COURSE WEBSITE: www.cappello.pbworks.com OVERVIEW The grade 12 9-1-1 Specialist course will expand upon the topics explored in the grade 11 SHSM program, giving students a chance to refine their existing skills and abilities. Using both familiar and new contexts, students will expand their knowledge of community safety, law enforcement, corrections, security, fire service, and medical service (paramedics) organizations. National agencies will be examined to extend student’s knowledge of Canada’s role in the international emergency services community. Students will extend their research skills, study complex community safety and emergency services theory and practice, and will have the opportunity to enhance their physical fitness, based on emergency services fitness standards. Students will learn to critically analyze the existing concepts, problem solving skills and organizational systems within the community safety and emergency services sector. By undertaking academic projects and research, students will use a variety of research strategies and technologies. Students successful in completing the SHSM and related bundled credits will earn a red seal certification on their OSSD, indicating the successful completion of the Specialist High Skills Major program in Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services. IMPORTANT NOTES Deadlines and Academic Integrity matters will be handled according to SRB, OCDSB and Ministry of Education Assessment and Evaluation policy. Full participation in class, sector certification and experiential learning is mandatory Major papers will use APA (American Psychological Association) notation format.
