2014
Welcome to the New Zealand School of Music, an exciting venture combining the strengths of Massey and Victoria Universities. We have a rich
range of offerings and excellent staff, many with international careers.
We hope that you will enjoy your studies with us.
Emeritus Professor Barrie Macdonald, Interim Director, NZSM
The New Zealand School of Music operates from Massey University (Mt
Cook, Albany and Palmerston North) and Victoria University (Kelburn) campuses. Classical Performance,
Composition and Musicology are based primarily at Kelburn. Jazz and Music Therapy are based primarily at Mt Cook, with a separate Jazz programme available at Albany. Some academic papers/courses are available extramurally through Massey University from Palmerston North; other academic papers/courses are available through Victoria University, which also includes a few extramural options.
This handbook contains a calendar of dates, staff contact details and other practical information relating to your study at the NZSM. You will also find information about central university services that can provide you with support when you need it.
Details of the content and requirements of your papers/courses are given in the Paper/Course Outlines which will be posted on Blackboard, a web-‐based facility for students and staff to which you will be introduced by your lecturers at the first class for each course you are taking.
For details of the NZSM’s statutes and policies, programmes, events, activities, scholarship information
and much more see the NZSM website www.nzsm.ac.nz.
Student queries, issues or concerns:
If issues arise of a nature that cannot be resolved through discussion with your teacher or Course
Coordinator (in the case of a class-‐taught paper/course), in the first instance please approach your
Programme Leader if you have concerns or matters for discussion. Note also that the University has a system of student representatives, who can convey anonymously to the Course Coordinator any
concerns class members may have.
If it is necessary to seek further advice, you should contact the Deputy Director of the NZSM, Associate
Professor Greer Garden. Please refer to the staff contact list on page 13 for her contact details.
After all options above have been explored, Emeritus Professor Barrie Macdonald, Interim Director is available to speak with you. In this case, please contact Marcia McNab, the Executive Assistant to the
Director on
(04) 463 5342 or email marcia.mcnab@nzsm.ac.nz to make an appointment.
To ensure the process is as speedy as possible, please ensure any complaints or issues are well
documented to date before approaching the Deputy Director or Director.
The Victoria University of Wellington Student Association (VUWSA) and Massey Wellington Student
Association (MaWSA) are also available for support to NZSM students.

Info
You are students of Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) which is a joint venture of both
Massey University and Victoria University. For those completing a degree or diploma entirely with
NZSM, these qualifications are jointly awarded by the two universities. Your studies will take place predominantly on the Kelburn, Mt Cook or Albany Campuses. Please use these terms when referring to your education rather than focusing individually on either university.
Te Kōkī is simply translated as the 'Dawn Chorus'. The name Te Kōkī was gifted to NZSM to acknowledge
a source or musical inspiration and to provide it with a distinctive 'Aotearoa-‐New Zealand' flavour.
The terms ‘NZSM’, ‘Te Kōkī’, ‘New Zealand School of Music’, the ‘bird’ logo and the joint universities logo and statement have specific guidelines and rules around their use. While they SHOULD be used for any event or activity hosted, presented, sponsored or supported by NZSM they should only be used within these guidelines and rules. The NZSM Marketing Coordinator or your Programme Leader can advise you further.

After hours access is available at all other times with a swipe card. Your swipe card will automatically be
activated once your fees are paid.
The Mt Cook building is open from 7am until 6pm, Monday to Friday. You have after-‐hours access from
6pm until midnight, Monday to Friday, and from 9am until midnight on Saturday and Sunday with a swipe card. Please ask at the NZSM Mt Cook office about getting a swipe card.
NB: Post-‐graduate students no longer have 24 hour access at the Mt Cook campus
The Albany building is open from 7am until 6pm, Monday to Friday. You have after-‐hours access to these buildings until midnight with a swipe card. Weekend hours are from 9am until midnight with a swipe card.
4
The NZSM Leave Policy will be distributed to all students via Blackboard at the start of Trimester 1
All leave taken or classes missed, including for sickness or other personal reasons, will count as classes missed in the student’s attendance record. The mandatory attendance requirement for most papers/courses is 80%.
If you are away due to illness, please leave a phone message with your Programme Administrator, who will notify your lecturers. You must bring a medical certificate for the period of absence to your
Programme Administrator as soon as possible after you return to classes.
