of phase transition were measured directly in cooled samples. We
have detected increase of temperature by 0.5 to 7.17°C during cooling process within this
interval. The data indicate that amount of released heat depends on the rate of cooling.
APVV 20-003704 (Čellárová): Expression of the hyp-1 gene with proposed function in the
biosynthesis of hypericin was studied for the first time. Based on our previous results on
expression of this gene in Hypericum perforatum L. with the highest detected level of
transcript in organs non-producing hypericin (Košuth et al. 2007) we have continued with an
aim to clear up the function of this gene by analyses of transcription level in different
representatives of the genus Hypericum, producing and not producing hypericin. It was found
that level of expression of this gene correlated with biosynthetic ability. The lowest
expression levels were detected in taxons where hypericin was under quantification limit.
AV 4/0029/07 (Dudáš): Methodologic aspects of short-time immobilization of sperm cells
were resolved for the purposes of intravital diagnosis.
VEGA 1/4320/07 (Dudáš): We have implemented maintenance of transgenic animal colonies
in our animal facility and tested histological detection of cleft defects in embryonic tissues.
APVV LPP-0155-06 (Fedoročko): The role of epithelial seam in palate formation. We have
identified important teratogenes inhibiting disintegration of the epithelial seam.
VEGA 1/2355/05 (Kassayová): Chemopreventive effects of selected nonsteroidal
antiinflammatory drugs – cyclooxy-genase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors were tested in the model of
chemically (N-methyl-N-nitrosourea)-induced mammary carcinogenesis in female Sprague-
30
Dawley rats. Nonselective inhibitor of COX-2 activity - diclofenac was administered in
drinking water in concentration of 0.01 mg/ 1 ml. Tumor suppresive effects by some basic
parameters of mammary carcinogenesis were recorded. The incidence decreased by 12 %,
tumor frequency per group decreased by 39 % and per animal decreased by 32 % when
compared to the control group. Administration of selective COX-2 activity inhibitor celecoxib significantly decreased tumor frequency per group (by 54 %), tumor incidence ( by
24 %) and frequency per animal (by 40 %).
VEGA 1/2362/05 (Mock): Within the project we have realized wide study of soil fauna in
the most important surface and cave localities of the orographic unit Čierna hora Mts. (E
Slovakia).Special attention we have laid on study of these taxonomic groups: Lumbricida,
Acarina, Palpigradida, Isopoda, Chilopoda and Diplopoda. Within the caves also Araneae,
Opiliones, Collembola and Coleoptera were studied. The most diversified communities of soil
fauna were detected mainly in forest and forest-steppe habitats on limestone. Among
important findings several West Carpathian endemics were identified, some first records from
Slovakia (e.g. mite Belba clavigera) or new for science (millipedes Mecogonopodium
carpathicum, Ochogona sp., springtail Neelus sp.).

Selected Results
6RP/DeSANNS-020133 (Zeleňák): New nanoporous sorbents, for selective and reversible
sorption of carbon dioxide, were prepared and tested. We have studied the influence of pore
size and surface basicity of the sorbents on sorption capacity. The lower limit for pore size of
nanoprous silica to be used in preparation of efficient amine-based sorbents is approximately
3,5 nm. Below this size the active sites inside the pores are inaccessible for CO2 molecules
due to a limited rate of their penetration to the pores. The molecular sieves with larger pores
(7nm) possess higher sorption capacity. The surface basicity is the other factor influencing the
sorption capacity.
APVV RPEU-0027-06 (Zeleňák): We investigated influence of amine concentration on
mesostructure development in amine modified molecular sieves using SAXS and HRTEM
measurements. Hexagonal mesostructure was preserved up to 10 wt.% of amine. The
transition to lamellar phase was observed at higher concentration of amine.
In the study of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), several novel 2D complexes with pyrazine
or azo-bis(pyridine) were prepared using hydrothermal methods and structurally characterized
by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The geometry of the ligands and crystal structure of the
complexes were influenced by temperature and pressure used in the hydrothermal synthesis.
