CALLING ALL ARTISTS THE STUDENTS OF ROOM 313 1 NATHAN SAWAYA BY DANIELLE V. Nathan Sawaya is a very famous 3D Lego artist. He builds large scale pieces only from the rectangle Lego piece. His art is in museums and are sold to different people. These are some of Nathan Sawaya’s art pieces and Lego bricks. NATHAN SAWAYA It all started with his first Lego set. Nathan Sawaya was born July 10, 1973, in Colville, WA. He took college at New York University School of Law, New York University. He never thought his art would go so far so decided to go work at a law firm. After every day of work from the law Nathan would go home and make art. He would paint, draw, and sculpt. One day he was challenged to make a sculpture with a childhood toy - the Lego. He did a large scale piece. Then Nathan Sawaya's friends and family encouraged him to do more. He started making statues for gifts and parties. Then he noticed there was something to it, so he created a website of all his sculptures. Then he started get- ting paid to make art. When Nathan Sawaya's website got so many hits he quit the law and instead decided to be an artist and play with blocks all day. Nathan Sawaya made custom three dimensional sculptures and mosaics. But was always most popular with his three dimensional Lego art. His art studio was in New York. He has over 2.5 million bricks for when he wants to start creating he has all he needs to create 3D statues. Nathan Sawaya says that the Lego piece he only uses is the rectangle Lego brick. He says that because he likes the sharp edges that you see when you're up close. Then when you go far away you can see roundish shapes in the statute. The whole point of the creating was to inspire people to create 2 their own art. One piece he is famous for is Yellow. It is a 3D sculpture of a yellow man ripping his stomach apart with his insides coming out. 3 REFERENCES 1.Thrillable hours: Nathan sawaya, Lego artist. (2013, April 29). Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch artist. He was born on March 30, 1853 to his parents Theodorus and Anna Carbentus Van Gogh. He died on July 29, 1890 at the age of 37. As a child Van Gogh showed no interest in art, but he did receive some encouragement from his mother to draw and paint. I believe if Van Gogh didn’t have some encouragement to paint he wouldn’t have become an artist. VINCENT VAN GOGH Van Gogh had 5 siblings named Theo van Gogh, Will van Gogh, Cornelis Vincent van Gogh, Anna Cornelia van Gogh, Elisabeth Huberta Du Quesne-van Gogh. As a teenager he drew and painted regularly. Van Gogh grew up among the wheat fields and pine forests, and he lived here throughout the rest of his life. Vincent Van Gogh attended the local school when he was seven or eight years old. When he was twelve years old, he was sent to a small private boarding school at Zevenbergen, a town, fifteen miles away from Zundert. According to the principal, who was interviewed around 1930, there was nothing special about the boy, as he did not remember him. At the age of fourteen he began at10 tending a secondary school in Tilburg, but didn’t graduate, probably because his parents weren’t able to afford it anymore. When he turned 16 he began to work in his uncle’s art firm: Goupil and Company. In 1873 he was transferred to the company’s London’s office. Here is when he began to really study art history and began to draw on his spare time. I believe if Van Gogh didn’t study art history he wouldn’t have became interested in art. Sunflower in Vase paintings. Vincent Van Gogh inspired many of artist such as Matisse, Gauguin, Derain, Pollock, and Bacon. I like that Van Gogh painted many self-portraits and many outdoor landscapes. I thought it was sad that he did not become famous for his paintings until he died. He did not get to enjoy the fortune that was made from his paintings. I believe Van Gogh was a very successful artist. Vincent Van Gogh's medium of art work was oil painting on canvas. He became acquainted with the work of impressionism, which used bright, vibrant colors and often painted outdoor landscapes. Impressionism is a type of artwork, in which an artist paints a scene as if you just captured a glimpse of it, with not much detail but with vibrant colors. Vincent had a lot of heart breaks in his life which led him to a lot of depression, and it led him to shoot himself in the chest, he died on July 29, 1890, he was only 37 years old. At the time of his death his artwork was almost unnoticed, he had only sold one painting in his lifetime called The Red Vineyard . Van Gogh had become a successful artist, he had broken new ground in several areas such as landscapes, still lifes, interiors, and portraits, unfortunately he didn’t live to see his success become recognized. It was after he died that his sister-in-law