Boynton Beach Aerospace Science Academy
(BASA) Receives Two Airplanes
winners of written and skill events and the top four winners of the
performance events will compete at the FBLA State Leadership
Conference in Orlando April 5-8.
BASA is the recipient of two airplanes donated for the use of
academy students at Boynton Beach Community High School.
The dedication of the two planes to BASA was held at the Lantana
(KLNA) Airport on Tuesday, February 9.
The newly elected FBLA District 20 officers for next school
year are: President—Ariel Viale from Palm Beach Central High;
Vice President—Amanda Held from West Boca Raton High;
Secretary—Yannelis Gonzalez from Palm Beach Central High, and
Parliamentarian—Jason Gordon from Dwyer High School.
Florida Airmotive Inc. (the Owen Gasaway family) donated a
Cessna 310 to the academy to be used as a display airplane. The
students in the Academy will restore and maintain the airplane
once it arrives on the campus at Boynton Beach Community
High School. The second plane, a Light Sport Maxis, was donated
in memory of Jeffrey R. Pastl (1972-1990) by Richard Kull. As his
mother Doris Pastl, owner of Specialty Advertising explained,
Jeffrey was a graduate of Congress Middle School and Santaluces
High School. He was a member of the schools’ bands and played
the tuba. Once he graduated from Santaluces, he joined the
United States Air Force so he could work on jet engines and earn
a college degree. At the age of 18 years old, three days after he
arrived in California to train for Desert Storm, Jeffrey was killed in
a car crash. This plane was donated in his honor to reflect his love
for the country and the US Air Force. The plane will be used to
train students in maintenance and flight.
The BASA students and staff are extremely grateful to both
families for their support of the Academy.
FBLA District 20 Competitions
Future Business Leaders of America
(FBLA) District 20 with over 1,900
members held their written and skill
competitions the week of January
11 with the performance events
being held on January 20 at Palm
Bach Central High School. Over one
thousand middle and high school students competed in fifty plus
business related events. FBLA is an integral part of the Business
Education curriculum and kudos to the students and their advisers
that are involved with this outstanding student organization. The
following schools had members that competed:
• Middle Schools- Carver, Duncan, Independence, Jupiter, Polo
Park, and Woodlands.
• High Schools- John I. Leonard , LakeWorth, Olympic Heights, Palm
Beach Central, Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach Lakes, Park
Vista, Royal Palm Beach, Santaluces, West Boca Raton, and

Suncoast High’s Annual Career Showcase
Dr. Linda Cartlidge, Suncoast’s Principal, started this program last
year to encourage students to identify a ‘career’ choice they are
interested in pursuing both academically and professionally.
The Career Showcase is a unique opportunity
for the students to meet professionals in
their career path. The students are prepared
in advance by their teachers to maximize
their time and equip them to interview
the presenters. They are ready to ask the
right questions to get an idea of what their
future career choice is really like first-hand.
This is an opportunity for the students to know what it will take
both academically and professionally to achieve their dreamed of
position and what a typical day would be like. This program is so
valuable! The students report a renewed excitement in pursuing
their goals.
Suncoast also had students who’ve realized that they may need
to re-evaluate what they’d like to do in the future. This is also a
great networking opportunity to make ‘matches’ for internships,
part-time, summer and full-time jobs for our students and future
employers.
Criminal Justice Student Receives Highest Rank
Congratulations to Major Regine Celestin.
Major Celestin has been a member of
the Criminal Justice Academy at Atlantic
High School since 9th grade. She is
the only student in the history of the
Criminal Justice Academy to earn this
rank. Major Celestin is the right hand to
Sgt. Jeff Rasor, the academy’s instructor, and takes pride in being
responsible for over 250 other members of the academy. Now a
senior, Major Celestin plans to work as a Community Service Officer
with the Delray Beach Police Department while she attends college
next year. Major Celestin will pursue a degree in Criminal Justice
and has aspirations of one day returning to Atlantic High School to
become the Criminal Justice Academy instructor.

