A comprehensive dictionary is Collins, Pons: Deutsch English: English German in Eiche Library Reference No. PF 3640.C64, 1999. A folder to keep all of your work book material, hand-outs, and homework organized. Web page: www.mhhe.com/dnk5 Welcome to German 001 Learning a language is quite different from studying for most other academic disciplines. In addition to learning the facts of a language such as vocabulary, grammar rules, etc., one develops linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Taken together these four skills constitute "fluency", and they are the primary course objectives of German 1-3. You cannot expect to become fluent overnight nor will you learn to speak German by simply listening to me! You need to study intensively – even memorize concepts and scripts - on a regular basis. Then you will easily master the vocabulary and structures in each chapter of Deutsch, na klar!, a textbook designed to achieve communicative competence. Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours of work outside of class for every hour you spend in class. Another objective for this class is to acquaint you with the culture of the German-speaking world. Deutsch, na klar! The Web page www.mhhe.com/dnk5 is used for oral exercises as a complementary to your Deutsch na klar! 5th ed. The World-Wide-Web offers additional information about German culture and especially the new rules for spelling which are in effect since 2000. To enhance your listening to German and speaking German, use the web page as part of your study routine. The web page corresponds to the printed material in your textbook and is marked by a “head set” throughout the textbook. I encourage you to listen and respond at least once a day. Deutsch, na klar! Workbook. Most of your written homework is in this workbook. Please do the exercises first as best as you can, then correct any mistakes by using the answer key in the back of the book. Correct your answers in a different color pencil or pen, so that I can distinguish between your first work and your corrections. The pages of the Workbook will be handed in at my request usually when we reach the end of a chapter in the textbook. Your work will be graded by completion and whether you corrected your work. I will not deduct points for mistakes made the first time, as long as you correct them! German 1, Section 001 Fall 2010 3 Anja K.Wagner Keep in mind these Performance Objectives for German 1: Listening, reading ability, recognizing meaning and usage of all vocabulary through Kapitel 5. 1. Ability to use in simple spoken or written sentences the grammar structures and vocabulary through Kapitel 5. (Introductions, brief conversations, counting, spelling, days of the week, months of the year, holidays, telling time, naming food items, clothing, colors, buying items at a store) 2. Practice German often, even for short periods of time - but remember, regularly. 3. Chose a partner with whom you can practice German outside of the classroom and whom you can contact if you missed an assignment. You will also work with your partner on skits and other assignments. Tests: I will administer weekly quizzes (approximately 10 minutes each) and your lowest 2 grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. There will also be 4 Tests roughly corresponding to the chapters in the book. In addition, there will be 2 Comprehensive Examinations and a Comprehensive Final Examination including Chapters 1-5. Since this class emphasizes the skills of listening and speaking, parts of your comprehensive and final exams will consist of oral exams. These will be conducted individually or with a partner in the form of conversations in my office. Quizzes, Tests, the Comprehensive Examinations, and the Final Examination will not be retested. Homework: Written assignments will be discussed in class. Homework assignments will need to be double–spaced to leave me room for corrections. Assignments need to be handed in at the beginning of class when they are due. You will find folders marked “In” and “Out” in the front of the classroom. You are responsible for placing assigned work in the “In” folder and to retrieve assignments from the “Out” folder. Late assignments will not be accepted. In addition, complete all activities from the Workbook unless I tell you to omit certain exercises. Most of the Workbook assignments will not be discussed or practiced in class. Skits. There will be several skits during the semester which you prepare with your partner/s. I will suggest topics or discuss your own ideas for skits with you. Bring props for the skits. They help you to remember your lines. Please do not read the lines but know them by heart. Course Policies: Bring your textbook and handouts to class. Since this is a language class I expect you to participate in each class by speaking and listening. If you have an emergency or become ill, please notify me as soon as possible. You may miss three classes, additional absences will lower your course grade up to 15%. Class participation is essential! I will frequently ask you to speak with each other in German and to find partners with whom you can practice German outside of the classroom. German 1, Section 001 Fall 2010 4 Anja K.Wagner ACADEMIC INTEGRITY STATEMENT Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open, honest, and responsible manner. Academic integrity is a basic guiding principle for all academic activity at The Pennsylvania State University, and all members of the University community are expected to act in accordance with this principle. Consistent with this expectation, the University's Code of Conduct states that all students should act with personal integrity, respect other students' dignity, rights, and property, and help create and maintain an environment in which all can succeed through the fruits of their efforts. Academic integrity includes a commitment not to engage in or tolerate acts of falsification, misrepresentation or deception. Such acts of dishonesty violate the fundamental ethical principles of the University community and compromise the worth of work completed by others. Consequences of academic dishonesty: The instructor may assign an academic sanction ranging from failure on the assignment to failure in the course. The instructor reports each academic sanction to the Office of Judicial Affairs, which keeps a record. Students can appeal academic sanctions to the Committee on Academic Integrity through the Office of Academic Affairs. In more serious cases of academic dishonesty, the Office of Judicial Affairs may apply disciplinary sanctions in addition to the academic sanctions. These may range from automatic failure for the course to probation, suspension, or expulsion from the University. An "XF" grade is a formal University disciplinary sanction that indicates on the student's transcript that failure in a course was due to a serious act of academic dishonesty. (Policies and Rules for Students, Section 49-20.) In the unexpected event that you need a Deferred Grade (DF), No Grade (NG), or Change of Grade you must request it with complete proper paper work prior the final exam week. The Registrar’s Office will help you. Disability Statement If you need me to modify material or make accommodations for you in the classroom due to a disability, please notify me at the beginning of the semester or as soon as possible. You may also contact the Health & Wellness Center, Disability Services located in the Sheetz Family Health Center. You can call the center at (814) 949-5540 or visit the website at www.altoona.psu.edu/healthwellness.
