Course Title: Microsoft Word Specific Topic: Vocabulary Reading Assignment: A Guide to Microsoft Office 2007 Performance Objectives: After completion of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Understand and use new vocabulary (content‐specific) 2. Be a more independent learner. 3. Students will be able to use the textbook for their benefit. 11‐12.RST.3 Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks; analyze the specific results based on explanations in the text. CCSS Standards: Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; trace the text’s explanation or depiction of a complex process, phenomenon, or concept; provide an accurate summary of the text. Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain‐specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 11–12 texts and topics. Frayer Model Assignment Materials: Microsoft Word textbook
Frayer Model Assignment Procedure: Entire Class: Introduction and Method of activating prior knowledge – Access prior knowledge. Discuss with the class: what type of word processing programs they have used (Open Office, Microsoft Word, Word Pad, Google Docs, etc.). Discuss challenges/obstacles in using those programs. What computer program do you use when you type a paper? Show students an example of a concept explanation (blue section) from the textbook. Explain that there are many words that might be confusing to them. The purpose of the vocabulary activity is to ensure that they are comfortable with commonly used terms so that they can successfully complete their assignments.



Give the students a list of commonly used words with definitions. Give the students Frayer Model handout (http://www.worksheetworks.com/miscellanea/graphic‐organizers/frayer.html) Show an example of how to fill out the handout With a partner or small group:
Make a poster for each of the vocabulary words using the Frayer Model. Entire class: Optional (based on time constraints) Ask groups to present their favorite posters to the group. Post an example of each word around the room. Application of Material: Comprehend instructions and follow them to complete exercises. 
How does knowing vocabulary words impact your understanding of the instructions? Extension Questions:  Choose a word from your list and explain how that word could be used in different contexts? (ex: scroll, row, column, text)
If reading out of the book, the selection could be done with window dressing. (Cut a square into a folder to quiet down the busy pages of the textbook.)
