Conics Art Project Requirements: You will create an original work of art that can be represented completely by equations of lines and conic sections. The artwork must be in color and you may use any medium you would like. Your picture must include at least the following numbers of each conic section. a. 4 ellipses (at least two of them with centers not at the origin) b. 2 hyperbolas (at least one of them with a center not at the origin) c. 2 circles (at least one of them with a center not at the origin) d. 10 lines (at least five of them at angles other than vertical or horizontal) e. 2 parabolas Your project must include the following sections: 1. Artwork on 8.5” x 11” piece of paper • Must be neatly drawn and hand colored using medium of choice • Shading and use of color combinations will be evaluated 2. You must include a detailed graph with each line and conic clearly labeled on graph paper. Make sure to label scale neatly and completely and clearly identify the x and yaxis. Also label key points like centers and vertices and points used to calculate a values on parabolas and b values on hyperbolas. Each separate part will be numbered and each number highlighted and color coded by conic type. Do not include anything else on this page. It must be neat, accurate and easy to read. 3. You must include an additional section with all of the equations of the lines and conics. Do not type this section unless you use an equation editor. a. You must write the equations in (h, k) form and organize your work in sections by conic type. b. You must include the restricted domain OR range in some very special cases (ie. vertical lines). c. You must show all work leading to each equation neatly and in an organized manner. At a minimum, be sure you have work shown for a values on parabolas and b values on hyperbolas. This project will be evaluated using the following criteria: Completion of the steps outlined Creativity, color and use of basic art principles and color theory Neatness and organization Degree of difficulty Accuracy of the mathematics used in each equation and in the domain and range. Conics Art Project Rubric Please include this as the last page of your project packet Per ______ Accuracy of Mathematics All equations accurate. Work shown neatly for calculating “b” values on each hyperbola, y- intercepts for all lines(vertical and horizontal lines excluded), and a values for all parabolas All domains correctly stated Minimum requirements met: 4 Ellipses,2 Hyperbolas, 2 Circles, 10 Lines, 2 Parabolas. All sections included. Creativity Must achieve a 50/50 positive/negative space and an appealing artistic balance (symmetrical or asymmetrical). Coloring techniques must use basic color theory. Overall neatness and organization Proper formatting for equations section. All work neatly shown next to each equation. No stray marks folds, tears, visible erasures on graphs. Shapes neatly drawn. Degree of Difficulty Restricted domain shapes over and above the minimum requirements. Domain statements for partial circles or ellipses stated correctly.
