Holocaust Remembrance Day The internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. The United States Congress established the Days of Remembrance as our nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust and created the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC as a permanent living memorial to the victims. Volunteer Spotlight: Daryl Sherman Daryl Sherman is the Senior Center’s nominee for the 2014 Community Volunteer Award sponsored by the United Way of Dane County. His nomination is due to his faithful leadership at the Senior Center over many years. He has served on the Senior Center Personnel Leadership Council since 2006 and Co-Chair of the 20102011 Accreditation Team. He presently serves as member and convener of the Senior Center Advisory Council and A Photo Affair Judge in which he served for about 15 years. Daryl devotes time to PLATO (Participatory Learning and Teaching Organization) where he leads a multi-week course on the Civil War each semester. He also volunteers for Olbrich Botanical Gardens and has presented programs for the Olbrich Garden’s docent training series and served as docent for the Bolz Conservatory for more than 8 years. He contributes to activities of Veterans for Peace, establishing the Memorial Mile each Memorial Day to recognize and honor fallen soldiers of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. He was a member of the local arrangements committee that hosted the 2013 National Veterans for Peace Conference in Madison. As a member Madison Friends of International Students program, Daryl enjoys teaching English to students.