If illness is likely to prevent you completing the final assessment for a paper/course in performance, you can apply to your Programme Leader to have your assessment delayed, but if you have already had your quota of lessons for the paper/course, you will not be entitled to extra lessons. If you have missed more than 20% of classes and lessons, the Programme Leader may recommend you withdraw from the paper/course. Note that delayed assessment for one student may not be granted if the whole group is to be assessed.
In the case of written work, extensions may be granted by the Coordinator of the paper/course concerned. If for reasons of illness or adverse personal circumstances you cannot complete your final piece of assessment for the paper/course, or its preparation was impaired, you can apply for an aegrotat pass in the whole paper/course. In general, it is better to seek an extension for the final assessment. For both performance and written work, extensions for any work beyond the final exam period require the approval of the Director NZSM. See the assessment handbook for further details: http://www.victoria.ac.nz/documents/policy/staff-‐policy/assessment-‐handbook.pdf
It is highly likely that while studying at the NZSM you will change your contact details at least once! If your circumstances change, please update your contact details on MyVictoria http://my.vuw.ac.nz, otherwise staff may not be able to contact you with important information.
The NZSM is not responsible if you lose any of your personal effects, or for any theft that takes place while belongings are left unattended. Doors must not under any circumstance be propped open after hours -‐ this endangers other students’ safety and poses a security risk to NZSM facilities, which may result in after hours access being curtailed.

Victoria University of Wellington and Massey University operate non-‐smoking policies on all of their campuses.
In general, Victoria University does not permit smoking under cover ways, atriums, or within three metres of any building. The open courtyard on the second level of the School of Music premises at
Kelburn is considered to be part of the building and is consequently a non-‐smoking area.
Massey University, Mt Cook site is a non-‐smoking area except for designated areas where students may smoke. Smoking in the vicinity of the main entrance to Block One or near the Concert Hall entrance is prohibited.
The full smoking policies of each University can be viewed on each Universities website and students are requested to make themselves fully conversant with it.

As an NZSM student you have access to the student services of both Massey and Victoria Universities.
Generally you will only need to show your NZSM ID card, though sometimes you may need to take additional action to access particular services. If there are any problems contact an NZSM office. If you wish to use counselling or health services you will need to register at the University of your home campus.
New Mt Cook/Kelburn based NZSM students need to collect their student ID cards from the
Enrolments Office at Victoria University, located at Room HU119, Level 1, Hunter Building, Kelburn
Campus. You should request to receive an NZSM ID card, rather than a Victoria University one. The
NZSM ID card can be helpful in allowing discounts at some concerts, music shops etc. Once you have collected your ID card, you then need to visit the Victoria University library to obtain a barcode sticker for your ID card. Without this you will not be able to use the services at Victoria or Massey University
libraries.
Albany students should email a photo to enrolment-‐enquiries@vuw.ac.nz with their student ID number and request that their ID card be posted to them.
You must be fully enrolled and have paid your fees in full to receive your student ID card.
Returning students can update the expiry date on their ID cards at the Faculty of Humanities and Social
Sciences, located on level four of the Murphy Building, or at the Mt Cook NZSM office. The first student
ID card is free of charge and replacement cards cost $21, which can be paid at the Enrolment/Payment counter on level 1 of the Hunter Building at the Kelburn Campus.
As an NZSM student, you will have access to the libraries on the Albany, Kelburn and Mt Cook campuses. You will need your NZSM ID card (with a barcode sticker) to use and borrow from these libraries. Mt Cook and Kelburn based students should visit the Victoria University library to obtain a barcode sticker for their ID cards before they use the Victoria / Massey libraries.
6
Kelburn and Mt Cook students:
Your IT username is printed on your Confirmation of Enrolment, and your password for the first time
logging in will be your student ID number.
There are Victoria ITS computers on both the Kelburn and Mt Cook campuses that offer access to myVictoria – the student portal – and also to standard software such as Microsoft Office, and other specialised software like SPSS and Endnote. There is no charge for internet usage. If you are having trouble logging on to myVictoria or this is the first time you are using your ITS account, you will need to
reset your student password by calling 04 463 5050. This is explained in Victoria’s student guide.
