Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each
time, something good, no matter how small, stops him. Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana
town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister's recent death.
When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it's unclear who saves whom. And
when they pair up on a project to discover the 'natural wonders' of their state, both Finch and Violet make
more important discoveries: It's only with Violet that Finch can be himself - a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy
who's not such a freak after all. And it's only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and
start living them. But as Violet's world grows, Finch's begins to shrink.

Theodore Tate returns in the latest thriller from bestselling international crime writer Paul Cleave.
Back in the police force and with his wife Bridget out of hospital, Tate looks to be getting his life on track.
Meanwhile, his former detective partner Carl Schroder is finding life a little more challenging. The bullet he
took in the head six months ago hasn't killed him . . . but it's left him with time on his hands. When the body of a convicted rapist is found, obliterated by an oncoming train, and other criminals begin
to disappear, it seems somebody might be helping their victims exact revenge. There's a common plea
from victims' loved ones: when you find the man who did this, give me five minutes with him. And that's
what someone is doing.
But then innocent people start to die, and Tate and Schroder find themselves caught up in a dangerous
cat and mouse chase that only one of them can win.

A gripping new thriller from crime writing sensation Paul Cleave
Theodore Tate never forgot his first crime scene – ten-year-old Jessica found dead in the 'Laughterhouse',
an old abandoned slaughterhouse with the 'S' spray-painted over. The killer was found and arrested.
Justice was served. Or was it?
Fifteen years later, there's a new killer on the loose and he has a list of people who were involved in
Jessica's murder case, among them Doctor Stanton, a man with three young daughters. If Tate is going to help them, he has to find the connection between the killer, the 'Laughterhouse' and a

been kidnapped, and Stanton is being forced to make an impossible decision: which one of his daughters

'On the shrouded corpse hung a tablet of green topaz with the inscription: 'I am Shaddad the Great. I conquered a thousand cities; a thousand white elephants were collected for me; I lived for a thousand
years and my kingdom covered both east and west, but when death came to me nothing of all that I had
gathered was of any avail. You who see me take heed: for Time is not to be trusted.'
Dating from at least a millennium ago, this is the earliest known collection of Arabic stories, surviving in a
single, ragged manuscript in a library in Istanbul. Some found their way into The Arabian Nights but most
have never been read in English before. Tales of the Marvellous and News of the Strange has monsters,
lost princes, jewels beyond price, a princess turned into a gazelle, sword-wielding statues and shocking
reversals of fortune.
To read these stories today is an extraordinary experience - they were designed to enchant and delight a
society almost fantastically distant from our own and now, centuries later, they can be marvelled at in all
their strangeness.

The dramatic new novel in the Philadelphia police saga by #1 New York Times–bestselling author W. E. B.
Griffin.
In Philadelphia—suffering among the country's highest murder rates—the tension between the Philadelphia
Police Department and its Citizens Oversight Committee has long been reaching a boiling point. That
turmoil turns from bad to worse shortly after the committee begins targeting police shootings—especially
those of twenty-seven-year-old Homicide Sergeant Matt Payne, the 'Wyatt Earp of the Main Line'—and
then the committee's combative leader is found shot dead point-blank on the front porch of his run-down
Philly row house.
As chanting protesters fill the streets, the city threatens to erupt. Payne, among many others accused of
being complicit in the leader's death, becomes quietly furious. He suspects there's something deeper
behind it all, but what? Ordered to stay out of the line of fire, he struggles ahead to do what he does best
—his job. He's been investigating the murder of a young family. A reporter, working on an illicit drug series
for Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Mickey O'Hara, has been killed with his wife and child, a note stapled
to his chest warning that the drug stories are to stop. Period. While Payne knows that he, like his pal
O'Hara, cannot back down, he also knows that they damn sure could be among the next to die. . . .
Praise for W. E. B. Griffin

From the #1 New York Times–and Wall Street Journal bestselling author comes Clandestine Operations: a
brand-new series about the Cold War, the fledling Central Intelligence Agency—and a different breed of
warrior.
In the first weeks after World War II, a squeaky-clean new second lieutenant named James D. Cronley Jr.
is spotted and recruited for a new enterprise that will eventually be transformed into something called the
CIA. One war may have ended, but another one has already begun, against an enemy that is bigger,
smarter, and more vicious: the Soviet Union.
The Soviets have hit the ground running, and Cronley's job is to help frustrate them, harass them, and spy

on them any way he can. His recruiter thinks he has the potential to become an asset—though, of course,
he could also screw up spectacularly.
And in his first assignment, it looks like that's exactly what might happen. He's got seven days to extract a
vital piece of information from a Soviet agent, but Cronley's managed to rile up his superior officers (he
seems to have a talent for it), and if he fails, it could be one of the shortest intelligence careers in history.
There are enemies everywhere—and, as Cronley is about to find out, some of them even wear the same
uniform he does.
Filled with the authenticity, color, and propulsive storytelling for which Griffin is acclaimed, Top Secret
marks the beginning of galvanizing new series - and new hero.

Francis Plug is a troubled and often drunk misfit who causes chaos and confusion wherever he goes—and
where he most likes to go is to real author events, collecting signatures from the likes of Salman Rushdie,
Kazuo Ishiguro, and Eleanor Catton. As he adds to this collection of signed Booker first editions, Francis—
a wannabe author himself—is also helpfully writing a self-help manual. Devised with the novice writer in

If you're provided with a hands-free mic, clipped to your lapel, don't forget to turn it off when you visit the

William Wagner Bird had filled his boarding house with people whom society would never miss - if it had
ever noticed them at all.
There was Nurse Clock - ugly, without the consideration to have a nice personality. Studdy - a petty thief
who could never find anything petty enough. And Miss Clerricot, who wanted someone to make indecent
suggestions, so that she could refuse.
With misshapen bricks like these William Wagner Bird built his peculiar boarding house. But then he died
and everything started to come apart . . .

The members of the school Old Boys Association are due to elect this year's president. And the election is
an opportunity for the Old Boys, at seventy, to relive the struggles and torments of those long ago but

But there is one important difference. Now they are old they possess a fiercer understanding of the things in life which matter - power, revenge,
hatred, love and love's failures. Now is the time for old scores to be settled - once and for all time.
Described by Evelyn Waugh as 'uncommonly well-written, gruesome, funny and original', William Trevor's

Inspired by a true story, My Mother's Secret is a captivating and ultimately uplifting tale intertwining the lives
of two Jewish families in hiding from the Nazis, a fleeing German soldier, and the mother and daughter
who team up to save them all.
Franciszka and her daughter, Helena, are simple, ordinary people . . . until 1939, when the Nazis invade
their homeland. Providing shelter to Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland is a death sentence, but Franciszka
and Helena do exactly that. In their tiny home in Sokal, they hide a Jewish family in a loft above their
pigsty, a Jewish doctor with his wife and son in a makeshift cellar under the kitchen, and a defecting
German soldier in the attic—each party completely unknown to the others. For everyone to survive,
Franciszka will have to outsmart her neighbors and the German commander.
Told simply and succinctly from four different perspectives—all under one roof— My Mother's Secret is a
testament to the kindness, courage, and generosity of ordinary people who chose to be extraordinary.