arranged exhibitions of Van Gogh’s work, which started a few years after his death. The exhibitions and the climbing prices of his paintings continued, his paintings are among the highest-valued in the world today. One of Van Gogh’s self portrait called without Beard that he painted for his mother sold at auction in 1998 for $71.5 million dollars. Some of his famous paintings are:The Potato Eaters, Self portrait with Straw Hat, Starry Night Over the Rhone, the Flowering Orchard, and 14 11 Information from: * Vincent van gogh. (n.d.). Dali was a famous artist and did surrealism paintings. DALI'S CHILDHOOD Dali was born in Figueres, a Catalonian village in Spain. Dali was expelled from school because he didn’t want to take his final exams. In school, Dali had noticed that his classmates had interest in his artwork, behavior, and talents. Dali thought that he was an advanced student and refused to take his exams to prove. Because of this, Dali had thought he was too intelligent and smart to have his professors grade him. When Dali was only 16, he witnessed the death of his mother, who had died from breast cancer. In 1922, Dali was invited to be in the San Academy of Fine Arts. Dali mostly used sculpting, drawing, and painting for his picture. 14 He liked to use paint and he quoted “his amazing insanity” to show the dream-like image. He had also experimented with dotism and cubism. Dali also had many other jobs or hobbies than a painter. He was a sculptor and sculpted in his free time. Dali was a filmmaker and wrote poems as well. Dali was mostly known for his surreal messages and he liked to have people think he was insane. One of his accomplishments was to get married to another surreal painter nicknamed Gala. Lastly what I think is interesting about Dali’s work is that he would give messages that you would have to figure out. Here are some regular interesting facts that I found out about Dali. His wife Gala had interest in him, his paintings, his talents, and of course, himself and his love for her. His wife herself had taken him to the next level of paintings and higher levels in his categories. Sometimes Dali would just make a random painting and name it for $40 to $100,000. He once took an easel and put it next to a bathtub and mixed paint with the water. Then he painted a artistic picture, took his friend over, and told her what 15 he was doing. This is the painting that Salvador Dali sold for exactly $40,000. Salvador Dali had also been noticed when he had a museum in Barcelona and in Japan. In 1982, his wife, Gala, had died. Soon after this in January 23, 1989, he had died of heart failure. Salvador Dali was a very unique artist and painter, he was liked and not liked by many people. Dali will always be remembered to this day. This is Salvador Dali. The picture on the left is a famous picture of Dali’s wife, Gala. This is one of the pictures that he used dotism. 16 REFERENCES 1. Pollock is one of the best artists today. He was famous for his abstract art, and drip painting. Pollock had a very hard life, but managed to keep painting. This is his story. Jackson Pollock, Blue Poles, 1953 POLLOCK’S LIFE My artist name is Paul Jackson Pollock, but is known as Jackson Pollock. Pollock was born on January 28, 1912 and died on August 11, 1956. Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming. Pollock died at the age of 44 in East Hampton, New York with an alcohol-related, single-car accident; crashed his car into a tree just one mile away from his home.. In December 1956, months after his death, Pollock was given a large-scale memorial event to look into Pollock’s life and his art, at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City and The Tate in London. Pollock was born into a poor sheep farming family and was originally interested in sculptures, but joined the Art Stu- dents' League of New York in 1929 and was taught painting by Thomas Hart Benton. Pollock was married to a famous painter names Lee Krasner. They married in October 25, 1945. She was a very important part in Pollock’s life. She helped him get to the top and met other famous artist and wealthy buyers. Lee loved Pollock as much as she loved his art. Krasner was born on October 27, 1908 in Brooklen New York, and died June 19,1984 in New York, New York. Her real name was orignally Lena Krassner and her nickname was Lenore. She got her education from Washington Irving High School, Women's Art School of Cooper Union, National Academy of Design. 