Our vapor compression units feature Aqua-Chem’s Spray-Film® technology that generates high heat transfer coefficients while keeping all of the evaporator tube surfaces adequately wet during the evaporation process. This technology allows the operator to easily observe the evaporation process and quickly clean or passivate our units without flooding the evaporator vessel. The vapor compressor is the heart of a vapor compression unit. Aqua-Chem began with two compressor technologies - direct drive for our large units and belt drive for our small units. Our large units today feature low-speed direct drive compressors which have proven to be the most reliable compressors in the industry. With VC evaporators, the majority of energy required is electricity. Evaporated vapor is compressed and the latent heat of vaporization is used to continue the evaporation cycle. As a result, only 40 to 60 Btu of mechanical energy are required for each pound of evaporation. Typical application of Vapor Compression evaporators include the following: • Pharmaceutical/Biotech USP/WFI • Bottled Water • Offshore Desalting and Marine Aqua-Chem’s Unique Spray-Film® VC Process 8 R e p r e s e n tat i v e d i r e c t o r y & d ata c o n v e r s i o n s ta b l e s Basic heat transfer relationship: Q = UAΔT Where: Q = Heat transferred by the condensing vapor U = Overall heat transfer coefficient A = Heat transfer surface area ΔT = Effective temperature difference between condensing vapor & boiling liquid HP / 1000 LB. / HR. It is the potential which will produce a current of 1 ampere through a resistance of 1 ohm. Ampere (I) is the unit of electrical current (coulombs per sec). Ohm (R) is the unit of electrical resistance – volts/ampere. Watts (W) and Kilowatts (KW) are units of electric power. Kilovolt-amperes (KVA) is a measurement of apparent electric power. Kilowatt hour (Kshr) is a unit of electrical energy or work performed. It must always have a positive value and can be calculated by the following equations: To help in visualizing the conditions that exist, two (2) expressions will be used: the first expression is based on a suction lift. Liquid supply level is below the pump centerline or impeller eye. The second expression is based on a positive suction (flooded) where the liquid supply level is above the pump centerline or impeller eye. For Suction Lift: NPSH = Ha - hypa - h st - h fs For Positive (Flooded) Suction: NPSH = ha - hypa + h st - h fs where: h a hypa h st h fs = absolute pressure (in feet of liquid) on the surface of the liquid supply level (this will be barometric pressure if suction is from an open tank or sump; or the absolute pressure existing in a closed tank such as a condenser hotwell or deaerator). = the head in feet corresponding to the vapor pressure of the liquid at the temperature being pumped. = static height in feet that the liquid supply level is above or below the pump centerline or impeller eye. = all suction line losses (in feet) including entrance losses and friction losses through pipe, valves and fittings, etc. Two values of net positive suction head must be considered: i.e. Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHR) and Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHA). 31 AQ UA- C H EM Frequently Used Formulas and Equivalents Velocity: Q = AV or V - Q/A V = 0.4085 gpm - 0.2859 bph - 0.0028368 gpm - 0.001985 bph d2d2D2D2 where: V = velocity of flow – ft/sec Q = capacity – ft3/sec A = area of pipe or conduit – ft2 d = diameter of circular pipe or conduit – inches D = diameter of circular pipe or conduit – feet gpm = U.S. gallons per minute bph = barrels per hour (42 gals–oil) Velocity equivalents: ft/ec x 0.3048 = m/sec m/sec x 3.2808 = ft/sec Fluid flow – any liquid: U.S. gpm x 0.002228 = ft3/sec U.S. gpm x 0.2271 = m3/hr U.S. gpm x 0.227 = metric tons per hour (water) mgd (U.S.) x 694.5 = U.S. gpm ft3/sec x 448.83 = U.S. gpm m3/hr x 4.403 = U.S. gpm U.S. gallon x 0.8327 = Imperial gallons Imperial gallons x 1.201 = U.S. gallons gpm = lb per hr 500 x sp gr gpm = boiler hp x 0.069 Fluid flow – oil: barrels x 42 barrels per hour x 0.7 barrels per day x 0.02917 U.S. gpm x 1.4286 U.S. gpm x 34.286 = U.S. gallons = U.S. gpm = U.S. gpm = barrels per hour = barrels per day Head and pressure: Head in feet = Head in psi x 2.31 sp gr Head in psi = Head in feet x sp gr 2.31 32 R e p r e s e n tat i v e d i r e c t o r y & d ata c o n v e r s i o n s ta b l e s Frequently Used Formulas and Equivalents Pumping Power – 1 horsepower x 550 = ft-lb/sec x 33000 = ft-lb/min x 2545 = BTU/hr x 745.7 = watts x 0.7457 = kilowatts x 1.014 = metric horsepower Brake hp =gpm x H (in feet) x sp gr (centrifugal terminology) 3960 x efficiency =bph x H (in feet) x sp gr (centrifugal terminology) 5657 x efficiency =gpm x psi (reciprocating terminology) 1714 x eff =bph x psi (reciprocating terminology) 2449 x eff Note: To obtain the hyd hp from the above expressions, assume a pump efficiency of 100%.