'They fought, hand to hand, for every inch of ground, using pistols, swords, fists, at a distance, at close
quarters, from above, from below, from everywhere' Les Misérables, or 'the wretched', is Victor Hugo's epic novel of redemption, sacrifice, love and suffering,
set against the turbulent backdrop of early nineteenth-century France. It tells the story of ex-convict Jean
Valjean, who has spent nineteen brutal years in chains after stealing a loaf of bread. Saved by an act of
Christian charity, he is then offered a chance of happiness when he encounters the downtrodden Fantine
and vows to rescue her daughter Cosette - but is constantly pursued by the implacable policeman Javert,
who will not let him escape his past. An instant bestseller on publication in 1862, Les Misérables is a novel
of intense emotional power, weaving together individual stories with real-life historical events to create a
rich, imaginative drama of human life.
Christine Donougher's lucid and powerful new translation is accompanied by an introduction by Robert
Tombs discussing Hugo's life as a novelist and progressive political crusader, and the autobiographical
elements in the novel. This edition also contains a chronology, further reading and notes.

So begins the Time Traveller's astonishing firsthand account of his journey eight hundred thousand years
beyond his own era—and the story that launched H. G. Wells's successful career and earned him the
reputation as the father of science fiction. With a speculative leap that still fires the imagination, Wells
sends his brave explorer to face a future burdened with our greatest hopes...and our darkest fears. A pull
of the Time Machine's lever propels him to the age of a slowly dying Earth. There he discovers two bizarre
races—the ethereal Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks—who not only symbolize the duality of human
nature, but offer a terrifying portrait of tomorrow as well. Published in 1895, this masterpiece of invention captivated readers on the threshold of a new century.

In these three darkly-imagined novellas of family life, both cruelty and love dominate relationships between
husband and wife, mother and child. Here a devoted mother commits a terrible crime against her own son
in order to save him; an ageing poet exploited by her own children struggles for survival; a young nurse

Maigret savoured the sensations of his youth again: the cold, stinging eyes, frozen fingertips, an aftertaste
of coffee. Then, stepping inside the church, a blast of heat, soft light; the smell of candles and incense. The last time Maigret went home to the village of his birth was for his father's funeral. Now an anonymous
note predicting a crime during All Souls' Day mass draws him back there, where troubling memories
resurface and hidden vices are revealed.

The Iliad is the first and the greatest literary achievement of Greek civilization - an epic poem without rival
in the literature of the world, and the cornerstone of Western culture. The story centres on the critical
events in the last year of the Trojan War, which lead to Achilleus' killing of Hektor and determine the fate of
Troy. But Homer's theme is not simply war or heroism. With compassion and humanity, he presents a
universal and tragic view of the world, of human life lived under the shadow of suffering and death, set
against a vast and largely unpitying divine background.

'He who destroys a good book, kills reason itself'
John Milton is renowned for his poetry, yet during most of his lifetime he was best known as a writer of
prose, both celebrated and denounced for his fiery polemics in an era of religious and political controversy,
radical pamphleteering and civil war. This annotated edition of his major English prose writings includes
Milton's tractates in favour of divorce, on progressive education, in defence of the execution of Charles I
and the new Republican state, and Areopagitica, his famous attack on censorship and call for a free press.
Rhetorical, powerful, heterodox, these are monuments to the ideals of liberty and free speech from a
master of English prose.

While violent revolution and social upheaval rocked Europe, far away in New South Wales, Governor
Lachlan Macquarie was sowing the seeds for the Australian idea of the 'fair go' Macquarie was a reformer
and an emancipator. He believed that a person's worth – be they gentry, infantry or convict – lay in what
they were capable of doing, not what they had done in the past. He freed the brilliant, mercurial convict
Francis Greenway and appointed him government architect for the buildings that would shape a new
nation. But to the Tory British government of 1820, Macquarie and Greenway's unconventional alliance
threatened NSW's very legitimacy as a penal colony.
Here Luke Slattery breathes dramatic life into Australia's first political dismissal and, along the way, maps
Macquarie and Greenway's bold collaborations and extraordinary architectural – and cultural – legacy.

Three formative short stories by one of the most significant American writers of the twentieth century.
A cocktail party conversation is most revealing in what is left unsaid. Tensions between a brother and
sister escalate to violent threats. A soldier heading off to war is torn between duty to his country and to his
family.
These stories, first published in magazines in the 1940s and long out of print, showcase the formidable
talent that would blossom in The Catcher in the Rye. The first book by J. D. Salinger to be published in fifty years, Three Early Stories is a crucial addition to the
shelves of Salinger fans and newcomers to his work alike.

Charles D'Ambrosio's essay collection Orphans spawned something of a cult following. In the decade
since the tiny limited-edition volume sold out its print run, its devotees have pressed it upon their friends,
students, and colleagues, only to find themselves begging for their copy's safe return. For anyone familiar
with D'Ambrosio's writing, this enthusiasm should come as no surprise. His work is exacting and
emotionally generous, often as funny as it is devastating.
Loitering gathers those eleven original essays with new and previously uncollected work so that a broader
audience might discover one of the world's great living essayists. No matter his subject—Native American
whaling, a Pentecostal 'hell house', Mary Kay Letourneau, the work of J. D. Salinger, or, most often, his
own family—D'Ambrosio approaches each piece with a singular voice and point of view; each essay, while
unique and surprising, is unmistakably his own.

On the hellish battlefields of World War II Europe, Major Dick Winters led his Easy Company—the nowlegendary Band of Brothers—from the confusion and chaos of the D-Day invasion to the final capture of
Hitler's Eagle's Nest.
But Winters's story didn't end there. It was only the beginning.
He was a quiet, reluctant hero whose modesty and strength drew the admiration of not only his men, but
millions worldwide. Now comes the story of Dick Winters in his last years as witnessed and experienced by
his good friend, Cole C. Kingseed.
Kingseed shares the formative experiences that made Winters such an effective leader. He addresses
Winters's experiences and leadership during the war, his intense, unbreakable devotion to his men, his
search for peace both without and within after the war, and how fame forced him to make adjustments to
an international audience of well-wishers and admirers, even as he attempted to leave a lasting legacy
before joining his fallen comrades. Following Winters's death on January 2, 2011, the outpouring of grief
and adulation for one of this nation's preeminent leaders of character, courage, and competence shows
just how much of an impact Dick Winters left on the world.

