Eastleigh Operatic & Musical Society presents The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, adapted by Frank Gabrielson, with Music and Lyrics of the MGM motion picture score by Harold Arlen & E.Y.Harburg An amateur production, by arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York and with music and dialogue material supplied by MusicScope, 75 Furnival Street, Crewe, Cheshire CW2 7LH, England. Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th May 2015 Director Musical Director Choreographer President Vice President Chairman Secretary Treasurer Keith Wiggans Shaun Dodimead Louise Hodson Godfrey Olson OBE Roy Yeates JP Adrian Tatnall Sue Chamberlain Adrian Tatnall Committee members Pat O’Rourke, Lizz Spencer, Sue Tatnall, Janet Green, Carole Lilly, Amanda Dempster, Wendy Smith, Richard Chamberlain Eastleigh Operatic and Musical Society (registered charity No 1095271) is affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) Welcome to The Wizard of Oz A message from our Chairman… It is nearly 16 years since we last performed The Wizard of Oz in 1999. It was the members playing the Tinman, Scarecrow and Dorothy from that 1999 production that went on to become the founding members of EOMS junior society, now known as Footlights Youth Theatre, which has become a leading youth group in the area. Despite many changes to the main society and the passage of time it is nice to see some continuity and there are 5 performers in the current show who appeared in the 1999 production, with 3 of them playing the same principal parts. It is also very good to have David Freemantle as stage manager for this show just as we did in 1999. This show has not been without its problems and in particular we are very grateful to Keith Wiggans for agreeing to step in as the director at short notice after our original director fell ill. Our problems, however, have been nothing compared with the famous original film which saw half the cast being injured and required 5 directors and 3210 costumes. Even Toto the dog had to have a stand-in when a guard stepped on him accidentally and broke his leg. I can reassure you that no animals have been harmed in the making of our show! We are grateful to have the services of Shaun Dodimead as Musical Director. This is Shaun’s first time as our musical director although he is a regular EOMS performer and he won a curtain call award for best actor in our production of Ruddigore last year. The story of The Wizard of Oz has often been given a number of religious, political and feminist interpretations but I suggest you have a break from politics and just enjoy this musical for its colourful characters, uplifting story and memorable music. Adrian Tatnall Chairman Eastleigh Operatic and Musical Society Introducing Eastleigh Operatic & Musical Society Originally known as Eastleigh Orchestral and Operatic Society, we performed our first show, The Mikado, in 1937 at Eastleigh Town Hall, where we continue to stage our twice-yearly productions. Long-serving or retired members remember the conditions at the old Town Hall – under-stage dressing rooms accessed by steep wooden stairs, two or three bare light bulbs, and the cast had to provide their own mirrors! This is a far cry from the excellent modern facilities we now enjoy at The Point. EOMS had the privilege of being the first major group to perform here after the extensive conversion in 1997. Our two senior productions take place in May and November. We rehearse throughout the year, with a break in the summer. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the community centre in Hoddinott Road, Eastleigh. We also have a very successful junior section Footlights Youth Theatre - for young people from the age of 8 to 18. We are a lively and friendly community group and new members of all ages are welcome, whether you would like to join the Society as a chorus member, a potential principal, to help back stage or front of house or even produce, direct, or play the piano at rehearsals! EOMS next show will be Guys and Dolls, directed by Steven Lilly and with musical direction by Nigel Finch. The show runs from November 24th to 28th 2015 at The Point, Eastleigh. New members are welcome! The cast of EOMS production “I Love Musicals”, November 2014 Patrons We are indebted to our patrons who continue to support their local theatre. Mr Brian Lamerton Mr Stuart Munden Mr Godfrey G Olson, OBE Mrs Wendy Southwell Mr Philip Spearey Mr John Tomkins Mr S Walters Miss Angela Winteridge To become a patron for a year beginning on 1 January costs only £40. This entitles the patron to two free tickets at each of the two shows staged by the adult section of the society in that year, and two free programmes at each. This represents good value for regular theatregoers and provides ongoing support for this local community theatre group. It is based on the novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, with a script adapted by Frank Gabrielson. It uses most of the songs written by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg for the classic 1939 MGM film starring Judy Garland. The Wizard of Oz was actually first turned into a musical much earlier by L. Frank Baum himself. His musical was a loose adaptation of the novel, with three Acts: “The Storm”, “The Emerald City” and “Glinda’s Palace”. It first played in