FERDINAND JOHN “FERDIE” LONGMAN BALANAG FOR WINNING THE RIVER PURSUIT AWARD (BEST FIRST FULL FEATURE DOCUMENTARY) AND THE RIVER AMULET AWARD (BEST-DIRECTOR SOUTH ASIAN FILMMAKER CATEGORY) IN THE 2011 SILENT RIVER FILM FESTIVAL HELD IN IRVINE, CALIFORNIA, AND THE GOLDEN ACE AWARD (BEST DOCUMENTARY) IN THE 2010 LAS VEGAS FILM FESTIVAL. WHEREAS, it is appropriate to give recognition to the accomplishments of people who made outstanding performance in their respective fields bringing honor to the city; WHEREAS, Baguio based film director Ferdinand John “Ferdie” Longman Balanag bagged awards for the documentary he directed “Walking the Waking Journey”, a story about a young Tibetan monk who rescued children in 2000 from poor living conditions in the isolated villages in the Himalayan border region of Upper Dolpo, Nepal, which is a story about the hopes and dreams of children and about how one man’s vision is ushering them forward into a more certain future; WHEREAS, he is part of the official selection of participants in the upcoming Kansas International Film Festival in Manhattan, New York, this November 2011; WHEREAS, his films tackle ways to end poverty, encourage peace, educate on environmental issues, thus bringing into light the importance of sustainable development; WHEREAS, aside from documentaries, he produced several TV Productions such as Brain TV, Project Mainstream, The Best of Baguio, and Lifestyle of the North – all featuring travel, events, people, places, food and general interest about Baguio City; WHEREAS, he directed, acted or wrote the script for the theatrical staging of plays and musicals: Idlings of the King (Earl Remington), Sinta (Onofre Pagsanjan), The Boor (Anto Chekov), Wedding Night (Isagani Cruz), Kundiman sa Dekada 80 (Luna Sicat), Saling Pusa (Luna Sicat), Bintao (Efren Yambot), La Mandragola (Nicollo Machiavelli), Tibok (Ferdie Balanag), Ad Infinitum (Ferdie Balanag), Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll (Eric Bogosian), and Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio (Paul Dumol); WHEREAS, he is involved in community groups – Cordillera Green Network, Cordillera Global Network, Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club, Blessed Association of Retired Persons Foundation, Inc., Children’s Education Development Society (Derhadun, India), and Alay sa Kalinisan; WHEREAS, Mr. Balanag has contributed to the arts and cultural scene through his brainchild--IPITIK Festival, a celebration of Cordilleran Art and Culture, as part of Panagbenga Festivities; and WHEREAS, he brought honor to Baguio City for being successful in the field of creative directing; a recognized videographer, editor/cinematographer, co-writer, co-producer and researcher; and recipient of the River Pursuit, River Amulet, and Golden Ace awards: NOW, THEREFORE, on motion, duly seconded, be it RESOLVED, as it is hereby resolved, to commend Mr. Ferdinand John “Ferdie” Longman Balanag for winning the River Pursuit Award (Best First Full Feature Documentary) and the River Amulet Award (Best-Director South Asian Filmmaker Category) in the 2011 Silent River Film Festival held in Irvine, California, and the Golden Ace Award (Best Documentary) in the 2010 Las Vegas Film Festival.
