OVERVIEW
The grade 12 9-1-1 Specialist course will expand upon the topics explored in the grade 11 SHSM program, giving students a chance to
refine their existing skills and abilities. Using both familiar and new contexts, students will expand their knowledge of community safety,
law enforcement, corrections, security, fire service, and medical service (paramedics) organizations. National agencies will be examined
to extend student’s knowledge of Canada’s role in the international emergency services community.
Students will extend their research skills, study complex community safety and emergency services theory and practice, and will have the
opportunity to enhance their physical fitness, based on emergency services fitness standards. Students will learn to critically analyze the
existing concepts, problem solving skills and organizational systems within the community safety and emergency services sector. By
undertaking academic projects and research, students will use a variety of research strategies and technologies.
Students successful in completing the SHSM and related bundled credits will earn a red seal certification on their OSSD, indicating the
successful completion of the Specialist High Skills Major program in Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services.

National Public Safety Agencies I (Red Cross, Canada Border Services, Canadian Security and Intelligence Service and
Peacekeepers)
Human Relationships and Interpersonal Dynamics (Interviewing Techniques, Negotiation, Investigation, Communication,
Essential Skills/Ontario Skills Passport)
Emergency Services Health and Fitness: (Functions/physiological principles relating to human performance within
community safety and emergency service roles, peak performance in emergency services)

EVALUATION
Students will complete different assignments/evaluations, in either the 4 O, or 4 U track.

In order to demonstrate their learning of course expectations through the course
requirements (evaluations), students will be given frequent assessments so that
they can measure their own progress. Success in this course depends on coming to
class prepared, being attentive and completing all assessments and evaluations.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Deadlines and Academic Integrity matters will be handled according to
SRB, OCDSB and Ministry of Education Assessment and Evaluation policy.
Full participation in class, sector certification and experiential learning is
mandatory
Major papers will use APA (American Psychological Association) notation
format. APA guides will be made available to students.
Students struggling with any aspect of the course should speak with
Mr. Cappello before an evaluation is due.