APVV-20-038405 (Gonda): The microwave-assisted thermal aza-Claisen rearrangement of
allylic imidates and thiocyanates to the corresponding amides and isothiocyanates was
investigated. Significant accelerations of the rearrangement of allylic imidates to amides and
of allylic thiocyanates to isothiocyanates in comparison with standard thermal reactions was
observed. The acceleration of the rearrangement of allylic imidates to amides (8–30-fold) and
of allylic thiocyanates to isothiocyanates (24–80-fold) in comparison with thermal reactions
carried out at the reflux temperature of the solvent has been described.
APVV-0514-06 (Kutschy): A series of 2-aryl amino analogs of 1-methoxyspirobrassinol
methyl ether was synthesized by application of the spirocyclization strategy. Corresponding
diastereoisomers were separated by column chromatography and their structure determined by
NMR spectroscopy. The obtained substances were tested on their antiproliferative activity
against cancer cell lines Jurkat, MCF7, MDA, HeLa, CEM and A-549. Among the most
active substances are trans-isomer of 2-(3,4-dichloro)phenylamino analogue (IC50 = 20,7 –
22,6 μmol  l-1) and cis-isomer of 4-methylphenylamino analogue of 1-methoxyspirobrassinol
methyl ether, which is selectively effective against leukemic line Jurkat (IC50 = 6,6 μmol  l1
), whereas against the other studied cell lines it exhibits significantly lower activity (IC 50 =
64,7 - >100 μmol  l-1).
APVT-20006604 (Walko): New resveratrol derivatives containing the Schiff base moiety
and differing in the position of the hydroxy groups were synthesized. Interaction of this
potentially cytotoxic derivatives with the DNA was studied. It was observed that they have
a high afinity for the DNA as well as they act as an efficient infibitor of the DNA
topoisomerase I. Now, the cytotoxicity of those new derivatives is under investigation.
VEGA 1/3550/06 (Černák): Within our continuous study of magneto-structural correlations
we have prepared and structurally characterized new bimetallic compounds based on cyano
and N-donor ligands. Cu(NH3)2Ag2(CN)4 exhibits 2D crystal structure with antiferrodistortive
43
arrangement of octahedral around Cu(II) atoms; as a consequence the system exhibits
magnetically 1D character due to magnetic interactions mediated by hydrogen bonds.
Hydrogen bonds play also an important role in enhancing the magnetic dimensionality of
Cu(bmen)2Pd(CN)4 to 2D with regard to 1D character of the crystal structure. From the
systems
Cd(II)/Zn(II)–aepn–[Ni(CN)4]2were
isolated
ionic
compounds
[M(aepn)2][Fe(CN)6].H2O as well as compounds exhibiting formula M(aepn)Ni(CN)4 with
polymeric structure. As a by-product of the synthetic procedures a salt
[NH4][Et4N]2{[Fe(CN)6]}.3H2O was prepared and structurally characterized.
VEGA 1/2474/05 (Györyová ): New methods of synthesis of zinc(II) complexes with
bioactive ligands were developed with the aim to study their physicochemical properties and
biological activity. Prepared compounds were characterised by elemental analysis,
spectroscopic and thermal methods of analysis and structural determination. The mechanism
of thermal decomposition of prepared compounds was investigated. The correlation between
spectral, thermal and structural properties of complexes was explained. Microbiological
studies confirmed strong antimicrobial and antioxidative effect of prepared complexes. The
compound with the highest biological activity does not cause gene mutation. In vivo
biological experiments on animals indicated antibacterial properties of zinc.
VEGA 1/3557/06 (Martinková): The microwave-assisted thermal aza-Claisen rearrangement
of allylic imidates and thiocyanates to the corresponding amides and isothiocyanates was
investigated. Significant acceleration of the rearrangement of allylic imidates to amides and of
allylic thiocyanates to isothicyanates in comparison with standard thermal reactions was
observed. A novel synthetic approach to β-D-C-mannosyl-(R)- a (S)-alanines was
investigated. The key C-N bond formation was effected through the aza-Claisen
rearrangement of allylic thiocyanate induced by the microwaves and also realized at the
standard thermal conditions.