Chicago in 1902 and was a success on Broadway the following year. The Royal Shakespeare Company adapted the film's screenplay and produced a new version at London's Barbican Centre in 1987. Yet another adaptation with new songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice opened in London in 2011. The role of Dorothy was cast through the reality television show “Over the Rainbow”, the winner Danielle Hope appearing with Michael Crawford as the Wizard. Director's notes Keith is no stranger to the role of Director, his most recent EOMS venture being Scrooge. Having taken over part way through rehearsals has proved to be 'interesting' as Keith wanted to remain true to the original feel of the piece but at the same time wishing to put his own stamp on the production. He says, "The Wizard of Oz is one of the trickier shows to put on stage because of people's love of the Judy Garland perennial film. Each Christmas we are treated to the magical story and well-loved characters; so how to make it ours? Our production of the original MUNY stage version differs from the film in many ways but it still contains all the very recognisable elements and with enough differences to make it fresh, funny and just a little bit frightening!” “You will meet Dorothy (not Judy Garland), good and bad Witches, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion and Wizard, as well as the Munchkins (and who said they had to be under 4 feet tall?) and our hope is to offer a lively show which will make you cry, laugh, jump and Boo! So join us on our journey Over the Rainbow and along the Yellow Brick Road from Kansas, through Munchkinland, to the Emerald City and back again." Dorothy meets the Cowardly Lion, from the first edition of the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum. Synopsis Act I A teenage girl, Dorothy, lives on a farm in Kansas with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em dreaming of faraway places ("Over the Rainbow"). One day the farmhouse, with Dorothy inside, is swept off by a tornado to Munchkin land in the Land of Oz. The falling house kills the cruel ruler of the Munchkins, the Wicked Witch of the East. The Munchkins and the Sorceress of the North greet Dorothy ("Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead" and "Munchkinland"). The Sorceress tells Dorothy that she will have to go to the Emerald City to ask the great Wizard of Oz to help her return home. The Wicked Witch of the West, sister of the late Wicked Witch of the East, vows revenge upon Dorothy. Dorothy meets the Scarecrow and the Tin Man. The Scarecrow wants a brain, and the Tin Man needs a heart ("If I Only Had a Brain" and "If I Only Had a Heart"). Dorothy suggests that the Wizard can help them too ("We're Off to See the Wizard"). They then meet the Cowardly Lion ("If I Only Had the Nerve"). The four friends travel down the yellow brick road, having been warned of the lions, tigers, bears and the fantastical jitterbugs controlled by the Wicked Witch. When the jitterbugs attack, Dorothy appeals to the Sorceress of the North, who freezes the jitterbugs ("The Jitterbug"). Act II The friends finally reach the Emerald City, where they meet Lord Growlie, his daughter Gloria and the Courtiers of Oz. Lord Growlie warns that if someone bothers the Wizard with a foolish request, he may destroy them. After a tour ("The Merry Old Land of Oz" and "Evening Star"), the friends meet the Wizard. He is very frightening and says that, before he will help them, they must kill the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy and her new friends travel to the castle of the Wicked Witch where the Witch eventually captures Dorothy. Her friends rush to try to save her. The Witch intends to shrink Dorothy and her friends with a magic potion in her cauldron. Thinking fast, Dorothy pushes the Witch into the cauldron. The water shrinks the Wicked Witch away to nothing ("Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead" - reprise). The friends return to the Emerald City. The Wizard gives the Scarecrow a diploma, the Tin Man a watch and the Cowardly Lion a medal of courage, and convinces them that these gifts solve their various problems. Finally he helps Dorothy get home by giving her a lift in his new rocket ship. Wizard of Oz - Musical numbers Act I “Over The Rainbow” ………….………….…..…….. Marc Whittingham Keith Wiggans – Director/Cowardly Lion Keith is a long standing member of EOMS who joined us for Showboat in 1978 and who has appeared on stage, taken the Director's role, designed scenery and worked with the stage crew, all of which he says have given him a real buzz. His most recent appearance with EOMS was in our concert and before that he was Old Adam in Ruddigore. Keith loves comedy parts, having grown out of Romantic Leads many years ago, and so finds the Lion extremely satisfying, even if the costume is a little on the warm side! Keith took the same role in our previous production of the Wizard of Oz but promises it will not be a straight repeat of characterisation especially as his last Lion's voice gave him a sore throat! Shaun Dodimead – Musical Director Shaun has come full circle since his first appearance with EOMS in the title role for Orpheus in the Underworld, a performance memorable for his enthusiastic but mercifully tacet violin playing. Since then he has performed with societies