Directions
o You are about to create a Bloom Ball for Imperialism.
o Choose a partner to work with. You will make one Bloom Ball per
partnership and both of you will receive the same grade.
o The questions on the back of this paper are organized according to
the four sections in Chapter 10. Each question corresponds with a
Research Record sheet.
o Do research in your textbook in order to answer the questions on
the back of this paper. Use the Research Record sheet to record
information under the “Notes” section. When you are ready to
transfer that information to the circle pattern, be sure to observe
where the lines are drawn inside the circle. Do not write or draw on
the outside of those lines. They will be used as guides for folding
and connecting the circles to create your ball.
o When you have completed all 12 circle patterns on your Research
Record sheets, cut out the circles (include the black border- you
want it.) Decorate your folds using the same theme you used for
the title, “America Claims an Empire.”
o Fold each circle on the lines so that the folds are facing up. Glue
the circles together. Be sure that all edges are facing up around
your pictures or paragraphs.
o Your Bloom Ball will be graded on its accuracy, creativity, neatness,
and effort.
o This will be valued as two test grades!

Title and Theme
1. Write the name of Chapter 10 so that it is easy to read and attractive. Plan the
lettering to reflect the theme of the chapter. Include your names. You may want to do
this one last after you have done all of your research in Chapter 10.
•
Section 1: Imperialism and America
2. Write down three factors that fueled the new American Imperialism and show a
symbol to represent each factor. Color the symbols.
3. Identify the following four terms; Queen Liliuokalani, Imperialism, Alfred T. Mahan,
and Sanford B. Dole and give the significance of each person. Note, you don’t have
to give the significance for Imperialism. Add colored circles in a creative way.
•
Section 2: The Spanish-American-Cuban War
4. Interpret the quote by William Randolph Hearst and explain Yellow Journalism. Color
this shape yellow.
5. Draw a map of the “War in the Philippines, 1898.” Be sure to include the following; a
title, symbols, key, direction indicator, and color. Answer the Geography Skillbuilder
Questions below the map.
6. Draw a map of the “War in the Caribbean, 1898.” Be sure to include the following; a
title, symbols, key, direction indicator, and color. Answer the Geography Skillbuilder
Questions below the map.

Section 3: Acquiring New Lands
7. Create a colorful political cartoon depicting John Hay’s Open Door Policy. Political
cartoons represent a person’s opinion or viewpoint on an issue. See the political
cartoon on page 377 as an example.
8. Create a colorful time line of key events relating to U.S. relations with Cuba, Puerto
Rico, and the Philippines. Use the following dates; 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1917.
•
Section 4: America as a World Power
9. Make a concept map with Theodore Roosevelt at the center. Have three main
branches titled; 1.) Peacemaker, 2.)Panama Canal and 3.) Roosevelt Corollary. For
each main branch, give three adjectives that describe Roosevelt in relation to that
title. Add color.
10. Record the consequences of the following actions that America took under Wilson’s
“Missionary” Diplomacy; 1.) Wilson uses a minor incident with Mexico as an excuse
to occupy Veracruz. 2.) Wilson recognizes the Carranza government. 3.) Wilson
refuses Carranza’s demand to withdraw U.S. troops sent into Mexico to capture Villa.
Draw an outline of Mexico creatively with this formation. Include color.