VEGA 1/3553/06 (Kutschy): Stereoselective synthesis of indole phytoalexin (R)-(+)-1methoxyspirobrassinin and its unnatural (S)-(-)-enantiomer was achieved by spirocyclization
of 1-methoxybrassinin in the presence of (+)- and (-)-menthol and subsequent oxidation of the
obtained menthyl ethers. Methanolysis of menthyl ethers in the presence of TFA afforded
(2R,3R)-(-)-1-methoxyspirobrassinol methyl ether as well its unnatural (2S,3S)-, (2R,3S)- and
(2S,3R)-isomers.
VEGA 1/2118/05 (Oriňáková): The galvanostatic deposition of binary Ni–Co coating onto
iron micro-particles was achieved in fluidised bed arrangement. The effect of anode material
on the composition of coating layer as well on the distribution of coating components on the
surface and across the coated particle was investigated. Regarding the thin coating layer the
anomalous behaviour was not observed. The overall content of Ni in binary deposit was
always higher than that of Co. However, the Co fraction was greater when the stainless steel
anode was used [1]. In the course of electrolytic deposition of Ni-Co coating on graphite
electrode it was found that increasing pH value increased the rate of deposition and the
content of cobalt in the binary deposit.
DAAD 16/2005 (Oriňáková): Iron powder microparticles were coated with a poly(methyl
methacrylate) (PMMA) film by electropolymerization in a fluidised bed reactor. Polymeric
PMMA coatings prepared at different experimental conditions were characterised with
pyrolysis gas chromatography (Py-GC) fingerprinting as well as time-of-flight secondary ion
mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Results confirmed that PMMA coating on the iron powder
44
microparticle surface formed an incoherent and inhomogeneous film. The optimal conditions
for preparation of PMMA coating onto Fe particles by electrochemical polymerisation in
fluidised bed were specified.
VEGA 1/2470/05 (Potočňák): We have studied an antibacterial and antifungal activity of 9
prepared [Cu(L)2N(CN)2]Y compounds against medicinally imported bacteria (Enterococcus
faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli) and fungi
(Candida spp.). Their antiproliferative activity against L1210 leukemia has been tested, too.
Most of the tested compounds expressed increased activity against bacteria and yeasts.
Interestingly, the most effective compounds possess also a significant activity against
lymphoblastoic leukemic cell line L1210. The most effective compounds are
[Cu(phen)2N(CN)2]Y (Y = PF6, BF4 a CF3SO3) and [Cu(mbpy)2N(CN)2]PF6, which inhibit
the growth of leukemic cells by 92-96 percent at 10 M concentrations.
VEGA 1/1274/04 (Podhradský): DNA supercoiling, temperature, the presence of divalent
ions and intercalators have cooperative influence on the formation and stability of irregular
structural motifs in DNA, e.g. DNA cruciform. The result is possible to extrapolate also for
chromosomal DNAs. The coincidence between the cytotoxic concentrations of intercalating
agents and the concentrations that modulate cruciform extrusion in vitro is interesting but
correlative. Overall, we provide new and interesting insights into the potential role of
cruciform structures in biology and, by extrapolation, in cancer therapy.
VEGA 1/1272/04 (Tomášková): We have shown that destabilization effect of polyanions on
basic proteins correlates both with isoelectric points of proteins and hydrophobicity of
polyanions. This effect, reminding chaperone action, is probably the reason of polyanions
increased efficiency of protein refolding. Based on comparison of effect of anions and
polyanions it follows that an anion cooperativity in polyanions is the reason of their
significant effect on protein stability. Cytochrom c as a typical globular basic protein in a
complex with polyanions in slightly acidic environment (pH~5-6) achieves molten globulelike state (MG) that differs by its properties from a „typical“ MG state.
VEGA 1/4459/07 (Walko): New derivatives of the diarylethene photochromic switches were
succesfully synthesized. The method used is enviromentally friendly and is based on the
solventless reaction. This method also allows to incorporate additional moiety into
a diarylethene backbone, a property usefull in construction of molecular devices. However,
the method requires further optimization since the yields are not optimal.