29 Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent what is on the outside, but seeks to show its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures. Drip painting is a form of abstract art in which paint is dripped or poured onto the canvas. My favorite type of art is drip painting because it can have different types of textures and meaning. Pollock’s art is very exotic and has emotion. Pollock’s father, LeRoy Pollock, was a farmer and a government land surveyor, and his mother, Stella May McClure, was a fierce woman with artistic ambitions. Pollock was the youngest of his five brothers, and was always looking for attention he never receive. He always tried to get attention so one day he cut off his right index finger with a hachet. During his childhood, Pollock's family moved around the West, to Arizona and throughout California. When Pollock was 8, his father, who was an abusive alcoholic, left the family, and Pollock's older brother, Charles, became like a father to him. Charles was an artist, and was considered to be the best in the family. At the time Pollock’s family was living in Los Angeles, so he decited to enroll in the Manual Arts High School. He learned to draw, and did not do very well expressing himself. He was soon expelled for starting fights. Later, in 1930, at age 18, Pollock moved to New York and lived with his older brother Charles. He also was at another art school. In 1929, he soon joined the Art Students’ League of New York, even though he was intrested in sculptures. He was taught by Thomas Hart Benton.(Charles art teacher)Pollock spent alot of his time babysitting Benton’s young son. The Bentons made Pollock feel like the the family he never had. Pollock soon fell into a deep depression in 1933, because his father died. He was so deppresed that he got drunk one night and began to fight with Elizabeth, Charles wife. During the fight Elizabeth was thretened with a axe. Instead of her getting hurt, Pollock sliced through Charles paintings, which was scheduled for a upcoming public display. Pollock was forced out of Charles house and soon in 1934, Pollock’s other brother Sanford came to New York to help care for him. President Franklin D. Roosevelt started a program called the Public Works of Art Project. Artist were given $24.86 to do 20 hours of work a week. The program had many works of art by Pollock, Jose Clemente Orozco, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko. Jackson Pollock made pictures differently than anyone else before him. He put his canvas on the floor and almost never used a brush. Instead, Pollock would drip paint from knives or sticks or other objects while he carefully moved around the canvas trying to create the right combination of color, pattern, and texture. With this, Pollock helped define the genre of Abstract art and drip painting. Today, Jackson Pollock is one of the most famous artist with a epic story leading to his art waiting to be told! 30 9 KARA WALKER BY BRITNEY P. Kara Walker is an American artist. He was best at his art class and eventually made his first painting at a very young age. When he became an adult, he made over 1,000 pieces of art and became one of the most famous artists in history. PABLO’S LIFE AND ART STYLES Pablo Diego Jose Francisco De Paula Juan Nepomuceno Maria De Los Remedios Cipriano De La Santisima Trinidad Ruiz Y Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25th, 1881 and died on April 8th, 1973 of a heart attack. With his fame he has had more art pieces stolen than anyone else with a record of 1,147, that’s about 5 or 11 times more than any other artist individually. Pablo Picasso’s reason for being an artist is that his father was an artist, and he’s been training to be an artist since he was a child because of his father’s influence. This led up to the 50,000 works 38 of art he created throughout his entire life. (This includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, etc.) Pablo Picasso used many art styles throughout his career, here are some of the more popular styles he used. Cubism is a form of art where the painter uses shapes like squares to make images such as a man, but can be something else in someone else’s point of view. Modern Art has paintings that were made in the last 110 years and has a similarity to cubism in my view. Cubism is a form of art where the painter uses shapes to make images, like a bull. Sculpting is to create something by carving, casting, or shaping one thing into a shape like this goat. You can use wood, soap, maybe metal, marble, limestone, soapstone, etc. Surrealism is a 20thcentury art style that brings the creativity from the tired or unconscious mind. Pablo Picasso’s top ten paintings are: 10.Three Musicians, 9. Girl before a mirror, 8. The old Guitarist, 7. Seated Woman (Marie-Therese) 6. Dora Maar au chat, 5. Blue ****, 4. Le Reve (The Dream), 3. Asleep, 2. **** Green Leaves and Bust, and 1. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. 