Student Life - Where You Belong Each September we hold a welcome back assembly. Student leaders take the stage to introduce students to our array of clubs and sports activities. We offer many clubs, including arts, drama, poetry, library, rainbow, recycling, music and fitness. Or join Greenpeace, South Asian and Vietnamese Associations, power cheerleading, math and outdoor adventure club. Our school is an active member of the community. Our student leaders and staff organize such events as the Earth Day Community Clean-up event, the 30 Hour Famine and other fundraising initiatives. Students appreciate the many mentoring opportunities we offer, including orientation for new Grade 9 students, peer counselors, peer tutors, mediators and teacher advisors. Our students are enthusiastic about their participation in ESP and Volunteer Now. Students are invited to join or cheer on our sports teams, including badminton, hockey, baseball, volleyball, rugby, skiing, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, golf, football, cricket and track and field. Our music students produce a yearly music CD, and our school is equally proud of its traditional yearbook and its video yearbook. We have both a student newspaper and a literary magazine. No day at York Memorial is complete without “Radio Memo.” Each year our students and staff plan international trips. Our students traveled to New York this past year. Next year we will visit Italy. RUSH students demonstrate aboveaverage intellectual curiosity and excellent academic skills, but are not identified as gifted students. Our RUSH Program offers Four areas of focus: Mathematics, Computers, Sciences, Business; Humanities; The Arts; and Cognitive Studies- Youth Neurostudies. Our major advantage is that we do not lock you into a specific area of focus. You are free to participate in all three areas of study, rather than concentrating on just one focus area. Starting in Grade 9, RUSH students study in our PreAdvanced Placement Program, advancing to full Advanced Placement (AP) studies in Grade 12. Students in the RUSH and other programs take full advantage of this vast array of subject choices to culminate their high school education with a broad academic preparation so essential when applying to postsecondary programs. The Humanities offers great preparation to university bound students seeking admission in professional faculties such as Law, Business and Economics and, programs in the field of Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. The Arts - If you are interested in the arts, we offer a wide range of courses in music, drama, dance and the visual arts. Admission into our arts program requires no auditions. You will enjoy classes in our studios as well as performances in one of the TDSB’s most historical auditorium. You will have many opportunities to perform: we produce four major shows a year for dance and music and we host art exhibitions featuring our visual arts students. Our students collaborate with our partners, the Kiwanis Music Festival, dance and theatre companies. Our band also brings recognition to York Memorial in competitions and at international events. Mathematics, Computers and Sciences - Our RUSH program offers a unique program in mathematics, computers and science. As a result of our computer technology migration initiative, all York Memorial students have personal hard drive space for their files, as well as personal log-ins and passwords to protect their information.
