y daughter recently sent
me a lengthy article written by an Orthodox Priest
that I found very timely and compelling. It was titled “You Don’t
Have to Like Your Priest,” and I
was going to reprint it in its entirety, but in the interest of space I am
including just the first paragraph: “There are many reasons for you
not to like your priest. It may be because his homilies are too dry, lack
patristic moorings, or stray too far
from the Biblical text. His answers
to your deepest theological, spiritu-
al, and personal challenges may
leave you cold and unsatisfied. He
may be a poor confessor, offering
only absolution and standard responses about “prayer rules”, “forgiveness” and “humility”. He may
not offer the kind of charismatic and
visionary leadership that would inspire your parish to grow. He may
be too ignorant, over-educated,
emotional, impersonal, shy, gregarious, fundamentalist, liberal, political, or dull. Whatever his human
failings, there is sure to be plenty
about him you do not like.” (Fr. Anthony Perkins, Pastor of St.
Michael Ukrainian Orthodox
Church, Woonsocket, RI)
After reading the article, the only
caveat to add is the need to forgive
your Priest. We began our Lenten
journey on the Sunday of Forgiveness and the theme for 40 days has
been consistent. We cannot even
begin to appreciate the depth of
God’s love and forgiveness unless
we forgive each other with humility. As we complete the Great Fast
and journey to Great and Holy
Pascha, may our focus be on His

April 2014 | THE ANNUNCIATION OBSERVER
During a Parish Town Hall Meeting on
March 9, 2014, representatives from The
Build’s Steering and Capital Campaign
Committees presented updates about the
progress of our Parish’s plans to construct
new and sustainable facilities on our existing Annunciation campus. Thanks to the
diligent efforts of our dedicated building
team, we are growing ever closer to
breaking ground in the near future!!
PAGE 4
Mr. Nick Docous and Mr. Dan Eriksson, members
of our architectural team, enthusiastically discussed
new developments in our building process, highlighting that our buildings plans for a new multipurpose
hall, education/administration building, and campus
courtyard had been submitted at the end of 2013 and
are currently under review by the City of Sacramento.
Once we receive the City’s comments on the existing
plans, we can begin to finalize the building designs
and put the project out to our general contractor for
bid. Nick and Dan are hopeful that we could have our
building permit within 2.5 months at the earliest! Nick
and Dan also mentioned two important developments
critical to our building progress: 1) the abandonment

deepest appreciation
and gratitude to all
our generous donors!
My Fellow Parishioners,
With Holy Week and our Lord's glorious Resurrection only weeks away, our efforts and attentions turn to the gift of gifts for all Orthodox Christians.
The gift of eternal life in Christ that God continually shares
with us through His Son. Granting great mercy to the
world. Enjoy this time of increased worship, confession and
almsgiving with joy and hope. Knowing that we are all
members of the Body of Christ.
The March 25th celebration of our feast day and of
Greek Independence Day was indeed a blessing for our
parish. We welcomed His Eminence, Metropolitan
Gerasimos, for Great Vespers, Matins, and Divine Liturgy,
concelebrating throughout with our very own priests as well
as visiting clergy from around the region. It was made even
more special with our choir's wonderful participation at the
Divine Liturgy. All followed by a delicious Lenten luncheon prepared by Faye & Jim Vallas and hosted by members of the parish council. Many thanks to Jim & Faye and
to Sam Manolakas and Kristen Kane who co-chaired the
event. Thank you also to Julie Mamalis for providing
beautiful center pieces and decorations. In remarks to the
faithful, His Eminence urged us to carry out plans to construct the new Hall ( Family Event Center) and Education/
Administration facilities. Stressing the need for courage and
faith in the Lord, during the process. Also underscoring that
not only do we benefit but the next generation will benefit.
Our students of the Greek Education ministry provided a
wonderful "Greek Independence" program and lunch on
Sunday March 23rd. Our gratitude to Dimitra Dogias (Director) and her dedicated staff of instructors for their fine
work.