I always knew that the rest of my story is gonna be a good one. I don't know how I knew that, but I always
did. Ungow! I am Fester the cat. Welcome to my book, everyone!
From when he first ambled into Paul Magrs's yard—skinny, covered in flea bites, and missing all but one
and a half teeth—Fester knew he'd found his family. Paul and his partner, Jeremy, thought it was the
ragged black-and-white stray, tired from a rough life on the streets, who was in desperate need of support.
But clever Fester knew better. He understood that it was his newfound owners who needed the help.
Over the course of seven years, the feisty feline turned the quaint Manchester house into a loving home.
Through his fierce spirit, strong will, and calming energy, Fester taught Paul and Jeremy how to listen and
breathe, how to appreciate the joys of simply sitting and singing (what Fester's purrs sounded like to his
silly humans), and how to find joy and contentment in life, even when dealing with hardship.
This is the true story of an extraordinary little cat whose gentle charm and trusting soul turned two young
men into a family.

and nostalgic.' Jo Baker, national bestselling author of Longbourn

In The Ministry of Guidance Invites You to Not Stay, Hooman Majd introduces us to the delights and
challenges of life in the so-called axis of evil. His funny, wry account of daily life in Iran is a mixture of
extreme driving, intense sociability, yellow-tinged sheep's yoghurt and truly good Cuban cigars,
interspersed with challenges from the religious police, stealthy internet use and polite yet concerning
interrogations inside government ministries. At parties he both hears stories from friends of life in Evin
prison after the Green Revolution and witnesses heady Western-style nihilism. From the smoggy streets of
Tehran to the beautiful cities and mountains around it, this is a warm and revealing account of life in
reverse-exile.
'Entertaining and insightful, by turns tender and wry . . . gives readers a guided tour of an Iran that they will
not find in the news.' Eamonn Gearon, Literary Review

'When the Iranian-born but Western-raised writer Hooman Majd decided to take his wife and baby son to
live in Iran for a year, he knew the powers-that-be would not festoon his path with roses. This book is the
fruit of that year, written in Majd's wry, laconic style. He takes us through daily life: negotiating traffic jams

tech-savvy and young population; the morality squads . . . an insightful, appealing read.' Leyla Sanai,

fascinating megapolis that is modern Tehran . . . builds a sympathetic and nuanced picture of a complex

Neither Brooke Shields nor the life she's led has ever been considered ordinary. Her parents divorced
when she was five months old and she was primarily raised by her Newark-tough, larger-than-life mother. Brooke began modelling at the ripe old age of eleven months. This launched a career that made Brooke
the most famous and recognizable child, and then teen, of her generation. All this success came with her mother at the helm. Teri acted as mother and manager and would allow no
other outside personal or professional assistance. In their public life, Teri fiercely protected Brooke from
the pitfalls and temptations that derail so many child stars. But in private, Teri was troubled, sometimes
verbally and emotionally abusive, volatile, and drinking so excessively that at thirteen years old Brooke
spearheaded and staged an intervention. The bond between Brooke and her mother was impenetrable, shaped by both laughter and tears. Yet their
inseparable relationship became strained as Brooke sought her independence as daughter and actress. When Brooke grew into adulthood, the pair made choices and sacrifices that would affect their relationship
forever. Later, when her own daughters were born, Brooke found that her experience as a mother was
shaped in every way by the woman who raised her. Yet despite all the fears and challenges in the past,
when Teri died in 2012, Brooke was by her side, living and conflicted to the end. Only Brooke knows the truth of the remarkable, difficult, and complicated woman who was her mother. And now, in an honest, open memoir about Brooke's life and this layered relationship, she will share the
story of her journey. Although played out in the public eye, these are experiences and feelings relatable to
anyone who has ever had a mother.

Brad Hutchins has been living a young bloke's dream: getting paid to travel the world and watch sport. Sitting court-side on the pro tennis circuit, he uses his phone to transmit results to a gambling syndicate,
taking advantage of the time delay in TV broadcasts to beat other online punters to the big pay-offs. His
stories from life on the road capture the adventures and mishaps that come with following the world's best

But like card counters in casinos, court-siders are despised by the tennis establishment. The more time
Brad spends at tournaments, the harder it becomes for him to evade the security guards who are hell-bent

roguish spirit of The Wolf of Wall Street or Catch Me If You Can.

The daughter of a prominent Palestinian father and a sophisticated Lebanese mother, Najla Said grew up
in New York City, confused and conflicted about her cultural background and identity, unsure about who
she was supposed to be, and often in denial of the differences she sensed between her family and those
around her. She may have been born a Palestinian-Lebanese American, but in Najla's mind she grew up
first as a WASP (baptized Episcopalian in Boston; attending the wealthy Upper East Side girls' school
Chapin), then as a teenaged Jew, essentially denying her true roots, even to herself, until well into
adulthood. As she grew older, making increased visits to Palestine and Beirut, Najla's world-view shifted,
making it impossible for Najla to continue to pick and choose her identity, in some ways allowing her to see
herself and her passions more clearly. 'A compassionate and candid book on her courageous coming-of-age in contemporary America. Said is a
brilliant, talented, and sensitive artist with a larger-than-life, loving father.' Professor Cornel West 'Najla Said has written more than a memoir. Looking for Palestine is a survivor's guide for all of us who

During the glittering decades of the 1920s and 1930s, Elsa Schiaparelli was the undisputed queen of
fashion. Everyone who was anyone, from Vivien Leigh to the Duchess of Windsor, entered her doors on
the Place Vendôme and obediently wore whatever she instructed.
Her clothes were beautifully made, but they were also designed in a manner no one had seen before:
buttons that looked like butterflies, mermaids or carrots, trompe l'oeil pockets that looked like lips, gloves
with red nails appliqued on them. She was unique, and in her day more famous than Chanel.
Born into a prominent Italian family, she moved to London and married a so-called Polish count who
turned out to be a lowborn French con artist. His deportation during World War I saw them move to New
York, where he abandoned Schiaparelli and their infant daughter. Undaunted, she picked herself up,
moved to Paris and launched her meteoric career, surviving World War II despite being under suspicion of
spying from both sides.
In the year when Schiaparelli's fashion house has been relaunched, here is a fascinating and highly
readable portrait of an artist whose brilliance and inventiveness made wearing clothes a pleasure - and so
much fun.

The story of the development and use of the first balloon-expandable coronary stent.
The premise of this intriguing book is technical innovation and scientific development. It is about coronary
and vascular stenting, a technique that has improved the plight of patients who have unfortunately
succumbed to the most devastating epidemic facing modern man – coronary and vascular atherosclerosis.
It is also about a lifetime and a career devoted to finding safer, effective, and less invasive solutions to
these clinical problems.
Dr Gary S. Roubin, MD, PhD, writes of the pioneering work done by Andreas Gruentzig on balloon
angioplasty for peripheral and coronary arteries. After Gruentzig's untimely death, Roubin was determined
that Gruentzig's method would indeed work. He writes of the work involved to get the balloon-expandable

The true, fascinating story behind the rabbits-to-riches ascendancy of one of Australia's most
powerful men.
Plucked from an orphanage as an infant, Kerry Stokes grew up in the slums and streets of post-Depression
Melbourne with his itinerant, adoptive parents. As a boy he trapped, skinned and sold rabbits to make
ends meet, and seemed destined to a life of hardship and poverty.
Today Stokes is one of Australia's most successful business moguls, with interests in property, mining,
construction equipment and media. He picked the boom in China ahead of the pack, and has forged strong
relationships there. He is a recipient of Australia's highest civil honour, and in 2013 he was a nominee for
Australian of the Year. He owns what is probably the finest private art collection in the country, and has sat
on the governing bodies of some of our leading cultural institutions. As the Packer family departs the media
and the Murdoch clan tackles damage to its reputation on three continents, Stokes is emerging as the
single most influential media proprietor in Australia.
Yet Stokes has remained relatively low-profile, and is notoriously private. Mysterious and elusive, Stokes is
the archetypal self-made man, driven by the determination to escape his past and the legacy of
disadvantage. But at what cost?

