AJLI Regional Training, “Achieving Community Impact, Building a
Culture of Impact in The Junior League” hosted by The Junior
League of Pittsburgh took place at the University Club on Pitts
Campus, Saturday, March 29th, and in attendance from JLE
were: Kathryn Proper, Aileen Baxter, Catherine Fox, Jen
Bach, Maureen Schraven, Patty Graziano and Meredith
Estrich. Janine Le Sueur is AJLI’s Director of Education &
Programs and presented to JL members from Akron, OH, Dayton, OH, Erie, PA, Huntington, WV, Pittsburgh, PA, Scranton,
PA, Stark County, OH, and Wheeling, WV.
Janine discussed the role of Issue-based Community Impact and
how to make the change in our League to be most effective in
our communities. She discussed ways to focus on meaningful
change and how to stay connected in the community as women
are no longer a generation of full time volunteers. Many volunteers say time is a factor and by identifying our area of interest it
allows members to design their own path to leadership development based upon the issue and the programs supported by JLE.
We become advocates and create an ongoing dialogue within
the community and our League to maximize participation on all
levels.
JLE members will present at the April GMM how we will begin
to change into Issue-based community impact for 2014-2015.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

President
th
On March 29 , seven JLE members attended an exciting AJLI Regional training in Pittsburgh, PA. The subject presented was Issue-Based Community Impact.
This training showed the Erie girls that it’s not just
about what we are doing in the community, but also
about the mark that we leave as a result of our work in the community - what issues
exist and how can we address those issues and make a lasting change. This new way
of searching out our focus areas is part of the upcoming direction that AJLI is moving.
We are excited about our future, guided by AJLI.
This transition marks the direction the Junior League of Erie will be taking in
the coming months and years. We realize that the future of the Junior League of Erie
depends on our following AJLI throughout this time of transition. I am so excited
about the new ways of doing things and would love to hear about any ideas that you
may have.
Coming up this month is the annual RAVE event, honoring volunteers in the
Erie area. The event will take place Tuesday, April 29th and always promises to be an
inspiring evening. I hope to see you all there, representing the JLE and sharing in our
awards presentation.

TAKING THE LONG VIEW By Kristi Ferguson, Gold Active
I was born to be in the Junior League, literally. My maternal grandmother was a prominent member of the Junior
League of Seattle. My mother was an involved active in the
Junior League of Philadelphia. I’m sure it made perfect sense
to my mother when she suggested I join the Junior League of
Erie upon moving here in 1990. I was not of the same mindset, however. Like many, I mistakenly assumed the JLE would
be full of upper crust housewives who were looking to fill
time by planning social events and occasionally throwing fundraisers.
I could not have been MORE wrong!
When former active Sarah Glennon invited me to the JLE
Open House in 2001, I was delighted and surprised at the
women I met. Since I had young twins at the time, it seemed
the perfect opportunity to meet women like myself and also
give back to the Erie community.
After becoming a provisional later that year, I quickly
learned about the internal structure of the JLE. This provisional training helped prepare me for my active year, yet I was extremely intimidated by my first active placement on the Fund Development council. I
was so impressed by the women leading different councils and committees, never imagining myself in those positions. Over the next decade, I slowly
accumulated more knowledge and experience from my placements. I’ve been happy to chair various councils, hold VP positions and serve on the
Board more than once. My experiences have included Admissions/Provisional, CIC, Nominating, Secretary, and many others.
Besides the wonderful friendships I’ve made in the JLE, I’ve been able to volunteer in ways I’ve never expected. One of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had was during my placement on the EASE (Erie Adaptive Sailing Experience) committee. This involved helping organize a regatta
for disabled individuals, who sailed in access dinghies on Presque Isle Bay. Through a JLE partnership with BCMS, I was fortunate enough to help plan
this event and watch these remarkable men, women and children from all over the world sail and
compete despite physical limitations. I was incredibly humbled and proud to be part of that experience. Throughout subsequent years, the JLE has given me dozens of volunteer opportunities which
have helped me grow as an active and person in general.
As I transition to sustainer this year, I see the JLE from a different perspective. I am so encouraged
to see young, energetic and talented women breathe new life into our organization. I am anxious to
see our League grow in our new Headquarters and pursue unique innovative fundraisers. I do not
see my new status as being “put out to pasture”, but an opportunity to serve the JLE in a fresh way.
I look forward to a bright future for our league and am eager to be a part of it!
~Kristi

DPIL Event at First Assembly
Sarah Godwin, Amanda Lasky, Kristi Leighton, Nicole Wethli, and
Holly Murphy assisted with Erie First Assembly of God's Preschool Orientation on Thursday, February 27th. The school provided a counter in a
high traffic area and was sure to mention their "friends at the Junior
League" to all parents. Most children were already signed up for the
Imagination Library program but those who were not gladly took the brochure to enroll their children. The ladies also distributed Junior League
flyers to mothers and welcomed them to join our group. The school is
planning to work with the league again in the fall to bring the Caregiver
Reading Training to their parents. We look forward to kicking off their new
school year with this fantastic program.