At the Parish Assembly held March 16th, absentee voting for parish council elections was approved by the members present and is expected to be implemented by the
2014-2015 returning Board of Elections; Andreas Yerocostas, Terre Terzakis, and Nick Kontos. The 2013 financial report was presented along with reports from the Capital Campaign - The Build, ONCD, Stewardship, and the
Endowment Fund. A summary of the Metropolis ClergyLaity conference held at St. Nicholas Ranch was also presented at the gathering.
The Annunciation Choir Crab feed was held March 1st
and was again a very successful evening. Because of their
efforts various improvements to the loft have been identified by choir leaders and the scope of work will be submitted to the parish council. In other church beautification
news the new railings were installed up in the loft and we
are most grateful to the anonymous donor and also to the
estate of Shirley Mihalakos. They look beautiful!! The
painting of the narthex and stairwells should be completed
soon and we thank Peter Pandelopoulos for his kind donation of labor. In addition to that, new interior doors and
hardware have been installed in the narthex. Thank you to
the anonymous donor for their generosity. Deserving of our thanks is Nitsa Dariotis and her steadfast perseverance instituting a "prosforo" baking schedule
for the parish. Thank you also to Donna Wagner and her
assistance with this activity. All are welcome to volunteer
and learn how to make this valuable church necessity.
Finally, over the next several months implementation of
the new Metropolis Strategic Plan which was unveiled at
THE ANNUNCIATION OBSERVER | April 2014
the last Clergy-Laity assembly in February,
will begin to take shape. Each parish priest
and parish council president have been
asked to nominate an "advocate" to work
closely with other Metropolis leaders in
communicating all facets of the plan with
their respective communities. I'm very
pleased to announce that Jim Chuchas has
accepted this appointment pending the
blessing of our Metropolitan. Jim will have
the complete support of the parish council
and we thank him again. This Strategic
Plan will benefit both clergy and laity alike
when fully implemented and I ask for all to
endorse it. You may view the plan in detail
by going to the Metropolis website.
May the remainder of the journey
through Great Lent be a blessed one for
you and your families and may we all truly rejoice in His Glorious Resurrection.
Sincerely in Christ,

Booknotes from the
Bookstore
Because inquiring minds deserve to know, we still do
not have a timeline for the Bookstore moving into a modular unit (the Trailer). But Lou has been working with Dan
Erikkson acquiring permits for the unit to be put next to
the Parish Office so we will be good to go when the buildings starts. Meanwhile, we’ve been putting in a few plants
to cheer the Bookstore up a bit for spring and Pascha as we
wait.
By now you are all well into your Lenten reading and
reflections but I do have one other book to recommend; a
devotional for Holy Week, Meditations For Holy Week:
Dying and Rising with Christ, by Vassilios Papavassiliou.
While Papavassiliou’s work
focuses on Holy week, we are
reminded that Holy Week
does not stand alone. It follows Great Lent with the
themes in the latter part of
Great Lent continuing into
the first half on Holy Week.
All the reading and introspection we do during Great Lent
is preparation for Christ’s
death and resurrection that
we experience in Holy Week.
But you knew that. Meditiations for Holy Week is most
informative and a wonderful
spiritual aid, nourishment if you will, to assist us in our
prayer life during Holy Week. And, it’s an easy read! "
The Bookstore does have the traditional Greek red food
dye for coloring easter eggs but I have to say that not too
many of us have been successful using it. Most of us, and
our Church, use Rit Scarlet liquid dye. I know it is not
healthy so I am not recommending this per se but some of
us have been eating our red eggs for decades and we are still
around to tell of all those years of Pascha with red easter
eggs. If you are squeamish, come into the Bookstore and we
can give you a recipe for dying eggs with red onion skins.
Vasso Meyer, who dyes the eggs for our Church, is also a
great resource or we can also tell you how we use the Rit.
The Bookstore has two delightful Children’s books regarding the tradition of red easter eggs, one called Easter
Eggs for Anya, by Virginia Kroll, and a new release for
Pascha called, The Miracle of the Red Egg, by Elizabeth
Crispina Johnson and illustrated
by Daria Fisher.
There is a great article too online
about Easter eggs written by Rev.
Nicon D. Patrinacos that is well
worth reading to your family if you
can pull it up.
I only knew of Easter eggs as a
Christian symbol - such as the egg
rolling contests children have to
symbolize the rolling away of the
stone from Christ’s tomb. Easter eggs are a Christian symbol but Rev. Patrinacos describes the history of the egg as
a symbol even in mythology such as Helen being born
from an egg and falling from the moon. He continues,
“However, even though the Easter egg is obviously
not an exclusive Christian introduction, its significance
relates to the birth not of material life but to that spiritual experience enjoyed only in the life of Christ. Its
symbolic adaptation to the events of Christ's sacrifice
on the Cross, His entombment, and finally His breaking
of the bondage of death by His Resurrection, all find a
fitting expression to the Easter egg. The red color of the
Orthodox Easter egg signifies the blood of Christ, its
shell His three-day entombment, and its breaking His
Resurrection by which the 'egg of life' brought forth a
life, up to then unknown. The cracking of the red eggs
among Orthodox symbolizes a mutual wish for breaking one's bonds of sin and misery and for entering the
new life issuing from Christ's Resurrection.”
May you all have a Very Spiritually Enriched Pascha!
Love in Christ,
Marilyn Demas