In Then Everything Changed, Jeff Greenfield created an 'utterly compelling' (Joe Klein), 'riveting' (The New
York Times), 'eye-opening' (Peggy Noonan), 'captivating' (Doris Kearns Goodwin) exploration of three
modern alternate histories, 'with the kind of political insight and imagination only he possesses' (David
Gregory). Based on memoirs, histories, oral histories, fresh reporting, and his own knowledge of the
players, the book looked at the tiny hinges of history—and the extraordinary changes that would have
resulted if they had gone another way.
Now he presents his most compelling narrative of all about the historical event that has riveted us for fifty
years. What if Kennedy were not killed that fateful day? What would the 1964 campaign have looked like?
Would changes have been made to the ticket? How would Kennedy, in his second term, have approached
Vietnam, civil rights, the Cold War? With Hoover as an enemy, would his indiscreet private life finally have
become public? Would his health issues have become so severe as to literally cripple his presidency? And
what small turns of fate in the days and years before Dallas might have kept him from ever reaching the
White House in the first place?
As with Then Everything Changed, the answers Greenfield provides and the scenarios he develops are
startlingly realistic, rich in detail, shocking in their projections, but always deeply, remarkably plausible. It is
a tour de force of American political history.
Praise for If Kennedy Lived
'It can be an enlightening exercise to challenge the belief that what happened had to happen. Usually it
didn't. In his diverting If Kennedy Lived, Greenfield, the veteran political commentator, asks how things
might have played out had John F. Kennedy survived in Dallas.' The New York Times Book Review
'On the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination, this is the book to read. An intelligent, often haunting
book about what America and the world would have looked like if John Kennedy had lived . . . It's a clever,
moving book.' Fareed Zakaria
'Greenfield grounds his fictional history in research and interviews with some of the era's experts and, as in
his previous excursion into alternative history, offers an ending that the reader will not see coming . . .
Kennedy-era followers will enjoy this book.' Library Journal
'Greenfield does good service in demythologizing JFK to suggest that, had he indeed lived, his second
term might have been marked by scandal and controversy, a Camelot undone by the president's own
proclivities as much as by the events of the time . . . Well researched and thought through—an interesting,
plausible exercise in pop history.' Kirkus Reviews

This magnificent new biography revolutionizes our understanding of Stalin and his world.
In January 1928 Stalin, the ruler of the largest country in the world, boarded a train bound for Siberia
where he would embark upon the greatest gamble of his political life. He was about to begin the largest
programme of social reengineering ever attempted: the root-and-branch uprooting and collectivization of
agriculture and industry across the entire Soviet Union. Millions would die, and many more would suffer.
How did Stalin get to this point? Where did such great, monstrous power come from?
The first of three volumes, the product of a decade of scrupulous and intrepid research, this landmark
book offers the most convincing portrait and explanation yet of Stalin's power, and of Russian power in the
world. Stalin contains a host of astonishing revelations. Here Kotkin draws on materials from Soviet military
intelligence and the secret police to give an intimate first-ever view of the Bolshevik regime's inner
geography. He details Stalin's invention of a fabricated trial and mass executions as early as 1918, the
technique he would later impose across the whole country. And he places Stalin's momentous decision for
collectivization more deeply than ever in the tragic history of imperial Russia. This book is as much about the Russia that Stalin inherits and reshapes as about the man himself. It gives
a brilliantly nuanced picture of the sequence of catastrophes that disposed of the social structures, armies,
rivals and close colleagues that should have stood in Stalin's way, as he emerged from obscurity to
shoulder the terrifying responsibility of upholding Russian power in the world.

Cotton is so ubiquitous and important as to be almost invisible and yet its story lies at the heart of the
world's history, and at the heart of the history of capitalism.
For about 900 years, from 1000 to 1900, cotton was the world's most important manufacturing industry.
Essential to millions of people, it made fortunes, encouraged imperial expansions, brought millions of
workers into factories, and helped a few states gain enormous power. Sven Beckert's superb new book is a history of the overwhelming role played by cotton in dictating the
shape of our world. For centuries it was central to India's prosperity. It formed the core of Britain and
Europe's industrial revolution. It revived and modernized slavery in the American South. Cotton stood at
the centre of a newly global economy and generated enormous wealth - and previously unimaginable

stacked on top of each other they would have made a somewhat unstable tower 40,000 miles high. Empire of Cotton traces the global history of capitalism by charting the history of a product that every one
of us is closely in touch with. It is both a gripping narrative and a brilliant case history of how the modern
world emerged.

Mass international migration is a response to extreme global inequality, and immigration has a profound
impact on the way we live. Here, world-renowned economist Paul Collier seeks to defuse this explosive
subject. Exodus looks at how people from the world's poorest societies struggle to migrate to the rich
West: the effects on those left behind and on the host societies, and explores the impulses and thinking
that inform Western immigration policy. Migration, he concludes, is a fact, and we urgently need to think
clearly about its possibilities and challenges: it is not a question of whether migration is good or bad, but
how much is best?

who it really helps.' Ian Birrell, Observer

History has not been kind to Jefferson Davis. His cause went down in disastrous defeat and left the South
impoverished for generations. If that cause had succeeded, it would have torn the United States in two and
preserved the institution of slavery. Many Americans in Davis's own time and in later generations
considered him an incompetent leader, if not a traitor. Not so, argues James M. McPherson. In Embattled
Rebel, McPherson shows us that Davis might have been on the wrong side of history, but it is too easy to
diminish him because of his cause's failure. In order to understand the Civil War and its outcome, it is
essential to give Davis his due as a military leader and as the president of an aspiring Confederate nation.
Davis did not make it easy on himself. His subordinates and enemies alike considered him difficult,
egotistical, and cold. He was gravely ill throughout much of the war, often working from home and even
from his sickbed. Nonetheless, McPherson argues, Davis shaped and articulated the principal policy of the
Confederacy with clarity and force: the quest for independent nationhood. Although he had not been a firebreathing secessionist, once he committed himself to a Confederate nation he never deviated from
this goal. In a sense, Davis was the last Confederate left standing in 1865.
As president of the Confederacy, Davis devoted most of his waking hours to military strategy

and operations, along with Commander Robert E. Lee, and delegated the economic and
diplomatic functions of strategy to his subordinates. Davis was present on several battlefields with Lee
and even took part in some tactical planning; indeed, their close relationship stands as one of the
great military-civilian partnerships in history.
Most critical appraisals of Davis emphasize his choices in and management of generals rather than his
strategies, but no other chief executive in American history exercised such tenacious hands-on influence in
the shaping of military strategy. And while he was imprisoned for two years after the Confederacy's
surrender awaiting a trial for treason that never came, and lived for another twenty-four years, he never
once recanted the cause for which he had fought and lost. McPherson gives us Jefferson Davis as the
commander in chief he really was, showing persuasively that while Davis did not win the war for the South,
he was scarcely responsible for losing it.

