Welcome to the English Law and French Law LLB and
Master I en Droit Programme
Reed Smith LLP & The Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London
To support your learning and future career development during (and beyond!) your degree, international City
law firm, Reed Smith LLP, has developed a partnership with The Dickson Poon School of Law. The
partnership aims to provide you with support, advice and opportunities for practical work experience during
the four years of your programme. To achieve this goal, we will utilise Reed Smith’s alumni from the
programme in the firm’s London and Paris offices together with the firm’s Graduate Recruitment Team,
providing you with the firm’s collective knowledge of the skills and qualities required to help you succeed.
In tandem with The Dickson Poon School of Law, including the senior faculty and alumni of the AngloFrench programme, Reed Smith has developed a number of events for you during the four years of the
programme. Below is the general outline which follows all four years of your programme. Specific event
information including dates will be sent to all relevant students.
2015-16 PROGRAMME OF EVENTS
Autumn (Years 1 & 2 students: London Welcome)
Reed Smith will be hosting an event at their offices in London for you early in your first year.
This will be an opportunity, in a relaxed environment, to welcome you to London and for you
to:
•
•
•
meet your second year colleagues from the programme;
talk to alumni of the programme who have gone on to secure jobs at Reed Smith; and
begin to gain a more detailed understanding of what a career at an international City firm entails.
Autumn (Years 3 & 4 students: Paris Welcome & Succeeding in Paris and your work experience
opportunities)
At the start of your third year, when you arrive in Paris, Reed Smith’s team will welcome you at an event
held at their Paris offices. This event will focus on giving you more detailed advice on successfully navigating
the French university system and ensure that you make a successful start at the Université Paris I Panthéon
Sorbonne.
We are aware that this is also the time for you to begin planning ahead for your future job applications, so
Reed Smith’s Graduate Recruitment Team will also provide a detailed presentation of the timelines and
application routes – and will also highlight their work experience opportunities available in the form of
vacation schemes/internships at both their London and Paris offices. In addition, Reed Smith staff will run a
session in Paris giving you guidance on practical details of the application process.
Spring (Year 2 students: Preparing for Paris)
In your second year of the course, Reed Smith will again welcome you to their offices in
London for an event in the spring term – a few months before you commence the second part of your degree
in Paris. The aim of this session will be to aid your preparation for the exciting two years ahead in Paris.
Representatives from Reed Smith’s Paris office will attend also (either in person or via videoconference) to
provide you with useful insights into the French university system and to pass on advice to smooth your
transition into Years 3 and 4 of the programme. Once again, the attendees from Reed Smith will include
King’s College Anglo-French Programme alumni (who are now lawyers at Reed Smith) to share their
experiences and tips for success with you.
Summer (Year 3 students: Work experience opportunities in Paris and London)
Reed Smith will offer opportunities for work experience placements in both Paris and
London, programmes from which a number of students have gone on to secure jobs with the firm in both
locations.
The opportunities, which will have a maximum number in both locations and be subject to successful
completion of the application process, will comprise either a two-month summer internship in Paris and/or a
two-week vacation scheme in London.
These placements have a number of benefits, giving you:
•
•
•
invaluable experience in a busy office of an international firm;
opportunities to apply your academic knowledge in client-facing situations, across different practice areas
of law; and
an opportunity to focus your work experience on the city where you are planning to develop your career.
All year (Year 4 students: ongoing support from Reed Smith)
In your fourth year Reed Smith will continue to support you with advice from their
Graduate Development team, helping you to reach a successful graduation and to move on into your chosen
career.