Book Club Report
Sewing Circle
Prayer Shawl Ministry
The Annunciation Book Club meets
on Wednesdays at 1 pm, every other
week in the Annunciation Bookstore.
Our next meeting, at this writing, will
be March 26th so plan accordingly. We
are sure that there will be changes for
Pascha so look for updates in the
Church Bulletin.
We are currently reading The Vine
Speaks by Cindy Steinbeck. Yes, she
is a (distant) relative of “the” John
Steinbeck of Grapes of Wrath. And,
she is also owner of Steinbeck Winery
in Pasa Robles which belonged to her
parents before her. The book is an
analogy to Christ’s words, “I am the
Vine and you are the branches...”
While the message of the branches
abiding in Christ the Vine and He in
the branches, us, often seems redundant, by using numerous pointers of
grape cultivation analogous to Christ’s
nurturing and sustaining us as we
abide in Him, Steinbeck deftly keeps
ones interest. She also adds touching
anecdotal details of her own life supporting her message of Christ’s life
giving and life sustaining ways. The
book is a very up lifting, easy, fast
paced read which we are all enjoying.
You are always welcome to join us.
We’d love your company!
The Sewing Circle’s recently donated twenty two blankets to Project
Linus were distributed to the Elk
Grove Food Bank and Family Services this month . For those of you
who are unfamiliar with Project Linus, Project Linus is a national organization of primarily women , nationally we do have some men on
board, who knit, crochet, quilt,
weave, or make fleece blankets
mainly for children ages infancy
through adolescence who are living
in a crisis situation. Our Annunciation Sewing Circle has participated
for more than two years now. As our
dedicated ladies will tell you, “This
is truly a labour of love”. If you have
spare time and like to create blankets
and hats, please join us. Drop off
finished items at the Bookstore between 10:00 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays [except Mondays] and Saturdays but after Liturgy on Sundays.
We do have a dedicated core of people with busy, loving hands, but the
need is great and on going so we can
always use more workers. Also, if
you can’t knit, etc. and would like to
learn, again come to the Bookstore
on Tuesdays and or Thursdays and
we can teach you. This Lenten season our Prayer
Shawl Ministry did not call for knitters
and crocheters to make more prayer
shawls during Lent because we currently have sufficient prayer shawls on
hand for another month or so. Many
prayer shawls were distributed to most
of our Church’s homebound parishioner’s in December.
"
That said, if you would like to make
a Prayer Shawl, we do have yarn at the
Bookstore for you to do so. Actually,
our next Prayer Shawl Blessing will be
in the autumn. For those of you not
acquainted with the Prayer Shawl Ministry, our ladies pray as we make
Prayer Shawls for people who are rejoicing, or who may be in need of
comfort, that God will wrap them in
His love and care. If you are interested in participating
in this Ministry, please inquire at the
Bookstore and we show you, and explain it more succinctly than I just did.
Bottom line, we can always use more
loving hands!

April 2014 | THE ANNUNCIATION OBSERVER
From the Choir
Archives
On behalf of the choir, I would like to thank the community once again for supporting our annual Choir Crab
Feed. A parishioner asked me very interesting question,
“How did the Choir Crab Feed come to be?” As I thought
about it, I, wondered who would know the answer to this
question? Ah ha! Let me check with our seniors. Here is
what they remembered.
Sacramento Crab Feeds popped up in the late 70’s and
early 80’s. They were used as fundraisers for many organizations such as the Elks and Optimist clubs, as well
as for Catholic Schools. As they gained popularity,
parishioners in the Annunciation Parish thought it was a
good idea to try out this new moneymaker.
In the early 80’s, Philoptochos members Kay Georgallis and Mary Skordakis chaired the 1st Annunciation
crab feed in order to raise money for the establishment
of St. Nicholas Ranch. Since Perry Georgallis and his
partner, Frank Bianchini, were already doing crab feed
fundraisers, they offered their talents for this worthy
cause. With Frank’s special pasta sauce and cooking
skills and Perry’s wonderful charm, the Annunciation
Crab Feed was born! Perry, Tom Manikas and Jim
Makris also cooked for St. Katherine in Elk Grove to
assist them in their first crab feed during those early
years.
Parishioner Tony Psihopaidas, who was working for
Frank, wanted to learn the “tricks of the trade” so Tony
assisted Frank for several years as Frank and his brother
worked on numerous crab feeds in the area, specifically
All Hallows Church and the Elks Club, and the first Annunciation Choir Crab Feed. Tony and his parents, Jim
and Helen, assisted the choir for several years by continuing their magic in our church kitchen, and, of course,
perfecting the “special pasta sauce”!!
There have been many committees and volunteers who
have kept these efforts going over the years, not only for
our choir crab feed , but for other parochial and fraternal
events as well. Crab feeds have become a stable fundraiser for these groups. So, if you are looking for a fresh crab
dinner (in season), check with your favorite restaurant or
neighborhood church/organization.

“The Greeks on the Road to World War I”
In honor of the 100 year anniversary of World War I, the Hellenic Studies Program at Sacramento State
University is organizing an exhibit and lecture series on this historic conflict. “The Greeks on the Road to
World War I” will highlight the parallel journey of the Greeks both in the United States and Greece as their
respective countries enter the war. This exhibit will begin with images of life in Athens at the turn of the
twentieth century and end with the Paris Peace Conference. We will highlight individual Greek combatants
who participated in fighting for the Greek and American military. Overall, this exhibit will emphasize the significant contributions of the Greeks in this ’war to end all wars’.
April 1—26, 2014
Tuesday—Saturday, 10:00 am—5:00 pm
University Library Gallery, Annex Gallery