It is very important to ensure that all NZSM students check their VUW student email address, which is attached to myVictoria. This will often be a first port of call for Blackboard announcements or messages from lecturers containing vital academic information, so this email account needs to be checked on a daily basis. There is a setting that enables students to forward incoming mail to this account on to a
personal email address that you will check regularly.
Music Therapy students are likely to need access to computers on the Massey IT network as well, and may collect an ITS form from the Mt Cook NZSM office. If other students at Mt Cook run into difficulties from not being able to access the Massey IT network, they should contact the Mt Cook NZSM office in the first instance. VUW’s Online Library Resources are available to all NZSM students at http://library.victoria.ac.nz/library/resources/online/bysubjectarea/music.html.
Albany students:
You should contact the administrator at Albany to organise an ITS login when you start studying.
Mt Cook
The computer rooms at Mt Cook are 1D02 (midi lab) and the keyboard laboratory (1D14), and are accessible by swipe card. These rooms are not available for student use when there are classes being held in them. There are also computers in the postgraduate room available for research postgraduate
students (Masters or Doctoral level thesis) only.
The rules of access will be posted in the rooms, and these may change from time to time.
Kelburn
The keyboard laboratory, room 202 at the Kelburn campus is accessible to all students with a priority to students working on their ear training, via swipe card, when classes are not being held in there. Access to this area of the building is limited to the hours of 8am-‐6pm, Monday to Friday. Generally, the building is open on Saturday mornings due to activities being held in the Adam Concert Room. If you cannot access the building during these times, you will need to contact Campus Security in the Alan
MacDiarmid Building. Other general use computers are available around Victoria University campus and in the library. Students should remember that the corresponding keyboard laboratory at Mt Cook campus (1D14) is available evenings and weekends for students who apply for Mt Cook swipe card
access.
Albany
There is a dedicated room for NZSM students at Albany with 6 computers available for use – see the administrator at NZSM Albany to organise an IT login to use these.
7
Please note the NZSM adheres to strict copyright law. Do not copy more than 5% of any book or copyright material.
There is no free photocopying available for undergraduate students at the NZSM.
Student photocopying is available at 1D02 at Mt Cook, in the NZSM Kelburn foyer, and at the VUW
Library and computer labs, among other places, at Kelburn. You will need to use the docupos machine to load money onto your ID card in order to pay for photocopying.
At Mt Cook there are lockers available for student use. There is a $25 bond to be paid for a locker key, which students will get back when they return the key. Students should pay this fee at Massey Student
Central then bring their receipt to the NZSM Mt Cook office to get a locker key.
At Kelburn there are a variety of lockers available. These are allocated by the NZSM Office. Please come to the NZSM office to request a locker. Those lockers that have a key provided by the NZSM will require a $15 bond. Students will be asked to empty their lockers at the end of the 2 nd trimester. Locks will be cut and lockers will be emptied after Monday 17 November. Students will have to make a special request to retain their locker over the summer period.
The Mt Cook campus has two general instrument storerooms – located in the middle corridor of the practice rooms – rooms 1C21 and 1C31, and a bass storeroom in room 1C17. These are kept locked at all times. To obtain a key, students must go to the Contact Centre in block 4 at Massey, pay $15 and bring the receipt to the NZSM office where they will be issued a key. Alternatively there is a key in the office that can be borrowed and brought back each time.
Mt Cook:
Practise space is available on the Mt Cook and Kelburn campuses. The Mt Cook practise rooms and combo rooms operate on a booking schedule. This is posted at the end of each week on the notice board opposite the combo rooms. To book a room, just write your name on the sheet. Class times have been blocked off in advance. You are allowed to book rooms for a maximum of 2 hours at a time. If there is a conflict, a staff member’s booking will take precedence. If you wish to book the hall, please
see Berys Cuncannon in the office.
Practise facilities are for the use of NZSM performance students only -‐ your fees are paying for the upkeep of the space and the instruments provided. If you need to bring someone who is not enrolled in to the NZSM building, then you must get a signed letter from the Head of Jazz in advance , stating their names and the time and date of the rehearsal. Failure to comply with this regulation may result in the
removal of non-‐NZSM personnel by security. This does happen.
Please be considerate when using the practise rooms. Don’t play too loudly, as it may disturb those around you and / or damage the equipment. If you would like to play funk / fusion style material, please use room 1C46 as the drum kit in that room is the most appropriate; the other kits are bop kits and will not stand up to the punishment.
