Flies emerging from cry0, cryb, or cry+ cultures in LD had their numbers counted every hour for several days (after rearing in LD). The cry0 and cry+ control strains were essentially isogenic (see MATERIALS AND METHODS). The two kinds of data plots to the left show that all culture types exhibited rhythmic eclosion: periods ca. 24 hours, revealed by the analytical outcomes in the righthand two plots (information about which are in Figures 2 and 5). But the Histograms (which plot average numbers of emergents per time point per day) show a relatively early time preferences for cry0: culmination ca. one hour before lights, whereas control and cryb flies emerged with peaks shortly after lights-on. 3
