April marks the start of International Week from April 1 – April 5. Students and faculty will celebrate our diverse school and world by dressing in costumes from around the world, participating in culturally diverse dances, music, and activities, and feasting at our International Food Faire sponsored by our clubs on Friday. Upon return from Spring Break, freshmen, sophomore, and juniors will be taking the CST’s (California Standards Tests) in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies courses. Testing will be completed within the regular school day with their regular teachers in familiar classrooms so that students can MAKE IT COUNT! Classes will start at the usual 8:00 am and end at the usual 2:25 pm. The only change is that some days the study hall minutes will be added to existing periods to accommodate the longer tests. Additionally, there will be a student run production of the popular children’s book, Phantom Toll Booth starting April 20. Be sure to bring the family to this entertaining play. Please check for specific deadlines! For example, San Jose State University requires placement The California State University system­ wide placement testing program in basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills consist of the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) examination. You may be required to take one or both of these tests. To attain the best possible schedule for the semester, take the placement test as soon as possible. Enrollment during orientation is dependent on the timely receipt of scores by the campus. Junior Class Visits: Guidance advisors will visit with Juniors on Monday, April 1st and Tuesday, April 2nd to present and review important information about post­ high school planning. WACAC COLLEGE FAIR being held at Mission College is Thursday, April 18 th from 6:00pm­8:00pm. Over 150 college representatives will be available to answer questions and pass out college literature. Parents and students are encouraged to attend the evening session! Encourage your 11 th grader to continue his/her college search by attending this informative college fair at Mission College. SAT & ACT COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS – California State University (CSU) & University of California (UC) Any students planning to take the SAT or ACT in April, May or in June should register immediately (www.collegeboard.com or www.actstudent.org). Official test scores are sent by the testing agency – CollegeBoard or ACT. Class of 2015 – Sophomores CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) was administered to 10 th grade students March 12 th and 13 th . All students must pass the CAHSEE as part of their graduation requirements to earn a diploma. Students who do not pass the CAHSEE may be placed in a workshop class next year. Your son/daughter will have another opportunity to take the CAHSEE their Junior year. Results for this exam will be mailed home in May. Q & A Session for 8 th grade Parents
4 SPRING PROGRAMMING for 2013­2014 The Guidance Advisors visited with Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors in January and February to discuss scheduling options for next year. Students received information on graduation requirements, college entrance requirements and course offerings for the 2013­2014 school year. Students & parents/guardians will receive a program verification letter spring semester. Students have until April 26, 2013 to make any changes. Prior to April 26 th , students can make changes to their list of courses at any given time either via loopmail or by visiting with his/her guidance advisor in the Student Services Center. The deadline for requesting class changes for your student’s 2013­2014 class schedule is Friday, April 26, 2013.