39 Pablo Picasso’s most expensive paintings were and are: 1. **** Green Leaves and Bust which sold for $106.5 million on May 2010, 2. Picasso made his last painting when he was 91, it was called “The Weeping Woman.” Pablo Picasso died because of a heart attack at the age of 91, but he will always carry the title “The Titan of The 20th century” for the rest of eternity. 40 REFERENCES Wikipedia contributors. Early life Two.........Art career just getting started Three........His materials of art Bibliography This is what drip painting looks like. JACKSON POLLOCK Jackson Paul Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming in the year 1912. He died on August 11, 1956. Jackson Pollock’s parents died a year apart so he was adopted by his next door neighbors at the age of eleven. Jackson Pollock was the youngest of five brothers. He was expelled from 2 high schools for an unknown reason. Jackson Pollock followed in his brothers’ footsteps and went to study art at Thomas Hart Benson Art Institute. Pollock got his art inspiration from the Renaissance. The Renaissance is a period of time in European history at the close of the Middle Ages and the rise of the modern world. Pollock used a kind of paint called alkyd enamel paint. The materials he used to paint were sticks, hardened bushes, and basting syringes. One of Jackson’s major accomplishments in his life is when he got famous for his unique style of drip painting. A drip painting is a unique strategy of art. Jackson used it in all of his paintings known to the public. What I find most interesting about my artist is that he lived the regular life while being famous. In all of the pictures I see of him he is not in a big house. 62 This is a picture of one of Pollock’s famous paintings 63 REFERENCES Wikipedia.com Jackson Pollock.com Wikipedia contributors. He would draw in class and they put him in a room with white walls and just a bench. He said “I like to be in that room.” I think he liked to be in that room so it would help him be a better visual artist so he can imagine what he will paint or draw. Thats about $750 today thats a lot of money. Then his life started to become a success. The girl before mirror was one his paintings, he was a painter and a drawer, his styles were the blue, rose, and African periods. Women were almost always in his painting. They were like a role model in his portraits. His portraits were like deformed and suffering. I feel that he had a ab Then later on in his life he had 8 girlfriends including his 2 wives. He has 4 kids. His kids names are Paloma, Paul, Claude, and Maya Picasso. Picasso signed his first contract in Paris with an art dealer, who agreed to pay him 150 francs per month! 70 18 PABLO PICASSO BY WENDELL Y. Pablo Picasso is a man that created many types of paintings and inspired other artists to make different types of Cubism like Picasso did. Artists may have the same types of Cubism periods that Picasso had during his lifetime. Pablo Picasso also made abstract which he used to make Cubism. Pablo Picasso created Cubism in 1937 when he made his first Cubism painting called the 'Factory, Horta de Ebbo' shown above. ARTIST'S LIFE’S ARTIST LIFE My artist’s name is Pablo Picasso. His full name is Pablo Diego Jose Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Maraa de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santasima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso. He was born in Maglan, Spain on October 25th, 1881, and died April 8th, 1973. Pablo has a father named Jose, a mother named Maria, a sister named Lola Picasso, and another sister named Concepcion Picasso. Jose supported his family by teaching art at a local art school. Pablo was the oldest sibling out of the 3 siblings in his family. Pablo Picasso went to a Local art school called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Once Pablo Picasso’s father, Jose Ruiz Picasso, realized that his son was really great at art, he taught his son Pablo everything he knew about art so he could be a great artist when he turned his father’s age. Pablo Picasso had 6 periods in his life, they were the blue period and the rose period. The blue period is when Pablo Picasso’s best friend named Casagermas took his life in Paris. Casagermas was also a great artist. After the death of Picasso’s best friend, Picasso started to make sad paintings that had the color blue. The rose period is when Pablo meet a girl and he started to paint orange and 72 red cheerful paintings. Pablo became happy and started not to be sad anymore once he found love in his life. The other periods that Pablo Picasso had are the African period, the Analytic cubism period, the cubism, and the Synthetic cubism period. The African period had to do with Pablo’s influence on making African sculptures. One African sculpture that Pablo Picasso made is called the Proto Cubist Les Demoiselles. The cubism periods that Pablo Picasso had have to do with the