Despite living in a world of almost constant crisis, we still seem to accept that capitalism - a dangerously
enticing, promiscuous, roller-coaster of an ideology - represents the best of all possible worlds.
Alternatives, such as greater equality, democracy and solidarity, seem by contrast stodgy and boring, when
they're not downright dangerous: following such a path can only lead us into a grey, over-regulated society.
But, Slavoj Žižek argues in this timely intervention, this couldn't be further from the truth.
If we are really to imagine a better way, we need to understand that it is capitalism which offers us the
dreariest of futures - always serving up more of the same in the guise of constant change - and that the
struggle for emancipation, by contrast, is the most daring of all ventures.
To analyze our current predicament, the famous philosopher draws on everything from music videos and
Batman to Marx and Lacan. Laying bare the workings of the capitalist system, Žižek outlines the future that
awaits us if we do not demand radical change, and explores the possibilities - and the traps - of new
emancipatory battles. Our new heroes, he explains, should be Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning and
Edward Snowden. But can we follow their example and break out of ideological constraints? Trouble in
Paradise shows that we absolutely have to do so unless we want to live in a world full of zombies and
vampires.

Author of the groundbreaking #1 New York Times bestseller This Town, Mark Leibovich returns with a
masterly collection of portraits of Washington's elite, and wannabe elites. Hailed by The Washington Post
as a 'master of the political profile,' Leibovich has spent his career writing memorable, buzz-worthy, and
often jaw-dropping features about politicians and other notables. Currently chief national correspondent for
The New York Times Magazine, Leibovich punctures the inflated personas of the powerful, and in Citizens
of the Green Room, he reveals the lives, stories, and peculiarities behind the public masks.
A brilliant reporter with a talent for subversive, engaging storytelling, Leibovich maintains a refreshing
conviviality with many of his subjects even as he renders incisive and unflinching assessments. His
features have driven the national conversation while exposing the fallibilities of the kingmakers and media
stars: consider his 2007 profile of Hillary Clinton, which unearthed a treasure trove of old letters that the
then senator had written as a vulnerable young college student; or his much-talked-about 2010 portrait of
Glenn Beck, which laid bare the tortured soul and precarious standing of the once invincible host and his
uneasy relationship with his soon-to-be ex-employer FOX News. In the political arena, Leibovich's portraits
of John Kerry, Paul Ryan, Chris Christie, and John McCain are already classics; they invariably remind us
that great journalism and stylish writing are not only essential to the Republic but necessary to maintain the
citizenry's sanity and humor in the face of made-for-TV government.

Could everything we know about fossil fuels be wrong?
For decades, environmentalists have told us that using fossil fuels is a self-destructive addiction that will
destroy our planet. Yet at the same time, by every measure of human well-being, from life expectancy to
clean water to climate safety, life has been getting better and better.
How can this be?
The explanation, energy expert Alex Epstein argues in The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels, is that we usually
hear only one side of the story. We're taught to think only of the negatives of fossil fuels, their risks and
http://sams-au.pearson.com.au/UI_Services/catalogue/default.cfm[18/11/2014 2:52:30 p.m.]
Catalogue
side effects, but not their positives—their unique ability to provide cheap, reliable energy for a world of
seven billion people. And the moral significance of cheap, reliable energy, Epstein argues, is woefully
underrated. Energy is our ability to improve every single aspect of life, whether economic or environmental.
If we look at the big picture of fossil fuels compared with the alternatives, the overall impact of using fossil
fuels is to make the world a far better place. We are morally obligated to use more fossil fuels for the sake
of our economy and our environment.
Drawing on original insights and cutting-edge research, Epstein argues that most of what we hear about
fossil fuels is a myth. For instance . . .
Myth: Fossil fuels are dirty.
Truth: The environmental benefits of using fossil fuels far outweigh the risks. Fossil fuels don't take a
naturally clean environment and make it dirty; they take a naturally dirty environment and make it clean.
They don't take a naturally safe climate and make it dangerous; they take a naturally dangerous climate
and make it ever safer.
Myth: Fossil fuels are unsustainable, so we should strive to use 'renewable' solar and wind.
Truth: The sun and wind are intermittent, unreliable fuels that always need backup from a reliable source
of energy—usually fossil fuels. There are huge amounts of fossil fuels left, and we have plenty of time to
find something cheaper.
Myth: Fossil fuels are hurting the developing world.
Truth: Fossil fuels are the key to improving the quality of life for billions of people in the developing world.
If we withhold them, access to clean water plummets, critical medical machines like incubators become
impossible to operate, and life expectancy drops significantly. Calls to 'get off fossil fuels' are calls to
degrade the lives of innocent people who merely want the same opportunities we enjoy in the West.
Taking everything into account, including the facts about climate change, Epstein argues that 'fossil fuels
are easy to misunderstand and demonize, but they are absolutely good to use. And they absolutely need
to be championed . . . Mankind's use of fossil fuels is supremely virtuous—because human life is the
standard of value and because using fossil fuels transforms our environment to make it wonderful for
human life.'

His iconic translation of an ancient Chinese novel, illustrated with his paintings, was praised by scholars

This new edition celebrates Fairweather's creative legacy; and the classic tale of Buddhist monk Chi-Tien,
often drunk and irreverent but nonetheless considered a saint, continues to resonate.

Meet Rev. Adam Smallbone, recently promoted from a sleepy rural parish to funky, inner-city St Saviour's

loving, but agnostic wife, Alex.
As Adam struggles with the unfamiliar demands of his new parish, there aren't many he can turn to.
There's the wild Colin, the waspish Archdeacon, the pompous Nigel, the smothering Adoha and Ellie, the
formidably attractive headmistress of the local C of E school. There's God of course. There's always God.
But in Adam's hour of need, will God - and Alex - be enough?

With 50 Foods, noted authority Edward Behr has created the definitive guide to the foods every food lover
must know. A culinary Baedeker, 50 Foods will delight and inform the connoisseur as well as the novice.
Like Behr's celebrated magazine, The Art of Eating, 50 Foods presents simple, practical information about
buying, using, preparing, and enjoying. Behr focuses on aroma, appearance, flavor, and texture to
determine what 'the best' means for each food. He tells you how to select top quality—signs of freshness
and ripeness, best season, top varieties, proper aging. If the way to prepare, serve, or eat something is
little known, then he explains it (how to open an oyster, why the best way to cook green beans is boiling,
how to clean a whole salted anchovy, when to eat and when to discard the rind of a cheese). Behr also
names the most complementary foods and flavors for each of these fifty marvelous foods and the wines
that go with them.
The fifty selections provide a broad sensory range for the modern gourmet. Most of the foods are raw
materials, but some have been fermented or otherwise transformed—into bread, ham, cheese. Six of the
fifty are cheeses. As Behr explains, cheese is probably the best food, as wine is the best drink. Behr

tissues that it had not been able to reach for some time. It was relieving and healing, subtler than the
feeling from getting off on drugs, but it was detectable and lovely and, of course, there was no hangover,

Most of us deal with addiction in some form. While you may not be a fall-down drunk, anorexic, or a
gambling addict, you likely struggle with addiction in other ways. Workaholism, overeating, and
compulsively engaging with technology like video games, texting, and Facebook are also highly common
examples. And if you don't suffer from addiction, chances are you know someone who does.
Through more than 20 years of recovery and in working professionally with others, Tommy Rosen has
uncovered core elements of recovery and healing, what he refers to as Recovery 2.0. In the book, he
shares his own past struggles with addiction, and powerful, tested tools for breaking free from the
obstacles that stand in the way of a holistic and lasting recovery. Building off the key tenets of the 12-Step
program, he has developed an innovative approach that includes:
Looking at the roots of addiction; your family history and 'Addiction Story'
Daily breathing practices, meditation, yoga and body awareness
A healthy, alkaline-based diet to aid with detox, boost immunity, increase vitality, support your entire
recovery and help prevent relapse
Discovering your mission, living on purpose, and being of service to others

What does an economist who died in 1790 have to say about the moral life, the good life, the mystery of
human interaction, and the place that ambition and fame play in our lives? Plenty.
The Wealth of Nations remains a pillar in economic theory, but Adam Smith considered his other, lesser
known great work a superior book. Economics professor Russell Roberts always meant to read The
Theory of Moral Sentiments, and when he finally did, it changed his life.
Rather than read the dense tome, Roberts has devised an ingenious way to 'channel' Adam Smith by
presenting his lessons in an accessible and fun way.

