Honors English II Summer Reading Assignment Assignment: -Read the novel Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom -Write a five-paragraph expository essay on the following prompt: Explain how Mitch changed as a result of his interactions with Morrie. Requirements and Essay Map: Format: -Typed, plain font (Calibri, Times New Roman, Arial), 11-12 pt font, double-spaced -MLA formatted heading, title, and page numbers (see below) -Descriptive title, centered, proper capitalization, not bolded/underlined/larger Introduction (paragraph 1) -Open your essay with a universal idea or hook, then tie to the book -Include the title of the novel (italicized), the author, and the genre -Include a very brief summary of the book’s plot -End your introduction with a thesis statement with blueprint Body (paragraphs 2, 3, 4) -Start each paragraph with a transition -Your topic sentence should clearly state a way in which Mitch changed -Each paragraph should use at least TWO pieces of directly quoted textual support from the book -Note: a quote from the book does not need to be dialogue -Use quotation marks around the words from the book. Make sure to copy the line(s) EXACTLY as they are written. -Before using a line from the book, set it up by explaining the context of that line. In other words, tell what was going on in the story when the line occurred and who said it, if necessary. -Directly after each quote, include a parenthetical citation: the author’s last name and page number. ex. It could be a parent or a teacher or just a family member. Any person who teaches you life lessons and tries to help you in anyway possible would be an example. In Mitch Albom’s novel Tuesdays with Morrie , Morrie serves as a role model and teacher for Mitch. Mitch, who was once a student of Morrie’s and hasn’t been in touch since, goes to visit Morrie while he is on his death bed with ALS. through these interactions with Morrie, Mitch learns to be more affectionate, the importance of family, and to open up to people.
