Getting out of bed is a little more difficult. There is less spring in our steps. We don’t feel excited about the endeavors of which we are a part. We are just emotionally and spiritually tired. St. Paul had such moments of weariness. And he would look for other people to come into Refreshments his life and encourage him, sometimes just by being with him for a bit. He uses a wonderful word to speak about their impact on him. He says they have refreshed him. Paul and Timothy write to Philemon: “I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother”(Phm 1:7). Paul shares with the Corinthians about a visit from friends: “I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit…” (1 Cor 16:1718). He writes to the Romans that he hopes by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company (Rom 15:32). It is amazing what a contact from a friend can do. An old friend drops by the house on the way to work.A buddy calls just to say he was thinking of you. A coworker shows up to sit in your office just to say, “one of the reasons I like to come to work is to hang out with you.” A partner in ministry sends you an email to say, “didn’t we have a good time on that project?” All of these simply refresh us a little bit. They don’t bring major renovation, or a whole new lease on life. But they refresh us. They splash a little cold water on our faces, and give us the energy to live in joy one more day. KIDS HOPE USA goes to Barnes and Noble Perhaps you could have a refreshment ministry. Give it a whirl. Awaken Embrace Continued from Cover KIDS HOPE USA goes to Barnes & Noble and meets a special friend Ninety-two KIDS HOPE USA students from Bri- armeadow and Sutton Elementary Schools celebrated the end of the school year with a field trip to Barnes & Noble. For many of the Kindergarten-5th graders, this was their first visit to a bookstore, which included a tour and story time. As a highlight of the trip, each student was given his or her own selection of books to take home and read during the summer. The books were a gift from Mary Sherwood, a very special friend of KIDS HOPE and St. Luke’s. Mary also presented each of the older students with a Gazetteer dictionary. 2 tant skill any of us ever has; and it is a great joy for me to have the opportunity to encourage reading excellence in young children, while we all have fun.” If you are interested in mentoring a child for the 201213 school year, or would like to know more, please contact Marci Pampe at mpampe@stlukesmethodist. org or Karen McCarver at kmccarver@stlukesmethodist.org Move Outreach reaching out to our community and the world Opportunities to Serve: During our summer study of The Twelve, we will be suggesting ways each week you might respond to God’s call to apostleship. Opportunities will be available all summer. Find them Sunday mornings in the worship bulletins or at StLukesMethodist.org/summer. DO IT AT HOME* The seeds of this wonderful day were sown over a year ago; when Mary contacted St. Luke’s looking for a way to help supply summer reading materials to financially challenged children. She had read a study showing that students who were provided with 12 age-appropriate books over the summer scored significantly higher in reading achievement than the non-readers. Spurred by these findings, Mary gave all our KIDS HOPE students books last year, and this year she repeated her generosity. Mary Sherwood’s gift, paired with the Barnes & Noble invitation to visit has created an excitement about reading in a group of children that may have otherwise not had that opportunity.
