Program Objectives

To support the creative capacity and professional development of First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists and arts organizations.

To facilitate the reclamation, retention, renewal and transmission of First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultural knowledge and creative practice.

To support exploration, creation and production of customary and contemporary First Nations, Inuit and Métis arts practice.

To support the presentation, exhibition, and sharing of works by First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists in Canada and internationally.

To strengthen and support the presence of First Nations, Inuit and Métis arts in communities.

Component

Small-Scale Activities

Eligible Applicants

Professional artists, aspiring artists, cultural professionals, cultural carriers, groups and organizations

Eligible activities include

Small-scale activities to advance an applicant’s career or practice

Grant Amounts up to $3,000 total per applicant per year

Apply any time before starting the project

Assessment Criteria

Impact

• potential impact of the activity/proposal on your career

• artistic, cultural or professional rationale, including timeliness of the activity

• suitability of the activity to your artistic/cultural practice

Feasibility

• your capacity and experience to undertake the activity

Travel

Eligible Applicants

Professional artists, aspiring artists, cultural professionals, cultural carriers, groups and organizations

Eligible activities include

Travel within Canada or abroad that further professional development, access new markets or international presence

Grant Amounts up to $15,000 total per applicant per year

Assessment Criteria

Impact

The potential of the project to:

• develop your career or national/international profile

• advance First Nations, Inuit and Métis arts practices (customary or contemporary)

• build connections and exchange knowledge

• generate future opportunities for yourself, or other First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists

Relevance

• the artistic or cultural rationale, including timeliness of the activity

• the suitability of the event, opportunity, partners or host organizations involved

Feasibility

• the capacity and experience you and your partners or host organizations have to undertake the activity

Short-Term Projects

Eligible Applicants

Professional artists, aspiring artists, cultural professionals, cultural carriers, groups and organizations

Eligible activities include

Creating, knowing and/or sharing activities lasting up to 18 months

Grant Amounts

Up to $75,000 per project

4 deadlines per year

Artistic Merit

• the clarity of your artistic vision and its alignment with your project

• rigour in the artistic process

• the artistic quality of your previous work including acknowledgement of peers, artistic or cultural community

Impact

The potential of the project to:

• contribute to your artistic development

• enrich the cultural life of your community: urban, rural, reserve or other self-defined communities

• advance your artistic practice

Feasibility

• a reasonable budget, including other revenue sources and efficient use of resources

• support from your community

Eligible Applicants

Professional artists, cultural professionals, groups and organizations

Eligible activities include

Creating, knowing and/or sharing activities lasting up to 36 months

Grant Amounts

Up to $150,000 per project

2 deadlines per year

Assessment Criteria

Artistic Merit

• the clarity of your artistic vision and its alignment with your programming

• rigour in the artistic process

• the artistic quality of your previous work, including acknowledgement of peers, artistic or cultural community

Impact

The potential of the project to:

• contribute to your artistic development

• enrich the cultural life of your community: urban, rural, reserve or other self-defined communities

• advance your artistic practice

• strengthen the understanding, appreciation and integration of First Nations, Inuit and Métis art

Feasibility

• a reasonable budget, including other revenue sources and efficient use of resources

• support from your community

Investment in First Nations, Inuit and Métis human resources organization’s or project’s governance structure

• level and significance of paid First Nations, Inuit and Métis staff and management within organization’s structure or proposed activity, as demonstrated by detailed job descriptions of key creative/administrative positions

• Responsibility of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people within the organization’s or project’s governance structure

Component

Indigenous Organizations (Core Funding)

Eligible Applicants

Non-Profit Organizations controlled by First Nations, Inuit or Métis individuals

Eligible activities include

Renewal support for ongoing programming activities

Grant Amounts up to 60% of total revenues, averaged over the preceding three years

1 deadline every 2 or 4 years

Assessment Criteria

Artistic Merit

• artistic and/or cultural vision of your organization

• process and rigour of your programmatic decision-making

• artistic quality of your organization’s programming

Impact

• on the career of the programmed artist or artists

• on the organization’s presence and sustainability

• on your community: urban, rural, reserve or other self-defined communities

• on the artistic practice(s)

• strengthen the understanding, appreciation and integration of First Nations, Inuit and Métis art

• on the advancement of the cultures of Indigenous peoples

Feasibility

• a reasonable budget, including other revenue sources and efficient use of resources and deficit plans (if applicable).

• community involvement and engagement (if applicable), as demonstrated through letters of support

• justification of the funds requested and expenses covered by the grant

• strength of your organization’s strategic, and financial planning

Investment in First Nations, Inuit and Métis human resources

• level and significance of paid First Nations, Inuit and Métis staff/management within organization’s structure/ proposed activity, as shown by detailed job descriptions of key creative/administrative positions

• responsibility of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people within the organization’s/project’s governance structure
