PRESS RELEASE Date: 16th September 2013 INTERPRETATION PANEL FOR THE SECOND BATTLE OF NEWBURY: FUNDRAISING WALK The Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Anthony Pick, and the Battlefields Trust are promoting an interpretation panel for the Second Battle of Newbury, along the same lines as the interpretation panel for the First Battle which was unveiled in Wash Common recreation ground in 2012. To raise funds for it, a walk along the course of the Battle will take place on Sunday 13th October, led by Simon Marsh of the Battlefields Trust, an expert on the Battle. The walk will be in two parts: 10:30 a.m., starting at the entrance to Speen Recreation ground, Station Road, Speen; and 2:30 p.m., starting outside Shaw House, Church Road, Shaw. The cost will be £10 for one or both walks. Those wishing to take part should book a place with Mr Marsh on 01844 274112 or mercia@battlefieldstrust.com The Battlefields Trust is the UK’s battlefield heritage and preservation group www.battlefieldstrust.com West Berkshire Council has agreed in principle to site the panel in the grounds of Shaw House, the headquarters of King Charles I and a centre of the Battle. The Battle took place on 27th October 1644, resulting in a royalist defeat, and gave rise to a sequence of events which created Cromwell’s New Model Army and the final defeat of the King. Cllr Anthony Pick said “The interpretation panel will explain and commemorate this pivotal event in English history, and I am sure that the walk will give those taking part a vivid understanding of the Battle.” END Anthony Pick, Mayor of Newbury (mayor@newbury.gov.uk 01635 41583) Town Hall, Market Place, Newbury RG14 5AA Tel: (01635) 35486 Fax: (01635) 40484 towncouncil@newbury.gov.uk www.newbury.gov.uk