KEGA 3/3004/05 (Ganajová): The important results of this project were:

Selected Results
VEGA 1/3063/06 (Spišiak): We have continued researching the model microregional
structures in the rural areas. The studies were carried out in marginal areas where new
approaches like changes in land use and perception of inhabitants on development
programmes were applied. Some analyses were presented on foreign conferences in the Czech
Republic and Hungary.
VEGA 1/2024/05 (Kulla): In this project almost all partial components of
humangeographical research were processed. With respect to inhabitants, the intiguing
research on Roma population as well as non-traditional research of population intentions of
the young has been done. A phenomenon typical of city development in post-socialistic
period-suburbanisation - has been elaborated and main urbanisation zones in the city
surroundings were identified. Mapping the productive and non-productive activities in the
region was another area of interesting research. Issues such as identification of industrial
parks, recreation resorts, agrosubjects both in the city as well as in the city surroundings,
changes of functional use of city centre are among the most valuable.
VEGA 1/3062/06 (Hochmuth): The principal outcome of the application part was an
ongoing implementation of historical and current knowledge and concepts into the proposal of
geographical information database of karst territories in Slovakia. The second phase of the
proposal comprises the preparation of synthetical work to be published. We have worked on
analogue as well as digital founding maps and systematisation of knowledge in the context of
proposal of database, structuring the geographical base and verification of its usage for
regionalisation of smaller sample karst territories in Slovakia.
APVV SK - UA 00206– Slovensko -Ukrajina (Hochmuth): In the course of the second year
of the project we aimed at practical application of methods used in Slovakia and exploring the
socioeconomic phenomena on Ukraine border. Considering the evaluation of travel and
tourism forms, new Ukrainian methodology that has not been used in Slovakia yet, was
applied.

Selected Results
Grant VEGA 1/3128/06 (Geffert): We have obtained new relationship between the sizes of
two-way finite automata accepting a language and its complement. In the deterministic case,
for a given automaton (2dfa) with n states, we build an automaton accepting the complement
with at most 4n states. For the nondeterministic case, using a variant of inductive counting,
we show that the complement of a unary language, accepted by an n-state two-way automaton
(2nfa), can be accepted by an O(n^8)-state 2nfa. This allows the simulation of unary 2nfa’s by
probabilistic Las Vegas two-way automata, still using only O(n^8) states.
VEGA 1/3129/06 (Vojtáš): We proposed a model of a middleware system enabling
personalized web search for users with different preferences. We integrate both inductive and
deductive tasks to find user preferences and consequently best objects. The model is based on
modeling preferences by fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. We present the model-theoretic semantic
for fuzzy description logic f-EL which is the motivation of creating a model for fuzzy RDF.
Our model was experimentally implemented and integration was tested.
VEGA 1/4003/07 (Török): We derived a new representation of polynomials based on
reference points. We also generalized the r-point transformation for functions of two variables
with 2x2 reference points and derived the form of IZA surfaces for local approximation of 3D
data. Based on IZA polynomials we suggested new local models with r reference points, r=24, and proved that the recursive estimation of the local model is consistent. Due to an
appropriate localization of the reference points we succeeded to grant the smoothness of the
neighboring approximants without solving the classical system of spline equations.

Selected Results
APVT-20-004104 (Jendroľ): In 1955 Kotzig proved that every 3-connected planar graph
contains an edge with degree sum of its endvertices at most 13. This theorem is strengthened
for planar graphs of minimum degree 3 in J.Harant, S. Jendroľ [Graphs Combin. 23 (2007),
529-543] where the existence of a star K1,r in every planar graph G of minimum degree 3 is
proved such that the central vertex of K1,r has in G degree r, 3 ≤ r ≤ 5, and r - 2 leaves of K1,r
have in G degrees from a certain small list. By this paper are, except for the Kotzig statement,
strengthened also several recently published theorems.
VEGA 1/3002/06 (Bukovský): The equivalence of two recently studied properties of the
topological space of continuous real functions with topology of pointwise convergence has
been shown (QN=(α1), one implication was already known). That enabled to apply some
consistency results to unsolved problems connected with so called Scheepers hypothesis
(wQN=S1(Γ,Γ)), e.g. to show that this hypothesis is undecidable in the set theory.