The New York Times bestselling author of Sweetness delivers the first all-encompassing account of the
1980s Los Angeles Lakers, one of professional sports' most-revered—and dominant—dynasties.
The Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s personified the flamboyance and excess of the decade over which
they reigned. Beginning with the arrival of Earvin 'Magic' Johnson as the number-one overall pick of the
1979 draft, the Lakers played basketball with gusto and pizzazz, unleashing their famed 'Showtime' runand-gun style on a league unprepared for their speed and ferocity—and became the most captivating
show in sports and, arguably, in all-around American entertainment. The Lakers' roster overflowed with
exciting all-star-caliber players, including center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and they were led by the
incomparable Pat Riley, known for his slicked-back hair, his Armani suits, and his arrogant strut.
Hollywood's biggest celebrities lined the court and gorgeous women flocked to the arena. Best of all, the
team was a winner. Between 1980 and 1991, the Lakers played in an unmatched nine NBA championship
series, capturing five of them.
Bestselling sportswriter Jeff Pearlman draws from almost three hundred interviews to take the first full
measure of the Lakers' epic Showtime era. A dazzling account of one of America's greatest sports
sagas, Showtime is packed with indelible characters, vicious rivalries, and jaw-dropping, behind-thescenes stories of the players' decadent Hollywood lifestyles. From the Showtime era's remarkable rise to
its tragic end—marked by Magic Johnson's 1991 announcement that he had contracted HIV—Showtime is
a gripping narrative of sports, celebrity, and 1980s-style excess.

When the dust settled on post-Thatcherite Britain its core working-class industrial and political institutions
had been eviscerated. Social housing was sold off, and the local boozer was closing as the wine bar
arrived. Blackpool was down-at-heel and Butlin's were closing their camps, good now for sit-com nostalgia
rather than family holidays. Yet among the rubble of industrial Britain, football was still standing. And nearly
three decades later football has made the transition from a dying sport to a booming sector of the
entertainment industry.
Once merely popular, even widespread, now football is ubiquitous and its status in both popular and elite
cultures greatly elevated. Football fills more pews than the Church of England and sells more tickets than
the theatre; a publicly advertised interest in football has become the norm among Britain's politicians; and
the nation's commentators have taken on football as a metaphor for the country's achievements and ills.
How did it happen and what does it mean? David Goldblatt - author of the highly acclaimed history of
world football, The Ball is Round - tracks the changes in the game which uncannily mirror the momentous

economic, political and social changes of society generally in the post-Thatcher era.
In all of these domains, the last twenty-five years of English football have seen advances and reverses.
The economic penury and dismal infrastructure of the past have gone, but the creeping anodyne uniformity
of consumer capitalism has replaced it. Crowds are bigger, the football is better, but the atmosphere, more
often than not, falls short of expectations. The culture of football has been opened up to women and
minorities, but its ruling masculinities remain stuck in a narrow groove. Football fans are more organized
and networked than ever, but the governance of the game feels less democratic.
We have been mourning the passing of industrial Britain for over two decades. The further we are removed
from that era, and what we remember as its values, the more football has kept those notions imaginatively
alive. Yet at the same time its ruling institutions have created an economic model and a system of
governance that nurture their opposites. In The Game of Our Lives, David Goldblatt argues that football is
among our last and most precious collective projects in an atomized society. Football is a social-democratic
game in a neo-liberal world.

The Squared Circle grows out of David Shoemaker's writing for Deadspin, where he started the column
'Dead Wrestler of the Week' (which boasts over 1 million page views)—a feature on the many wrestling
superstars who died too young because of the abuse they subject their bodies to—and his writing for
Grantland, where he covers the pro wrestling world, and its place in the pop culture mainstream.
Shoemaker's sportswriting has since struck a nerve with generations of wrestling fans who—like him—
grew up worshipping a sport often derided as 'fake' in the wider culture. To them, these professional
wrestling superstars are not just heroes but an emotional outlet and the lens through which they learned to
see the world.
Starting in the early 1900s and exploring the path of pro wrestling in America through the present day, The
Squared Circle is the first book to acknowledge both the sport's broader significance and wrestling fans'
keen intellect and sense of irony. Divided into eras, each section offers a snapshot of the wrestling world,
profiles some of the period's preeminent wrestlers, and the sport's influence on our broader culture.
Through the brawling, bombast, and bloodletting, Shoemaker argues that pro wrestling can teach us about
the nature of performance, audience, and, yes, art.
Full of unknown history, humor, and self-deprecating reminiscence—but also offering a compelling look at
the sport's rightful place in pop culture—The Squared Circle is the book that legions of wrestling fans have
been waiting for. In it, Shoemaker teaches us to look past the spandex and body slams to see an art form
that can explain the world.

An urgent message for sleep-deprived parents: You don't have to suffer through 'cry-it-out' or
attachment parenting's 'co-sleeping'. There's another way!
Parents spend a great deal of energy coaxing, singing, and swinging their children to sleep. Yet over time,
all that cajoling can actually have the opposite of its desired effect. Most parents do what works today but
don't notice when it's no longer needed tomorrow, and then push harder when it becomes a hindrance the
day after that.
The Happy Sleeper shows parents how to avoid and undo cumbersome sleep habits. Mindfulness—the
practice of using focused attention and being present and open—serves as the foundation for the
techniques in this book. Using these methods in a thoughtful and loving way, parents can guide their
children in learning how to soothe themselves to sleep—putting little kids (and the whole family!) on track
to a full night's sleep.
The Happy Sleeper features a foreword by neuropsychiatrist and popular parenting expert Dr Daniel
Siegel, author of Parenting from the Inside Out and the international bestseller Brainstorm.

