NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURAL REGION PROJECT

Imagine that you are an anthropologist who has just been given a CAMERA AND a JOURNAL . The camera has the power to transport you back in time to 1607 A. D.!

MY Native American Culture Region is: __________________________________________________________

TWO GOALS:

1.

Using this “CAMERA”, you are going to pretend to go back in time to take a “snapshot” (a photo) of everyday life in ONE of the Native American cultural regions we have been studying in your textbook. 50 points.

2.

In your “JOURNAL” (see p. 2 – Section 2) you are going to write detailed descriptions of your experiences back in time with the Native Americans. 50 points.

The SCENE in your “PHOTOGRAPH” WILL INCLUDE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING required parts: a) The “Photo” must be in COLOR and be no smaller than 7” x 9”. Label it with the name of the INDIAN GROUP or CULTURAL REGION. 3 points. b) The landscape (or climate/geography) we see in your “ photo” must look like the cultural region you chose as described in your book based on the climate, natural resources, etc..

Include at least 3 examples = 9 points. c) The homes/shelters that would have been built by the Native Americans in the cultural region you chose are to be correct. Include at least 2 examples = 8 points. d) The clothing that would have been worn by Native Americans who lived in this cultural region are to be correct. Include at least 2 examples = 8 points. e) The tools that would have been made and used by the Native Americans in the cultural region you chose are to be correct. Include at least 3 examples = 9 points. f) The food that would have been eaten by the Native Americans in the cultural region you chose are to be correct based on the available natural resources in that location. Include at least 3 examples = 9 points. g) Look for photos that include people weaving baskets, making tools, planting or harvesting crops, fishing, hunting, building shelters, etc. 4 points. h) NO CARTOONS OR CLIP ART.

Along with your photograph, YOU ARE GOING TO TYPE A 250 WORD JOURNAL ENTRY that tells the story of your day long adventure. It will describe the scene you have captured with your

“magical” camera in 1607. Describe how things looked and were made. You will use your 5

SENSES to help you describe all the things you would see, touch, taste, feel, and hear during your day in this region. The Journal is worth 50 points for a well written description that includes all of the requirements found in this section – Section 2. a) Make sure you include the name of the Native American Cultural Group in your Journal entry. b) The “JOURNAL” entry DESCRIBES what you saw and experienced in the “PHOTO” you took.

It describes the TOOLS, SHELTERS, CLIMATE, CLOTHING, FOOD, ETC.. c) What was your day like? DESCRIBE all of things you would be able to see, hear, taste, touch, and smell while spending the day in this region (no less than 250 words). d) Remember – you are an “eyewitness” to what life was like for the Native Americans over

400 years ago. What did the air smell like? What did a certain task/job/chore feel like?

What did a certain food taste like? Etc.. e) You are to type your JOURNAL ENTRY using:

 One of these FONTS – Century Gothic or Arial or Times New Roman or Comic Sans.

 This FONT SIZE – 12 (NO LARGER; NO SMALLER).

 *JOURNAL ENTRIES may be hand written but NEATNESS COUNTS.

 You are to use computer images , however, you may choose to hand draw your “photograph” .

o All hand drawn “photos” must:

 Include all that is required as found on the front of this handout.

 Be in color.

 May NOT use stick figures, cartoons, or clip art. Drawing will be judged on ARTISTIC

EFFORT – not artistic ability.

 No “cartoony” type pictures or caricatures.

 NEATNESS COUNTS!
