DAYTONA 500 PRODUCTION ELEMENTS
FOX Lab in force at Daytona 500…. FOX Sports' center for innovation, FOX Lab is rolling out
some new technologies for the Daytona 500, along with some that have been enhanced for
2016:
AUGMENTED REALITY AND THE VIRTUAL CAR
FOX is putting immersive 3D graphics in the middle of the action, giving our reporters the ability
to point out the features of a racecar in augmented reality through the virtual version of the
cutaway car. Utilizing VIZ-RT technology, FOX Sports uses a high-tech touchscreen to provide
magnified looks at the smallest details of the high-powered machines on the track. It gives
viewers a clear and illustrative explanation of how the car works and performs through its
components.
VIRTUAL GRAPHICS
Camera-tracking technologies from Stype provide FOX Sports the ability to place 3D graphics in
the real environment. For example, FOX showcases specialty graphics including virtual
leaderboards, sponsor enhancements and race summaries, are projected onto the track.
MORE SUPER MOTION AND HIGHER FRAME RATES
High-speed cameras are placed in strategic areas to replay the action in high speed.



4k cameras – with the next generation of 4k cameras – will be able to replay and zoom
into the action now as a high-frame-rate camera. With one camera, we can now break
down a wreck in multiple ways using a single camera shot – zoom into the car that
caused the wreck, the car that got caught up in it, and the one that got away.
Gopher Cam returns for its 8th season of NASCAR, now with a new lens and new
positions in harm’s way right in the middle of the track as you see 43 cars go over it.
All LED lights for broadcasts.
GROUND CAM POSITIONING
FOX’s Ground Cam is a small, stationary high-definition point-of-view camera buried
underneath the asphalt track surface. The cameras have been paired with high quality
condenser microphones for an unbelievably realistic audio/video experience. Advances in lens
quality and materials enable FOX to provide a much wider and clearer field of view. For
Daytona, there are four cameras placed in harm’s way, including one in Turn 4 and another on
the backstretch, positioned so cars run the cameras over at more than 200 mph.
GYRO-CAM
Gyro-Cam is a gyro-stabilized, in-car camera mounted in the center of the cockpit that rotates
as cars enter Daytona International Speedway’s extreme 31-degree banked turns, keeping its
view level with the horizon at all times. The resulting look demonstrates to viewers just how
dramatic Daytona’s turn angles are at race speed.
EQUIPMENT BREAKDOWN
FOX Sports employs six main mobile production units in the multi-network television compound
at Daytona International Speedway. In addition, the network’s coverage from Speedweeks
requires two satellite uplinks and a set of mobile generators that provide nearly two megawatts
of power independent of the local power source. This command center directs the following
arsenal of production equipment:


20 manned cameras
4 in-track ground cameras
1 Phantom 4k Flex camera
2 Xmo cameras located at the end of pit road and the start/finish line
1 Tower Cam (33’ version)
2 grass cams
10 robotic race cameras
3 robotic Hollywood Hotel cameras
Jib camera with Stype 3d enhancement
8 in-car camera packages, each featuring three different camera angles
4 wireless roving pit/garage camera crews
2 in-car Gyro-Cams
25 digital video replay devices with more than 110 channels of recording/play out
43 race team communication radios, one for each car on the track
More than 150 microphones placed along the track and throughout Daytona
International Speedway
Special audio editing unit employed solely for driver to crew chief communication to play
back live interaction as well as edited material

JEFF GORDON
Analyst, FOX NASCAR
Four-time NASCAR CUP SERIES champion Jeff Gordon, one of the most iconic names in
racing and pop culture, joins FOX NASCAR in 2016 as a full-time race analyst. Gordon, who
sits third on NASCAR’s all-time wins list with 93 victories, steps into the FOX NASCAR booth
alongside play-by-play announcer Mike Joy and analyst and Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip only
three months after his final NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES start in the legendary No. 24
Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Gordon’s sixth-place effort in his final race secured a thirdplace finish in the series standings, making him one of only a few athletes to retire at the
pinnacle of their respective sport.
The California native, one of the most versatile drivers of his era, is credited with helping take
NASCAR mainstream in the 1990s. Gordon changed the face of NASCAR, shattering
stereotypes and drawing legions of new fans with his talent, poise and polished appearance that
also made the sport attractive to Madison Avenue. In his 23 years of full-time Cup Series
competition, Gordon served as one of NASCAR’s most effective and committed ambassadors.
Gordon drove for Hendrick Motorsports for his entire Cup Series tenure, from November 1992
through November 2015, winning four Cup Series championships (1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001),
93 races and 81 pole positions, and scoring 325 top-five and 475 top-10 finishes. With his first
title in 1995, Gordon became the youngest champion (24) in NASCAR’s modern era in only his
third full season.
He ranks third behind only NASCAR Hall of Fame drivers Richard Petty (200) and David
Pearson (105) in all-time victories, is a three-time DAYTONA 500 champion and record five-time
BRICKYARD 400 winner. Gordon holds the record for most consecutive seasons with a pole
(23), among numerous other accolades. Furthermore, he is NASCAR’s winningest road-course
driver with nine wins and is the all-time leader with 12 restrictor-plate track victories. In
September 2015, Gordon set a record for most consecutive starts with his 789th race, breaking
Ricky Rudd’s mark of 788 and joining the “iron man” company of legends such as Cal Ripken Jr.
and Brett Favre. Gordon, who was named one of “NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers” in 1998,
retired with 797 consecutive starts, a journey that began with the 1992 season finale at Atlanta
Motor Speedway as Petty brought his racing career to a close.
In preparation for his role as FOX NASCAR analyst, Gordon served as a race analyst for FOX
Sports’ coverage of three NASCAR XFINITY SERIES in 2015. His move to the FOX booth
furthers a career in which his affability and crossover appeal have provided him numerous highprofile television and movie opportunities that include: becoming the only auto racing driver
ever to host Saturday Night Live; co-hosting Live! With Regis and Kelly (now known as Live!
With Kelly and Michael) more than 10 times; appearances as himself on The Simpsons, Spin
City and The Drew Carey Show; movie appearances in Taxi, Herbie: Fully Loaded and Looney
Tunes: Back in Action; TV appearances on Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show
with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Sesame Street; and participation on television’s
Celebrity Poker Showdown and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Sports Edition, among others.

of Excellence (BCCE). Working in collaboration with Partners in Health, Dana Farber Cancer
Institute and the Ministry of Health of Rwanda, BCCE opened its doors in July 2012 and has
treated more than 5,000 patients who otherwise would have no access to care. The country now
boasts one of the highest-achieving cancer programs on the continent and is the only rural
cancer center in East Africa. In 2011, Gordon was invited by President Bill Clinton to join the
Clinton Global Initiative. The Clinton Global Initiative convenes global leaders to create and

McReynolds called the shots as seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt captured the elusive
DAYTONA 500 victory in 1998.
McReynolds’ success and thorough approach to his profession earned him selection to the
Copenhagen/Skoal All-Pro Team, an all-star “who’s who” of crew members, for five straight
years (1991-‘95), and the 1998 UAW GM Teamwork of Excellence award. In addition, he was