paintings, sculptures, and many more cubist items that Pablo Picasso created. The Cubism period had got Pablo Picasso into making Cubist art. Finally, Pablo Picasso was a great artist from when he was born, until he died. Pablo Picasso also inspired many people to make paintings using cubism. Cubism is something that’s kind of like abstract, but it uses blocks, cubes, and squares. One of Pablo’s famous cubism paintings is the “Apple Tree” cubism painting. Pablo Picasso made this painting in 1912, he had to get rid of the painting in 1914. Another famous painting that Pablo Picasso created is called Femme en Pleurs that he made in 1937. Pablo Picasso’s cubist period ended in 1915, that means he stopped making cubist paintings, sculptures, and other types of cubist items that Pablo Picasso made. The materials that Pablo Picasso used was Light figures, paintings, sculptures, and cubism. One famous sculpture that Pablo created is called the Guitar, it is made of wood and wires. The form of visual art that Pablo Picasso used is oil paint, crayons, pencils, engraving tools, tools for making ceramics, and sculptures. Pablo Picasso was best known for making cubism because most of his cubism paintings [Such as the Giotto.] are really famous. Two of Pablo’s greatest accomplishments are the development of cubism and the basis of art that is called abstract. Pablo Picasso mostly made many types of cubism art, he also focused more on making cubism instead of other art. 73 This is the Apple Tree painting that Pablo Picasso made in 19121914. Pablo Picasso made this painting when he was either 30 or 31 years old. 74 REFERENCES FOR PABLO PICASSO BY: WENDELL YOUNG JR Picasso, Pablo. "Pablo Picasso cubism." Pablo Picasso cubism. N.p.. Georges Seurat was a famous artist that died young. The type of art that he made was pointillism. Which is art made out of a bunch of dots. He was a good artist. This painting right here is called a Sunday Afternoon in la Grande Jatte. It is one of his most famous paintings. If you go to the Art Institute of Chicago you will see the painting. At a height of 11 x 13 feet big. GEORGES SEURAT Georges Seurat was born in 1859 in Paris, France. His little brother died at age 5. In his life, four of his family members died each in a span of 6 months. I think that that affected his artwork because his artwork probably had to do with sadness or his loss. Georges Seurat most famous painting is Sunday Afternoon in laGrande Jatte. It took 2 years to do it from 1884 to 1886. Georges used to make pointillism. Pointillism is art with a bunch of dots you can’t even see them. Georges Seurat developed pointillism by his theories. Sunday Afternoon in la Grande Jatte is 13 by 11 feet big, and the location is at the art institute of chicago. His last painting was “Le Cirque’’. That was a few months before he died. 78 He died young at age 30 and a ½. It was because of a disease that made his lights extinguish in only a few hours when he was about to triumph. He was traumatized from his loss of his little brother. That also affected Georges Seurat’s death. Even though Georges Seurat’s life was short, he made a lot of famous paintings (about a 100 or more). If I go to the Art Institute of Chicago. And I see the painting Sunday Afternoon in la Grande Jatte. I will get memories of Georges Seurat and how he was a great artist. But sometimes I say to myself why did Georges Seurat die so young? But then sometimes I replied and said probably because there was no cure to that disease/sickness. Man if I existed in the 1800s. I would have died already. At least Seurat got recognition for his work and became famous for it. I think Georges Seurat was added to my idol list. Georges Seurat’s paintings are and were amazing. His painting a Sunday Afternoon in la Grande Jatte was in my mom’s phone when my grandma called. She never knew it was Seurat. In fact she didn’t even know who Georges Seurat was. But know that I told her that he is an artist and painted a sunday afternoon in la grande jatte. So she told me that she liked his artwork. Now my mom knows who Georges Seurat is. I bet his artwork is price less of how good it was and is. That is how Georges Seurat is the best artist of all time. And how he had a tough childhood and early life. 79 References Georges Seurat died in 1891 when he was 30 1/2 years old. He was about to triumph before he died. He had a disease. It was probably kind of big. But he probably died because there was no medicine back then. So i bet that in todays society that the disease could be cured. So basically he could of lived longer. That disease carried him away in a few hours. He was a great pointillism artist. That is my report about Georges Seurat. Seurat , Georges. "Georges Seurat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia."
