Wizard of Oz / Introduces Christmas
WHAT IS CHRISTMAS? — The play, “A Wizard of Oz Christmas,” introduced holiday themes with well-known characters. Seen above, the royal librarian, played by
Sophie Mattke, 9, helps the Tin Man, played by Blaise Knueppel, 13, and the scarecrow, played by Nathan Lampe, 12, to learn what they can about Christmas, which
is not celebrated in Oz. At right is the flyer for the 2013 holiday play.
Jannke said it’s great to expose
youngsters to live theater, whether
they’re in the audience or on stage.
“Yes, it’s community theater, but
that’s the best proving ground for
emerging talents,” Jannke said.
The current year’s production, “A
Wizard of Oz Christmas” is another
original production by Jannke. It tells
the story of Dorothy returning to Oz
to see her friends the Scarecrow and
the Tin Man.
But it’s Christmastime, and Dorothy finds herself missing the festivities that were so much part of the
season in Kansas.
“They don’t really celebrate Christmas in Oz,” Jannke said. “In fact, they
don’t know much about it.”
So the Scarecrow and the Tin Man
go to the Great Library of Oz to find
out more. Learning about the custom
of Christmas trees, the duo is determined to cut and decorate a tree to
make Dorothy feel at home, but the
Witch of the Woods is disturbed by
the concept of cutting down “one of
her children.”
The duo returns to Emerald City
without a cut tree, only to find an artificial tree waiting for them. But Dorothy has returned to the bosom of her
family to celebrate, finding again that
“there’s no place like home.”
“It’s not ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ but it’s
set in that world,” Jannke said. “I
thought it would be a neat show to do
this year, which is the 75th anniversary of the release of the 1939 film.”
In addition, he noted that the Watertown area has a tie to ‘The Wizard
of Oz,” as local resident Meinhardt
Raabe played the Munchkin coroner
in the famous movie.