VEGA 1/3003/06 (Studenovská): In J. Herchl, D. Jakubíková-Studenovská [Soft Computing
11 (2007), 1107-1112] it has been proved that, in general, a unary algebra with more than one
67
operation is not globally determined. In D. Jakubíková-Studenovská, J. Pócs [Czechoslovak
Math. J. 57(132) (2007), 975-986] it has been proved that Retract Theorem is valid for all
monounary algebras. There have been found conditions of existence and a constructive
description of a retract extension of one partial monounary algebra by another one [D.
Jakubíková-Studenovská, Selected questions of algebra, Collection of papers dedicated to the
memory of N.Ya. Medvedev, (2007), 242-253]. Properties of a Cantor extension of an
Archimedean lattice ordered group have been investigated.
VEGA 1/3004/06 (Jendroľ): An n-vertex tree T is arbitrarily vertex decomposable if for any
sequence τ of positive integers adding up to n there is a sequence of vertex disjoint subtrees of
T with orders given by τ.In the paper M.Horňák, Zs. Tuza, M. Woźniak [Discrete Appl. Math.
155 (2007), 1420-1429] there have been completely characterised on-line arbitrarily vertex
decomposable trees. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of G(5,n)-fulleroids
having 5-gonal and n-gonal faces only and the group of automorphism isomorphic to a given
group have been determined for all possible groups.
VEGA 1/3005/06 (Ohriska): In the study of noncanonical nonlinear differential equations of
the third order with quasiderivatives there have been obtained comparison theorems on
property A between linear and nonlinear equations. Using these results integral criteria for
property A for nonlinear equations have been found. In the study of neutral differential
equations there have been obtained sufficient conditions for bounded solutions to be
oscillatory which generalise some known results for differential equations without neutral
term.
KEGA 3/3007/05 (Šveda): Methodology and recommendation for creation and realisation of
e-learning courses have been worked out. General schemes for realisation of cognitive process
in e-learning courses have been created with the emphasis on active work with information
and utilisation of feedback during teaching process. Some topics from the educational content
have been didactically developed.

Selected Results
VEGA 1/3027/06 (Orendáčová): Experimental study of spin relaxation in dipolar spin ice
Dy2Ti2O7 has been performed. The obtained results suggest dominant influence of releasing
residual entropy by external magnetic field at temperatures lower than 1 K. The lowest
temperature obtainable by adiabatic demagnetization of spin ice seems to be nominally 0.3
K due to dynamic crossover in magnetic field induced temperature response. The analysis of
temperature dependence of relaxation time indicates Orbach relaxation process. The obtained
results did not confirm the existence of quantum tunneling in ‚frozen‘ diploar spin ice.
APVV 005204 (Feher): The specific heat in the temperature region of 100 mK–300 K and in
magnetic fields up to 9 T, as well as the susceptibility from 2 to 300 K have been measured in
the polycrystalline layered NaxCoO2 (x = 0.65, 0.70, and 0.75) oxides. Analysis of the
obtained data gives evidence of anomalous metallic behavior of non-Fermi liquid character.
Closer inspection indicates low-lying quantum states resembling Griffiths phases. The
underlaying microscopic mechanism is likely related to the mesoscopic phase separation, i.e.
the coexistence of partially ordered magnetic regions with Fermi liquid electrons.
APVV-20-007804 (Varga): The domain wall dynamics in thin magnetic wires has been
studied in order to find the crucial parameters that govern the maximum velocity of the
domain wall. It was found that it is the low anisotropy together with the presence of two
perpendicular anisotropies, which is responsible for fast domain wall. The hypotesis was
confirmed by the measurement on different magnetic wires. Very fast domain walls have been
observed reaching the velocity that exceeded the sound velocity, in the case of microwires
with very low anisotropy even 4 times.
VEGA 1/3035/06 (Varga): The domain structure and magnetization processes of amorphous
and nanocrystalline FeNiMoB based microwires have been studied. These microwires show
magnetic softening after devitrification (in contrary to the FINEMET- based microwires). The
anomalous increase of the switching field at low frequencies was explained by the structural
relaxation induced by magnetic field.