An intimate history of Earth and the quest for life beyond the solar system.
For 4.6 billion years our living planet has been alone in a vast and silent universe. But soon, Earth's
isolation could come to an end. Over the past two decades, astronomers have discovered thousands of
planets orbiting other stars. Some of these exoplanets may be mirror images of our own world. And more
are being found all the time.
Yet as the pace of discovery quickens, an answer to the universe's greatest riddle still remains just out of
reach: Is the great silence and emptiness of the cosmos a sign that we and our world are somehow
singular, special, and profoundly alone, or does it just mean that we're looking for life in all the wrong
places? As star-gazing scientists come closer to learning the truth, their insights are proving ever more
crucial to understanding life's intricate mysteries and possibilities right here on Earth.
Science journalist Lee Billings explores the past and future of the 'exoplanet boom' through in-depth
reporting and interviews with the astronomers and planetary scientists at its forefront. He recounts the
stories behind their world-changing discoveries and captures the pivotal moments that drove them forward
in their historic search for the first habitable planets beyond our solar system. Billings brings readers close
to a wide range of fascinating characters, such as:
Frank Drake, a pioneer who has used the world's greatest radio telescopes to conduct the first searches
for extraterrestrial intelligence and to transmit a message to the stars so powerful that it briefly outshone
our Sun.
Jim Kasting, a mild-mannered former NASA scientist whose research into the Earth's atmosphere and
climate reveals the deepest foundations of life on our planet, foretells the end of life on Earth in the distant
future, and guides the planet hunters in their search for alien life.
Sara Seager, a visionary and iron-willed MIT professor who dreams of escaping the solar system and
building the giant space telescopes required to discover and study life-bearing planets around hundreds of
the Sun's neighboring stars.
Through these and other captivating tales, Billings traces the triumphs, tragedies, and betrayals of the
extraordinary men and women seeking life among the stars. In spite of insufficient funding, clashing
opinions, and the failings of some of our world's most prominent and powerful scientific organizations,

these planet hunters will not rest until they find the meaning of life in the infinite depths of space. Billings
emphasizes that the heroic quest for other Earth-like planets is not only a scientific pursuit, but also a

For the first fifty-eight years of his life James Fallon was by all appearances a normal guy. A successful
neuroscientist and medical school professor, he'd been raised in a loving, supportive family, married his
high school sweetheart, and had three kids and lots of friends.
Then he learned a shocking truth that would not only disrupt his personal and professional life, but would
lead him to question the very nature of his own identity.
The Psychopath Inside tells the fascinating story of Fallon's reaction to the discovery that he has the brain
of a psychopath. While researching serial murderers, he uncovered a distinct neurological pattern in their
brain scans that helped explain their cold and violent behavior. A few months later he learned that he was
descended from a family with a long line of murderers which confirmed that Fallon's own brain pattern
wasn't a fluke.
As a scientist convinced that humans are shaped by their genetics, Fallon set out to reconcile the truth
about his brain with everything he knew about the mind, behavior, and the influence of nature vs. nurture
on our personalities. How could he, a successful scientist and a happy family man with no history of
violence, be a psychopath? How much did his biology influence his behavior? Was he capable of some of
the gruesome atrocities perpetrated by the serial killers he had studied?
Combining his personal experience with scientific analysis, Fallon shares his journey and the discoveries
that ultimately led him to understand that, despite everything science can teach us, humans are even more
complex than we can imagine.

An inspiring and eye-opening exploration of the phenomenon of miracles from the New York Times #1
bestselling author of Bonhoeffer.
What are miracles, and why do so many people believe in them? What do they tell us about ourselves?
And what do we do with experiences that we cannot explain? In Miracles, Eric Metaxas offers compelling — sometimes electrifying — evidence that there's something
real to be reckoned with, whatever one has thought of the topic before. Miracles is also a timely,
thoughtful, and civil answer to the books of the 'New Atheists' — Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens,
and Sam Harris — who have passionately asserted not just the impossibility of miracles and the
supernatural, but the outright harmfulness of belief in them. Metaxas — whom ABC News has called a 'witty ambassador for faith' — provides the measured and wideranging treatment the subject deserves, from serious discussion of the compatibility between faith and
science to astonishing but well-documented stories of actual miracles from people he knows. A more current, anecdotal, and personal version of C. S. Lewis's 1947 book on the subject, Miracles is a
powerfully winsome challenge that miracles are not only possible but are far more widespread than most
of us ever might have imagined.

Tom Zoellner loves trains with a ferocious passion. In his new book he chronicles the innovation and
sociological impact of the railway technology that changed the world, and could very well change it again.
From the frigid trans-Siberian railroad to the antiquated Indian Railways to the futuristic MagLev trains,
Zoellner offers a stirring story of man's relationship with trains. Zoellner examines both the mechanics of
the rails and their engines and how they helped societies evolve. Not only do trains transport people and
goods in an efficient manner, but they also reduce pollution and dependency upon oil. Zoellner also
considers America's culture of ambivalence to mass transit, using the perpetually stalled line between Los
Angeles and San Francisco as a case study in bureaucracy and public indifference.
Train presents both an entertaining history of railway travel around the world while offering a serious and
impassioned case for the future of train travel. London: The Information Capital: 100 maps and graphics chart life in thecity like

It's hard to believe, but this iconic children's story has never been published as a book – until now.
Flick wants to fight fires more than anything in the world. But the grown-up engines say he isn't big enough
or strong enough to help. Poor Flick – he always gets left behind at the station. Will he ever be allowed to
help?
From author James Lawrence: Flick the Little Fire Engine was originally written for broadcasting by Robert
(Bert) Reisfeld. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1906, he lived a large part of his working life in Los Angeles and
wrote music scores for Hollywood films and musicals. He died in Badenweiler Germany in 1991. Flick was
recorded in Hollywood in 1948 on the MGM label on a double 78 RPM album and later on 45 rpm.
Just over 3 years ago I told, my then 3- year-old daughter, the story of Flick by rote. She loved it so much I
made up other stories about Flick's adventures. I then decided to locate the book only to find it didn't exist.
It was clear to me a book had to be made.

Fun with Flax shows how to make items ranging from a simple windmill, a dart and a whistle to more
complex puzzles, balls, birds, fish and even a caterpillar. Each project is described one step at a time with

This book is ideal for kohanga reo, playcentres, kindergartens, Māori crafts groups and New Zealand

generation of flaxworkers.
Mick Pendergrast first became interested in plaiting and other Māori crafts while teaching in small
communities in the East Cape area. He has spent time as a VSA teacher in the Solomon Islands and on
the remote Polynesian outlier of Tikopia, and has worked in a number of New Zealand's major museums.
He is the author of Te Mahi Kete: Māori Basketry for Beginners, Feathers and Fibre, a catalogue of the
first major exhibition of Māori flaxcrafts, of which he was the curator, and Raranga Whakairo, a collection
of plaiting patterns.

Since the European settlement of New Zealand, drovers have moved stock 'on the hoof' from ships and
stations to new homes scattered throughout the country. In this book – the first of its kind – Ruth Entwistle
Low interviews almost 60 old-time drovers, revealing and reliving the practice of droving and the people
who have underpinned it.
Through original research, colourful storytelling and the voices of the drovers themselves, Ruth describes
what the job entailed – where and how they travelled, the problems they faced, the ups and downs of the
lifestyle.
Ranging all over rural New Zealand, from our colonial past to the droving industry's 'twilight' years, Ruth
documents both the day-to-day and the dramatic in a gripping narrative that will appeal to a wide body of
readers.
On the Hoof is a truly special book – a heartland history of New Zealand that seeks not simply to explain
the drover and the droving way of life, but to honour them also.