If you are using the hall, the equipment is to be found in the locked room across the corridor and the key is available from the office. Staff and students are equally responsible for returning this equipment to the room after you have finished.
8
NB: Strictly NO non-‐NZSM students may be brought into the building for rehearsals without prior permission from the NZSM. A letter authorising non NZSM students should be requested from the Mt
Cook office and be available to show to security if required.
Students are not permitted to teach private students on campus.
Kelburn:
Level 1 practice room booking sheets are available on the notice board next to Room 102. The booking sheets are posted on the previous Thursday for the following week. Only students in particular papers/courses can book practice rooms. There are strict room booking rules which are printed alongside these sheets. The following rooms are booked through the computer booking system at the
Kelburn NZSM Office: Rooms 101, 110, 211, 209, ACR, (and EMS studios). All these rooms follow the room booking rules outlined on the counter.
NB: Strictly NO non-‐NZSM students may be brought into the building for rehearsals without prior
permission from the NZSM.
Students are not permitted to teach private students on campus.
Mt Cook: There is a student kitchen ‘DIY kai’ located in the Student Centre at Massey University (block
5) on level 1.
Kelburn : There is a student common room and kitchen located in the courtyard of the Kelburn NZSM building.
On occasion, and especially during performance and assessment events video, audio or photographic images may be recorded by NZSM staff. NZSM may wish to use these recordings or images for promotional, informational or archival purposes: eg on the NZSM website, facebook page, Flickr or
Vimeo channels, in brochures, posters, guides or advertisements. Students have the right to request that these recordings NOT be used for anything other than assessment purposes.
In the case of printed materials, NZSM will make all reasonable efforts to gain specific permission to use images. Where images or recordings have been published on websites, students have the right to request that they be removed by applying to the NZSM Marketing Coordinator, NZSM Executive or their
Programme Leaders.
If you have a disability you will need to register at the University of your home campus to use its
Disability Support Services.
Student health services are available to all currently enrolled NZSM students and any dependants. This service provides a high standard of primary care, with experienced General Practitioners and registered nurses. This service can also help you in applying for special exams facilities and aegrotat consideration
during examinations. You will find Student Health Services at:
Kelburn Campus – level 1 of the Student Union Building
Mt Cook Campus – level 3 of the Student Centre.
For more information visit the student health services website of your home campus.
Albany and Mt Cook: http://student-‐services.massey.ac.nz

Counselling services are available to all currently enrolled NZSM students. Qualified counsellors can provide support if you are experiencing personal difficulties in any area of life. You can contact the
Counselling Service:
Kelburn: (04) 463 5310
Mt Cook: (04) 801 5799 ext. 62088
Albany : (09) 443 9783
If you’d like to develop more productive ways of studying, or are struggling with some aspect of your studies, there is lots of help available from the Learning Support Centre of each campus. Trained staff are available to discuss any academic problems NZSM students may have. You can also take advantage of peer-‐tutoring schemes whereby you receive individual tutoring in the subject of difficulty from another student. If you would like to have a peer-‐tutor, please talk to the lecturer co-‐ordinating the paper/course concerned.

Each campus has designated student parking areas. At the Albany campus all student parking is free.
There are pay and display parking areas at Kelburn Campus as well as student parking areas. Student parking requires a parking permit and applications for permits are available from VUWSA.
To park in a pay and display area at the Mt Cook campus you will need a permit. These can be obtained from Student Central. The permit is free, but you will still have to pay to park. A permit to park for the whole trimester in the carpark at 60 Tasman St can also be obtained from Care Park 0800 227 372.
Please note there is no free parking for students at the Mt Cook campus.
If you are travelling from Mt Cook to Kelburn there is a ‘Campus Connection’ bus route (Number 18) which runs from Wallace St (outside Mt Cook campus) up to Kelburn Parade. Buses run twice hourly throughout the day and more frequently at peak times. For more information, visit www.metlink.org.nz.
If you have classes on two campuses on the same day you can get a free bus pass by taking your timetable to the Student Association at Kelburn Campus for free travel between classes.
News and detailed information about NZSM Events are published each month in the Dawn Chorus , the free NZSM e-‐newsletter. To sign up to receive this publication and to find out more about events the
NZSM has scheduled this year, please visit http://www.nzsm.ac.nz/events/