VEGA 1/4020/07 (Kollár): In order to investigate ac magnetic properties of FeNi bulk
material, in the form of a cylinder, prepared by hot compaction of the powder the hole with
diameter is 5 mm were drilled using spark plasma erosion. The losses were obtained from the
ac hysteresis loops traced by an ac hysteresisgraph in the frequency range 100 Hz - 3 kHz at
maximum magnetic induction of 0.2 T Annealing at 1000 ◦C reduces the loss, due to the
relaxation of internal stresses induced by milling and compaction.
APVV-20-008404 (Kollár): Bulk metallic Co-based samples with different contents of Febased Vitroperm-type alloys were successfully synthesized by consolidating the proportioned
mixtures of amorphous Co-based and amorphous or nanocrystalline Fe-based powders. For
82
the studied alloys, it was found that the addition of nanocrystalline or amorphous
FeCuNbMoSiB powder to amorphous CoFeZrB powder caused a decrease of the
magnetostriction of the resultant bulk samples, while the coercivity shows an opposite
behavior. The high coercivity may be mainly due to the defects and internal stresses created
by milling and consolidation.
Hasylab projekt II-20060031 EC
The nanocrystallization of amorphous Co-Fe-Zr-B alloys obtained by melt spinning was
followed in detail using in-situ synchrotron radiation diffraction experiments. Both thermal
and mechanically induced crystallization processes were investigated. We could evidence the
one-step crystallization into a nanoscale mixture of bcc-Co(Fe) and ZrCo3B2 phases at onset
crystallization temperatures close to 620oC and the decrease of the exothermal signal with
longer milling times. The use of X-ray diffraction line profile analysis allowed us to minitor
not only the temperature/time evolution of the average crystallite sizes and microstrains, but
also the global microstructural changes of the alloy specimens.
VEGA 1/40009/07 (Sovák): The influence of vanadium content on the magnetic and
structural properties of nanocrystalline Finemet-based alloys was investigated. It was
confirmed that vanadium influences the creation of nanocrystalline phase and magnetic
properties. On the basis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy was performed the analysis of the
both nanocrystalline and amorphous state.
VEGA 1/4010/07 (Martinská): The data on the tensor Ayy, Axx, Axz and vector Ay analyzing
powers in the dd  3 Hen reaction at Td= 270 MeV in the angular range 0 - 110 in the
c.m. were obtained. The observed negative sign of the tensor analyzing powers A yy, Axx and
Axz at smalll angles clearly demonstrate the sensitivity to the ratio of the D- and S- wave
component of the 3He wave functions. However, the one-nucleon exchange calculations by
using the standard 3He wave functions have failed to reproduce the strong variation of the
tensor analyzing powers as a function of the angle in c.m.
VEGA 1/2007/05 (Vokál): Fragmentation of light relativistic stable and radioactive nuclei at
energies around few GeV per nucleon have been measured in the frame of Becquerel
experiment in collaboration with JINR Dubna. The new results on dissociation of 7Be, 8B,
9Be, 11B, 14N and other light nuclei have been obtained. The new experimental results on
emission of different types of secondary charged particles in inelastic interactions of Kr and
Au nuclei with nuclei in photoemulsion detector at primary nucleus energies 0.95 and 10.6
GeV per nucleon have been obtained. The analysis of dependence of these characteristics on
collision centrality and also the comparison with the results from the calculations in the frame
of Dubna cascade-evaporation model of nucleus-nucleus interaction has been made.
APVV-20-011704 (Vokál): Scaling properties of the strange baryons and mesons
production along with the behaviour of elliptic flow of the strange and non-strange particles
produced in ultrarelativistic Au+Au collisions imply a formation of extremely dense and hot
nuclear matter with partonic collectivity which furthermore reached thermal equilibrium,
including strange quarks. Its behaviour during subsequent expansion and hadronization is
consistent with the scenario of quark recombination or coalescence.