Annual Groundhog Shadowing Day
Park Vista High School’s 3rd Annual Auto Show
On February 4, 2010, approximately 200 students in the Palm Beach
Gardens Community High School Five Star Magnet Program will
spend the day shadowing local businesses to learn more about
professions of interest. This annual event, known as Groundhog
Shadowing Day, is a tradition accomplished in conjunction with
Junior Achievement. We need the help of local businesses to make
this happen! Any business located in the north, central, or western
areas of Palm Beach County interested in hosting one or more
students should contact Ava Pence at (561) 694-7388.
On December 12, 2009, Park Vista Community High School held its
3rd Annual Auto Show. Approximately 200 vehicles were exhibited
while many students, parents and community members attended
the event. Antique, classic, and custom cars and trucks delighted
automotive enthusiasts. Twenty-six trophies in various categories
were awarded to participants.
Palm Beach Gardens Community High School is a B-rated Title I
school with approximately 2500 students. Over 800 students are
serviced in the career academy, which provides studies in Medical
Sciences, Global Business and Entrepreneurship, Tourism, Hospitality,
and Resort Management, Sports Management and Recreation, and
Television, Radio, and Film Production Technology.
West Boca Raton Students Touch Hearts
West Boca Raton High School’s Drafting
and Design Academy students partnered
with Operation Home Front and Bank of
America to design and create Valentine’s
Day postcards that are being sent to military
troops serving our country.
Hearts from the Homefront, the reach out effort from the South
Florida Fair in West Palm Beach, FL, was a resounding success.
Volunteers from Operation Homefront and associates from Bank
of America collected 2,100 Valentines for our troops signed by
fair attendees from ages 5 to 94 that wanted to thank soldiers for
their service and sacrifice while they were away from their families
and loved ones. The Valentines were created for the fair event, and
were designed and printed by students from West Boca Raton
High School’s Communications Technology class, and incorporated
Patriotic and South Florida elements in the Valentine Card designs.
Instructor John Steranko said, “The students were overwhelmed
with excitement to be asked to produce the card for this event,
especially when they found out the cards were actually being sent
directly to the soldiers.”
Under the instruction of Mr. Steranko, students Jesse Mahler, Alex
Prinzi and Karene Mordechai designed the postcards which will be
sent directly to the dedicated troops serving our country.
“We knew we had a good idea, and we were looking for a way to
allow anyone who wanted to share their pride in our brave troops
to show it. The fair gave us access to over 500,000 attendees, most
of them from right here in our own neighborhoods. Sandi Meredith,
Market Leader for Bank of America in North Palm Beach, stated,
“With the support of West Boca Raton Community High School and
Instructor John Steranko, this vision became a reality.”
Proceeds from the auto show go toward equipment, scholarships
and other important items that will enable the Academy to stay
current with cutting-edge technology.
Tours of our Automotive Repair and
Automotive Body facilities were given,
music was provided by one of our
Automotive Academy Instructors Joe
Verdicchio, and Fort Lauderdale Harley
Davidson Drill Team provided a spectacular exhibition. In addition,
participants and spectators donated blood at a mobile collection
vehicle. To cap off the day, the Frictionator, a Ford F650 pickup
truck, showed everyone what a jet engine can do when attached
to a truck!
By offering the annual auto show, Park Vista can showcase the
exceptional facilities and offerings that are available to prospective
students. In addition, the auto show enables us to show
community members and business partners that we appreciate
and need their assistance in numerous ways including: advisory
committee members; volunteers, business contributors to share
their real-world expertise and much more. With businesses and
the communities ideas and guidance, the Park Vista Auto Academy
can offer the very best curriculum so graduates are well-rounded
individuals who are prepared for life after high school. Park Vista’s
instructors, Steven Moldoff, Tom Knott, Norm Thomas and Joseph
Verdicchio are congratulated on a great auto show and hope to see
you at the auto show next year.
NAF Tri-County Advisory Board
The first NAF (National Academy Foundation) Tri-County retreat
was held in February. NAF directors, teachers, district personnel
from Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade school districts along with
business partners from these counties meet with the purpose of
creating a Tri-County Advisory Board.
JD Hoye, president of NAF, welcomed everyone and gave a report
on her meeting with the State DOE and how national and local
business partnerships will be critical to the future of the education
system. Connie Scotchel-Gross, Career Education manager, was
part of a panel in which each county gave an update on Career
Education policies in their district. Committees were then formed
to work on the following concerns: 1) Communications and
Marketing, 2) Corporate Engagement, and 3) Best Practices.

