Veil Talk: Examining the Many Facets
Dr. Shahnaz Khan

Dr. Shahnaz Khan is speaking about the history and popular representations of the veil
and the various ways Muslim women’s lives are challenging current stereotypes. She is a
professor in Global Studies and Women’s Studies at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University. Her
research interests are violence against women, criminalization of women, women and
Pakistan, Zina laws in Pakistan, diasporic space, Muslim women in Canada, and feminist
methodology.

Dr. Mary Herring says that everything about Hillary Rodham Clinton including her name
elicits complex and varied reactions. As the first woman with a serious chance of attaining
the presidential nomination for the Democratic party in the U.S., she sparks responses
based on her gender, her character, and the race and gender of her opponent. She is a
professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State University. Her research interests are statistics, American politics, public administration and methodology.

Western Eyes (film, 40 minutes)

Western Eyes examines the impact of racism, societal, and parental pressures on two young
women of Asian descent who consequently view cosmetic surgery as a means of raising
their self-esteem and acceptance in society. As they go through their decision-making
process, friends and family contribute their perspectives demonstrating the complexity of
this issue. Ann Shin will be present to discuss the film.
