Workers own more than 40% of our company (e.g. a worker cooperative or a company that has
significant ownership by non-executive workers)
Our company is a producer cooperative where owners are supplier members who organize production
(e.g. farmer cooperative, artisanal cooperative)
Our company focuses on alleviating poverty through its supply chain, via 1) sourcing through fair wage
certified suppliers or 2) providing technical assistance/capacity building to small-scale suppliers -individuals or cooperatives/companies with fewer than 50 workers, or 3) guaranteeing future purchases

Our company uses a microfranchising or micro-distribution model that provides income generation
opportunities for low-income individuals or individuals from chronically underemployed communities.
Microfranchises have on average fewer than 10 workers, are independently owned and operated, and
distribute products exclusively for the parent company. Microdistribution is a sales and revenue model
that relies on network of individual sellers/retailers for whom the product comprises at least 50% of their
total income.
Our company donates at least 20% of profits or 2% of sales to charity or a non-profit foundation on an
annual basis, or is at least 20% owned by a non-profit.

Other: A confirmed and renewed Business Development Bank of Canada Act, the federal law that enshrines our
mission. This enshrines our mission in a federal law. Answer(s): BDC's board of directors and senior executives

research and compelling arguments that Canada's real economy entrepreneurs needed the support of BDC, and for the
Business Development Bank of Canada to be confirmed and renewed. These arguments won the day and the Act was

Our clients are all real economy SMEs of Canada. Parliament has (again) concluded that the are market failures in the
provision of services that these people need for their businesses. These market gaps are of many kinds, and constantly
changing.
All of the strategic performance indicators in our corporate plan and annual report focus on the breadth, effectiveness
and efficiency of our support for real economy entrepreneurs.
We also judge specific groups or entrepreneurs to merit special focus. For BDC, the notable examples are aboriginal
entrepreneurs, young entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs with social purpose companies. We use
special efforts to reach these groups of people.
Our aboriginal business unit has $209 million in loans to aboriginal businesses. We support young entrepreneurs in a
variety of ways, notably through a pan-Canadian organization, Futurepreneurs. We have recently earmarked $700
million for women entrepreneurs, with a new team to improve how we reach them. And our support for social
entrepreneurs is three-fold: support for new capital market mechanisms that support them, support for grassroots
organizations at which they meet, and direct support to them as clients.
Our most recent foray into serving an underserved group is via a three-year partnership and contribution to the social
enterprise Rise Asset Development. Rise makes small loans to people whose mental health challenges have prevented
them from holding a regular job and who are using a business project to get back on their feet.