Lantana Middle School Teacher Honored By
Radio Club of America
Lantana Middle School technology teacher
Bob Pauley received the Dwyer Award for
Excellence in Education in 2006 for creating
his own website featuring “The Classroom
of Tomorrow.” His state-of-the-art computer
lab features a full line of Apple and Dell
computers with lesson plans ranging from
computer applications to web design. This
month Pauley was honored by the Radio Club of America, a 100-year
old organization specializing in wireless technology since the days of
long distance ham radio transmissions a century ago.
The honor from the Radio Club of America in its 100th year included
an initial grant of $500 to Mr. Pauley for much needed lab supplies.
RCA continues to support LCMS and other schools across the country
as they recognize and appreciate the work teachers and students
are doing in this growing field. Mr. Pauley’s students explore and
discover the excitement of wireless technology from its early days of
telegraphy and ham operators through and into all the future holds.
Our students have a head start as their knowledge increases in this
remarkable century-old and yet up-to-the-minute technology.
DECA District Competition
In December DECA high school members from Forest Hill, Jupiter,
Royal Palm Beach, South Tech, Spanish River, and Wellington began
their pursuit of competitive recognition. On December 9 and 10,
over six hundred high school students took a written test in their
competitive area. The testing this year changed to five tests combining
like areas into the core area of business for 23 competitive events.
These core areas are finance, hospitality, business administration and
marketing.
On the evening of December 10, the DECA advisors gathered to run
the test scores which determined the district competition qualifiers.
In each individual competition, the top 15 scorers qualify; and in the
team competitions, the top ten teams qualify.
At Northwood University in West Palm Beach on January 15, about
300 students spent the day trying to keep their competitive dreams
going. Judges from all over the county and from every aspect of
business helped determine who would be the district winners
through role play, interviews, and watching oral presentations. All
students in attendance were recognized for their accomplishments;
students not receiving top five trophies were given medallions.
In addition to the district qualifiers in attendance at Northwood
University, the newest district DECA chapters from Boca Raton High
and Martin County High came to observe this event.
All competitors are anxiously preparing and awaiting their
opportunity to show state judges that they deserve to continue on to

Army JROTC Cadets Showcase Skills
On Saturday, February 27, the W.T. Dwyer Panther Battalion hosted
the Palm Beach County District Army JROTC Drill Meet. The meet
took place on and around the football field at the high school with
various events, inspections and competitions throughout the day,
and an awards ceremony wrapping things up in the afternoon.
Over 100 cadets representing JROTC teams from Dwyer, Atlantic,
Jupiter, South Fork, and Seminole Ridge High Schools competed in
a variety of categories including armed and unarmed squad, color
guard, individual exhibition, and knock out events to name a few.
“This was my first Army JROTC drill meet and I must say I was quite
impressed with the organization of the event and the leadership
qualities that were demonstrated by the competing cadets. The
time and effort that all of the Army Instructors put into these
programs was definitely evident in the performances by the cadets,”
says District JROTC Curriculum Specialist Dr. Jeraline M. Marsh.
This was a preparatory step for all the cadets. Next stop, the
Regional Drill Meet to be hosted by Jupiter High School’s Army

Florida Educators of America (FFEA) students from the Early Childhood
and Teacher Education Program who took first place at the Chapter
PowerPoint Competition High School Division at the FFEA’s State
Conference. The thirty-two student members, along with educator,
Marcia Brixius and parent volunteer, Irene LaTour, traveled to Orlando
for an action-packed weekend where the students attended breakout
sessions and heard famous motivational speakers. The students are
very proud of their first win!
Lake Worth Community High School has given the first EKG
(electrocardiogram) certification exams to 24 students. Of the 24
students who took the industry certification, 18 have successfully
passed, demonstrating a 75% passing rate. These students were
certified by the National Healthcareer Association. In addition
to adding to their credentials, passing this industry certification
allows them to work as a Certified EKG Technician (CET).
Congratulations goes out to Dr. Jairo Garcia, of the medical
sciences academy at Lake Worth Community High School. Dr.
Garcia has achieved extra certification currently enabling him
to teach dual enrollment classes. The coupling with Palm
Beach Community College is also a benefit to LWCHS students.

Physiology, getting high school and college credit for that course.
The A & P course will be offered both at LWCHS and on Mondays
and Wednesdays from 3:33-4:40 PM at PBCC Central Campus.
Lake Worth Community High School was honored to welcome
Professor Dr. Erin Celso from University of Florida onto its campus.
Dr. Celso shared her knowledge of protein chain reaction and
gelelectrophoresis with Lake Worth High School’s pre-medicine
Medical Academy students while instructing the students in a lab
