Selections are chosen from textual works from around the world to include a study of cultural and historical contents to expand the knowledge and perspective of our students. 課程說明(與書院概況 Catalog 一致): COURSE DESCRIPTION (from College Catalog): This course is the second semester of a year-long course that studies a diverse selection of novels, poetry and drama either written in or translated into English. It includes a study of the cultural and historical contents from which the literary works originate. Forster, retold by Clare West On-going students: The Little Prince by Antoine de Sainte-Exupèry and a student-chosen text from level 6. 課程目標: LEARNING OUTCOMES (objectives):By the end of the course students should: 1. better understand the various worldviews that writers have and be able to compare those views to a Christian worldview 2. have a better appreciation for literary techniques and have read and discussed works of literature from many different cultures and genres of literature 3. appreciate different cultures (both present and past) 4. understand the importance of looking at literature within a historical/cultural context 5. be able to analyze a piece of literature, including: context, the influence of the author’s background, type of genre, thematic purpose, characterization, setting, and impact on the original and present readers 6. reinforce the cooperative learning skills being taught in Small Group Communication courses by providing leadership practice, group interaction, conflict resolution, time management, summarization of group decisions, group presentations and peer evaluation 7. write a short reflective paper (2-3 pages) on his/her own personal journey through literature 8. pass quizzes and exams that assess understanding of literary genre and techniques, reading comprehension, understanding of the factual knowledge from the literature read and the ability to apply the themes of literature to their own lives 9. extra students: write a paper on The Little Prince in comparison/contrast mode 課程規章與對學生的期許: COURSE POLICIES & EXPECTATIONS: 1. It is your responsibility to make sure you attend every class on time. Being late or missing class means that you may miss a quiz or the checking of reading responses. 2. You may not make up a quiz, reading response or other class assignment for any reason. 3. It is your responsibility to take care of toilet needs before class. If an emergency arises you are to ask permission to leave class one at a time. 評分方式: ASSESSMENT ITEMS AND GRADING SCALE: Quizzes/reading responses 20% Tests 30% Group projects Exams (2) 10% 20% each 教學和學習方法: TEACHING AND LEARNING APPROACHES: Students will be given reading response questions to help them prepare for the following class. There will be short answer questions on each reading response which can be used to study for quizzes and tests. Some of these will be collected and reviewed by the teacher at the beginning of class. Discussions will be centered on these questions with further material given in lectures. A reflective paper will be given as indicated.
