Dr. Jeanese Badenock joined the department of
Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS) as a
Lecturer in Synthetic Organic Chemistry at the
University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill,
Barbados in 2004. She holds a BSc (Hons) in
Chemistry and Mathematics from the UWI, Cave
Hill and a PhD in Chemistry from Dartmouth
College where her research focused on the
chemistry of the heterocyclic compound, indole.
Dr. Badenock’s awards include the R L Seale Prize
in Chemistry, the UWI Class of 1996 Valedictorian
award, a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship
(declined), a GAANN Fellowship under a
Department of Education training grant, the John H. Wolfenden Teaching Prize and the
Karen E. Wetterhahn Fellowship in Chemistry while at Dartmouth. She was also a finalist
for the UWI/Guardian General Premium Teaching Award in 2007. In addition to her
duties as coordinator of the Chemistry sub-discipline, she is also a member of the
Barbados National Ozone Steering Committee, a consultant to the United Nations
Environment Programme Regional Office of Latin America and the Caribbean (UNEP
ROLAC) dealing with Ozone depleting substances and the founding manager of the
Caribbean Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) Solvent Support Facility and has served for
many years as the Chairperson of the BCS Safety Committee. She continues to publish in
the field of indole chemistry and is particularly interested in the synthesis of interesting
indole alkaloids.
