College Algebra Conics Art Extra Credit Project 1st Semester 2015-2016 Requirements You will create an original work of art that can be represented completely by equations of lines and conic sections. The artwork must be in color, but you may use any medium you like. Your picture MUST include at least the following numbers of each conic section: A.) 2 lines or line segments (at least 1 that is NOT vertical nor horizontal) B.) 2 circles (at least 1 with center NOT at the origin) C.) 2 parabolas (at least 1 with vertex NOT at the origin) D.) 2 ellipses (at least 1 with center NOT at the origin) E.) 2 hyperbolas (at least 1 with center NOT at the origin) Process Your project must include the following three sections: Artwork on 8.5” x 11” piece of paper. o Must be neatly drawn and colored. o Shading and use of color combinations will be evaluated. Detailed graph on a separate sheet of graph paper. o Clearly number each line and conic using letters above. label lines: A1, A2; circles: B1, B2; parabolas: C1, C2, etc. o Label scale neatly and completely and clearly identify the x and y-axes. you must use only one set of axes o Label key points like centers, vertices, and foci (foci for parabolas only). o Do not include anything else on this page. It must be neat, accurate and easy to read. Equations on a separate sheet(s) of paper. o You must write your equations in standard form and organize your work by section letters above (A. lines, B. circles, etc.). o You must show all work leading to each equation neatly and in an organized manner. Evaluation The project will be evaluated using the following criteria: Completion of steps outlined. Creativity and use of color. Neatness and organization. Degree of difficulty. Accuracy of the mathematics used in each equation. Due Date: This must be turned in no later than Friday, December 18th, 3pm. Please turn in this sheet with your project.
