Mr Wong Kum Wai Southeast Asia IT Director Deloitte Southeast Asia Corporate Introduction A member firm of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and Deloitte Southeast Asia, Deloitte and its affiliates in Malaysia provide audit, consulting, financial advisory, risk management, and tax services to various clients in the country. Mr Wong Kum Wai, Southeast Asia IT Director Deloitte Southeast Asia The ThinkPad is renowned for its robustness and dependability. It’s affectionately known as the ‘TankPad’ in the IT industry. Because most of our employees are highly mobile, a notebook that doesn’t break down easily is the most important criteria that we look for when we evaluate any notebook for our employees. 0U:RQJ.XP:DL Southeast Asia IT Director Deloitte Southeast Asia Deloitte KassimChan is part of Deloitte Southeast Asia—a cluster of member firms operating in Brunei, Guam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam—which was established to deliver measurable value to the particular demands of increasingly intra-regional and fast growing companies and enterprises. All services are provided through the individual member firms, their subsidiaries and affiliates which are separate and independent legal entities. Situation As one of the more progressive firms in its industry, Deloitte is committed to refreshing its IT platform every three to four years. In early 2008, Deloitte decided to embark on a hardware and operating system (from Windows XP to Windows Vista) refresh exercise for the majority of its staff. Due to the nature of its business, 70% of Deloitte’s staff are highly mobile, working on-site at the clients’ premises. As such, a heavy emphasis is placed on the robustness, security, and ease of administration and management notebooks issued to its staff. Solution From the onset, there was only one obvious choice for Wong Kum Wai, Southeast Asia IT Director for Deloitte Southeast Asia, to consider. Historically, Deloitte has been using ThinkPads since 2004. Deloitte’s employees have been using the ThinkPad T42, T43, T60 and T61 for the past 5 years. Furthermore, Wong is a firm believer in the quality of ThinkPads with more than 10 years of experience with the brand. “The ThinkPad is renowned for its robustness and dependability. It’s affectionately known as the ‘TankPad’ in the IT industry. Because most of our employees are highly mobile, a notebook that doesn’t break down easily is the most important criteria that we look for when we evaluate any notebook for our employees,” said Wong. Wong didn’t take long to decide on the ThinkPad T400 as the replacement model for the ThinkPad T42 and T43. With features such as a Top Cover Roll Cage, hard drive magnesium roll cage, airbag-like Active Protection System (APS) and shock-mounted hard drive, it was an easy decision. %HQHÀWV (DVHRIGHSOR\PHQWDQG PDLQWHQDQFHZLWK/HQRYR 7KLQN9DQWDJHWHFKQRORJ\ Aside from a robust product that does not break down easily, Wong wanted a platform that his IT team could easily distribute and maintain Deloitte’s corporate software image. This is another area where the ThinkPad T400 excelled in, thanks to the ImageUltra Builder technology – a built-in ThinkVantage technology that all ThinkPad products are equipped with. With the opinion that IT hardware has long become a commodity, Wong said that organisations should not be just looking at the lowest priced hardware or solutions as necessarily the best choice. Vendors today offer very competitive pricing for their products. Rather, he believes in looking at the bigger picture – vendors that offer services around their hardware at a reasonable price for a lower total cost of ownership. Furthermore, Lenovo guarantees that a their technician will be able to go to any address in Malaysia to rectify any repairs or maintenance issue that may arise. This level of service enables Wong’s IT team is able to focus on more important IT tasks that are core to Deloitte’s business – further lowering the total cost of ownership without having to dedicate additional management resources. Additionally, the low failure rate of the extremely robust T400 reduces the down-time associated with repairs. Looking Ahead Based on his experience managing a large organisation IT infrastructure, Wong points out that the cost of services such as repairs and maintenance can and will drive up the total cost of ownership over a period of time. “Organisations can’t view their vendors as just mere hardware providers anymore. They have to select a vendor that is highly service-driven, offering a high quality level of service and timely delivery at a reasonable price. Lenovo is able to meet this requirement and beyond,” said Wong. The 500 units of ThinkPad T400 are covered by on-site warranty. Lenovo provides comprehensive on-site service to Deloitte offices within Malaysia. Moving forward, Wong is evaluating the possibility of moving onto the Windows 7 platform in 2010. While this is another major technology refresh exercise for Deloitte, Wong knows that Lenovo will be able to once again deliver the goods. “Not only does Lenovo have products that customers can depend on, it also understands what the customers’ requirements and needs are. Couple these with the excellent support and service and innovative technology leadership, Lenovo is the perfect business and technology partner for any customer today,” said Wong.