all over the area, but returned to EOMS to win the Daily Echo Curtain Call Award for Best Performance in an Opera for his portrayal of Robin Oakapple in our production of Ruddigore. Somehow last year he also found time to become a father. Now he is back in the underworld of the orchestra pit taking on a new challenge as Musical Director. Louise Hodson – Choreographer Louise has been dancing for a very long time, dance music and the theatre have always been a part of her life. Louise has choreographed for many local societies as well as being resident choreographer for Footlights Youth Theatre for 10 years. Louise has worked with EOMS before for Merry Widow in 2007. She has loved working with the EOMS team again and wishes the cast all the best for a great show week. Rosie Mellett – Dorothy Rosie is 14 years old and a student at Cantell school. She is thrilled to be working with EOMS again after "I Love Musicals". She is also a member of Footlights Youth Theatre and her past parts include Annie in "Annie" and Louisa in "The Sound of Music". In her free time she enjoys playing the guitar and piano as well as singing and composing. She has loved every minute of working with the EOMS team and is delighted to be a part of another amazing show. Tom Harrison - Scarecrow Tom is a newer member of EMOS having joined late for "I Love Musicals". He works as a hotel food and beverage manager in Hook and has always enjoyed performing. While studying Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Portsmouth he performed at the Kings Theatre and New Theatre Royal in The Mikado as the Mikado, Frank in Die Fledermaus, Tevye in Fiddler, the Duke of Plaza Toro in The Gondoliers and as Judd Fry and Will Parker in Oklahoma - in separate shows! He feels very welcomed by all at EOMS and looks forward to staying with the society. He hopes not to prat fall too hard and land in the orchestra pit! Matt Chapman – Tin Man Despite only joining in 2010, this will be Matt’s ninth EOMS show to date. Since joining the society he has enjoyed the range of roles he has been asked to perform including a gondolier, a stage manager, a rich gentleman, an ancestral painting and a poor student (not much acting was required for the last one). Matt has greatly enjoyed this show and the opportunity to perform alongside such a talented group of singers and actors. He hopes you enjoy the show and for once he is hoping to be told that his performance was very stiff! Janet Green – Sorceress of the North Janet sings as a soprano soloist with local choral societies, performs classical vocal recitals and enjoys teaching others to sing. She first sang in public at the age of three and has been stage struck ever since, but, being the fourth generation of her family to perform on stage, this is hardly surprising. She has loved all the fifty plus principal parts she has played, from her first role aged eleven as Nellie (Annie Get Your Gun) to her favourite, Violetta (La Traviata) and is having great fun in her first visit to the land of Oz. Nikki Bradley - Wicked Witch of the West Nikki joined EOMS in 2012 after a twenty year break from performing. Previously a member of a number of societies in Bristol she has enjoyed playing a variety of supporting and principal roles. Her favourites being Bonnie in Anything Goes, Miss Mona in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and the Bakers Wife in Into The Woods. Since joining EOMS she has appeared in Musical Odyssey, Fiddler on the Roof, Ruddigore and I Love Musicals. She is now looking forward to having the opportunity to be "wicked" in The Wizard of Oz! Mick Attwood - Wizard Mick is looking forward to returning to Oz after a number of years’ absence. He hopes the good people of Oz remember him fondly and that his new atomic rocket ship works! Pleased not to playing a ghost again, Mick enjoys performing with EOMS and has played a variety of principal roles over the years, his favourite still the crafty cockney Alfred Doolittle. He also performs regularly in cabarets with Encore, a small group formed from The Southern International Minstrels, Now retired from teaching, Mick enjoys home-life and hopes at last to learn to play the piano, something he has wanted to do since leaving school. Rachael Beckingham - Gloria This is Rachael’s second show with EOMS since returning home from studying psychology at the University of Bristol. She has previously performed with the junior section in shows such as Me and My Girl and The Boyfriend. Whilst at university, she also performed in productions of Anything Goes and Spring Awakening. When Rachael is not performing onstage or singing with a local choir, she can be found pursuing one of her favourite hobbies. Rachael is a keen violinist and has played in various orchestras and venues all around the country, including the Royal Albert Hall and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She was the leader of the Bristol Symphonia and currently performs with the Winchester Symphony Orchestra. She is very much looking forward to being part of this production. EOMS would like to thank…. The staff and technical crew at The Point for their help in bringing this production to you. Gluelines and Aquaid for providing the cast with parking facilities during show week. All EOMS members, supporters and friends who have helped with this production.