This lively portrait offers insights into Key's life, personality, political motivations and ambitions. Journalist
John Roughan has secured unconditional access to Key and his family, as well as his closest advisers.
Roughan examines how the twin ambitions of a boy in a state house, 'to make a million dollars and be

The Vietnam War was New Zealand's longest and most controversial military engagement of the
twentieth century.
No Front Line explores this war like never before, from the perspective of New Zealanders who were there
, in their own words: on operations, on a mission for good, on orders, or simply out for adventure. It relays
military, civilian and domestic histories in a narrative that is at once sincere, direct and undeniable –
sometimes shocking and always absorbing.
These war stories take readers on operations with gunners, infantrymen, pilots and troopers who face fear
and heartbreak, and who witness the devastation of a country at war.
The book also includes important reflections from non-combatant engineers, medics, aid workers and
administrators; it profiles civilian and service personnel treating Vietnamese casualties in provincial
hospitals; it places on record the integral role of women in Vietnam: as nurses, doctors, aid workers,
journalists and entertainers. Back home in New Zealand, veterans' families recall the war's reach into the
suburbs – both then and now.
Personal testimonies in No Front Line are drawn from a collectionof 150 oral history interviews recorded
over five years. They present a fresh perspective on New Zealand's collective experience of the Vietnam
War – an episode in history that cannot be ignored.

'I've been to hell and I'm back. If you're in that same place, then I understand what you're going
through.'
John Kirwan was one of the most devastating wingers New Zealand, and world, rugby had ever seen. A
prominent and revered figure at the dawn of the professional age of rugby, he seemed to live a charmed
life.
But nobody knew, though, that behind closed doors 'JK' was living a life of torment. Afflicted with
depression for many years – including those as a high-profile sportsman – Kirwan was able to survive by
reaching out, seeking help from those closest to him.
All Blacks Don't Cry is John Kirwan's story of hope, of working through the pain and living a full life. It is a
poignant, inspirational and helpful example for anybody battling depression.
At my worst moments, I lost all sense of hope for the future. As I began to slowly get better, I
began to be able to say to myself, 'This will pass, you'll get through this. Hang on to hope.'

Once described as 'Barry Crump meets Fred Dagg', 'Big Al' Lester is the modern-day master of the
hunting genre.
'I'm often asked what inspired me to take up writing yarns about the mishaps and mayhem that I have
endured while venturing into the New Zealand bush.'
'In truth, I am an average to poor hunter who has had more hunting cock-ups than the rest of the country
combined. For every deer I've successfully shot, dozens have escaped only to hide in the bush peering
back at me, clearly laughing at my stupidity. I have always managed to see the funny side of the situation
and had a good old laugh at myself. I began to wonder if my stuff-ups, with a bit of humour and mayhem
thrown in, might just make for good reading – the oddball, unusual, humorous, weird and fun side of
hunting – and gave it a go. I must have got something right.'—'Big Al' Lester

Baffin Island, North-Western Canada: Husband-and-wife team Sami and Remi Fargo are on an
environmental expedition to the Arctic, when to their astonishment they discover a Viking ship in the ice,
perfectly preserved-and filled with pre-Columbian artifacts from Mexico. It's a combination history
suggests shouldn't be possible. As the couple plunge into their research, tantalizing clues about a link between the Vikings and the
legendary Toltec feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl-and a fabled object known as the Eye of Heavenbegin to emerge. But so do many dangerous people ...
Soon the Fargos find themselves on the run through jungles, temples, and secret tombs, caught between
treasure hunters, crime cartels, and those with a far more personal motivation for stopping them. At the
end of the road will be the solution to a thousand-year-old mystery-or death.

It is 1920, and Prohibition and bootlegging are in full swing. When Isaac Bell's boss and lifelong friend
Joseph Van Dorn is shot and nearly killed leading the high-speed chase of a rum-running vessel, Bell
swears to him that he will hunt down the lawbreakers.
But he doesn't realise that far bigger stakes are in play.
When a witness to Van Dorn's shooting is executed in a ruthless manner invented by the Russian secret

Only one man can stop America's secrets from falling into enemy hands in this blockbuster new novel
written by Tom Clancy's long-time co-author.
Over the course of three decades, Tom Clancy created a world alive with prescient action and remarkable
individuals. In Support and Defend, Dominic Caruso, one of Clancy's most popular characters, is
presented with the deadliest challenge of his career.
Dominic Caruso. Nephew of President Jack Ryan. FBI agent and operator for The Campus, a top secret
intelligence agency that works off the books for the U.S. government. Already scarred by the death of his
brother, Caruso is devastated when he can't save a friend and his family from a terrorist attack.
Ethan Ross was a mid-level staffer for the National Security Council. Now he's a wanted fugitive on the run
with a micro-drive that contains enough information to wreck American intelligence efforts around the
world. The CIA is desperate to get the drive back, but so are the Russians and various terrorist groups, all
of whom are closer to catching the fugitive. Only Caruso stands in their way, but can he succeed without
the aid of his Campus colleagues?

On a sunny afternoon in November 2010, in the beautiful Paparoa Range of the South Island, a massive
explosion rocked an underground coal mine. Later that day two ashen men stumbled from the entrance.
Twenty-nine men remained unaccounted for. Initial probes revealed fatally high methane levels in the mine
– conditions deemed unsurvivable for the trapped men. But it was only after a second blast five days later
that all hope was extinguished.
Tragedy at Pike River Mine is a dramatic, superbly researched and page-turning account of a disaster that
should never have happened, of the dramatic political and legal fallout, and the effect on the small West
Coast community. It reveals an appalling string of mistakes, from consent being given for the mine in the
first place, to lack of proper monitoring equipment, pressure to ignore safety requirements, and effectively
only a single exit. It puts a human face on the people who suffered, and provides penetrating insight on
who's to blame.
This is an essential read for everyone who cares about the future of New Zealand and our values as a
nation. Rebecca Macfie's writing on Pike River has been hailed for its veracity, perspicacity and powerful
human interest.

named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. Nineteen times, to be exact. On a road trip miles from
home, this anagram-happy, washed-up child prodigy has ten thousand dollars in his pocket, a bloodthirsty
feral hog on his trail, and an overweight Judge Judy - loving best friend riding shotgun - but no Katherines.
Colin is on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which he hopes will
predict the future of any relationship, avenge Dumpees everywhere, and finally win him the girl.

conclusions in this ingeniously layered comic novel about reinventing oneself.

When the words in a tedious tome decide that life is just too dull, they escape. The world will never be the
same again. The words jump into street signs, they leap onto shop signs, they decorate pathways and
roadways and ponds. But one day they go too far . . .
Award-winning illustrator Vasanti Unka has created a picture book complete with miniature book inserts
which is as ingenious as it is delightful. The Boring Book explores the importance of books and words in a
fun and imaginative way. Children and adults alike will love it. The Boring Book is NOT a boring book.
'The New Zealand Post Margaret Mahy Book of the Year is a remarkable book that exceeds any
expectations of its genre. It exhibits the highest quality of design and its presentation is thoroughly original.
The story takes delightful unexpected turns that charm afresh with each reading. Small children and older
readers alike will be delighted by its subversive touches and entertained by its warmth and fun. The risks
taken by the author perfectly illustrate the dangers of being careless with those powerful things – words.
For a long time to come, a well-loved companion for readers of all ages is sure to be The Boring Book.' -
