Second criminal trial
reset for Frederiksen
DENNIS MAGEE
dennis.magee@wcfcourier.com
CHARLES CITY — A second criminal case against
Casey Frederiksen will be
delayed.
Authorities in September 2012 charged Frederiksen with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual
abuse in Floyd County. His
arrest is linked to the death
of 5-year-old Evelyn Miller in July
2005.
At the
time of
his arrest
Frederiksen was
already
in federal
Casey
prison for
Frederiksen possessing
child pornography and for a drugrelated conviction. He
was brought back to Iowa
from the U.S. Penitentiary in Marion, Ill., and ultimately held in the Bremer
County Jail.
While in the Bremer
County Jail, Frederiksen
allegedly put a choke hold
on another inmate, Kyle
Hoins. According to court
documents, Frederiksen
choked Hoins “causing
him to lose consciousness
and causing him pain.”
Bremer County Assistant Attorney Jill Dashner charged Frederiksen
with assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor. According to
Dashner, Hoins, 22, and
Frederiksen, 35, got into
an argument Oct. 23 over
the remote control for a
television in the Bremer
County Jail.
The case was scheduled
to go to trial last week, but
the court allowed a continuance. Judge Peter Newell
set a new trial date of Sept.
4 in Bremer County.
Frederiksen also was
scheduled to go on trial for
the murder and sex abuse
charges Sept. 15 in Hamilton County. His defense
attorney, Aaron Hawbaker of Waterloo, asked
Judge Gregg Rosenbladt to
suppress evidence about
Frederiksen’s alleged collection of child pornography.
Hawbaker also asked for
more time to prepare for
expert testimony. Prosecutors Scott Brown and Doug
Hammerand recently added Dr. Resmiye Oral to their
list of potential witnesses.
Oral is a pediatrician and
child abuse expert at the
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
A hearing on the child
pornography evidence
and to set a new trial date
is scheduled for 9 a.m.
Sept. 16 at the Cerro Gordo County Law Enforcement Center in Mason
City.
The murder trial will
be held in Webster City
in Hamilton County. The
court granted a change of
venue from Floyd County because of anticipated
problems seating an impartial jury.
Frederiksen is being held
in the Hardin County Jail.
He is not scheduled for
release from federal prison
until Nov. 5, 2026.
Vehicular homicide trial

class B felony, in the death
of Jesse Wilson, 22, Charles
City.
Patrick was released on
$25,000 bond in March.
He was arrested again May
20 and charged with possession of contraband in a
correctional institution and
driving while his license
was denied or revoked.
He was jailed until he
posted $25,000 cash bond
last week, according to online court records.
Patrick was set to stand
trial Aug. 20, but the proceedings have been continued to Oct. 29 in Mitchell County District Court.
According to the Iowa
State Patrol, Patrick was
traveling on Hickory Avenue north of Iowa Highway
9 in Mitchell County when
he lost control of his vehicle. It rolled several times.
Five people were injured in
the crash.