VEGA SAV 2/6192/26 (Urbán): Transverse mass spectra and Hanbury-Brown and Twiss
correlation functions of negatively charged hadrons, which are predominantly pions, were
studied at 40 A GeV/c beam momentum. Based on these data the collision dynamics and the
83
spacetime extent of the system at the thermal freeze-out were examined over a centrality
region corresponding to the most central events giving 53% of the Pb-Pb inelastic cross
section. Comparison with freeze-out conditions of strange particles and HBT results from
other experiments were discussed.
VEGA 1/2009/05 (Bobák):We have proposed a spin valve suitable for a new class of
spintronic device which can operate as a current-driven nano-oscilator of microwaves in zero
magnetic field.
LPP-0107-06 (Jaščur): It has been found exactly that the decorated square lattice with two
different kinds of decorating spins on horizontal and vertical bonds displays a very peculiar
critical behavior similar to the effectively quasi-one-dimensional spin system.
VEGA 2/7011/7 (Gális): The most prominent outburst activity over the past 12 years was
detected and studies for symbiotic system AG Dra. Object was very active during whole this
period whereby its activity was modulated by the pulsations of the cool giant in this system.
The flickering activity during the recent outburst of recurrent nova RS Oph was studied and
the basic physical parameters of this nova were obtained using own long-term photometric
material. New variable star GSC00008-00901 was discovered on the archive CCD images.
The observations led to conclusion, that star is an eclipsing binary and its basic parameters
were determined. Analysis of photometric and spectroscopic observations of an eclipsing
binary DV Psc and V456 Cyg was performed, masses and luminosities of the components
were determined and migration of spots on a surface of the components was studied.
KEGA 3/4320/06 (Hanč): We have finished a pilot research of students’ knowledge using
FCI test in classical-teaching-methods environment at university and high school level. We
have created pedagogical materials for teachers which will apply Peer instruction and
Interactive lecture demonstrations. After a study stay we gained a strong feedback and own
experience with using PI and ILD directly from originators of the method.
KEGA 3/4321/06 (Kireš): We created and evaluated the e-learning courses for Physics
Olympiad categories C,D support. We focused the innovation of the collection of the solved
physical problems on student’s conceptual understanding of the selected phenomenon.
APVV, LPP-0192-06 (Kireš): We created and realized the set of popularization activities for
basic and secondary school students. E-learning support through web server was established
as a platform for systematic teachers and students information about our own activities for
them.

APVV-20-036104 (Miškovský): A special role of the LDL receptors for Hyp delivery to U87 MG cells in the presence of LDL particles was revealed by the substantial increase of Hyp
uptake in the situation, when the number of LDL receptors on the cell surface was elevated.
Moreover, the colocalization experiments showed the lysosomal localization of Hyp
following the uptake and that the concentration of Hyp in these organelles was enhanced in
the cells with elevated number of LDL receptors when the incubation medium contained
LDL. These facts can significantly contribute to the improvement of the selectivity of
accumulation of photosensitizers to cancer cells and consequently lead to the higher
effectivity of photodynamic therapy of cancer. Time resolved phosphorescence of Hyp
embedded in LDL as well as time course of singlet oxygen creation and annihilation after
illumination of Hyp/LDL complex with visible light was thoroughly studied.
VEGA 1/4019/07 (Uličný): We introduced simple and extensible quantitative model of
caspase activation process as a point of convergence of both intracellular and extracellular
stimulation. In this model, caspases 8 and 9 represent all initiator, and caspase 3 represents all
effector caspases. The model also includes interactions of apoptosome complex as the key
player in intracelular apoptotic pathway. Activity of effector caspases is controlled by
effective representant of IAP protein family. The effective BAR inhibitor, was found as
crucial regulator of sensitivity of modeled system. The model is based on experimental data
from HeLa cells and correctly predicts most characteristic dynamical features of caspase
cascade.
VEGA 1/4021/07 (Brutovský): We have developed the methodology for the simulation of
circular growth with a priori defined properties of the border (quantified by the fractal
dimension) and the growth rate. The methodology has been applied to test the hypothesis
about the growth of multicellular tumor spheroids and the possible dependence of the therapy
efficiency on the fractal dimension of the tumor spheroids border.
