Name _________________________ WHMIS in Your Workplace Online Training Program If you are studying at home or in a classroom, you may not be able to complete this part of the training program until you can look at the labels and MSDSs in your own workplace. In that case, go ahead and write the test. It’s time to find out how WHMIS applies to you and your job. There are no points or scores given for this section. It’s for your own information, to see if you can identify hazardous materials (controlled products) in your workplace and find the safety information you need from WHMIS labels and material safety data sheets (MSDSs). Take this sheet and a pen or pencil with you and make sure you have permission to go into the work area. You might want to team up with another person if you’ve decided to search out products in a place that’s not very familiar to you, like a storeroom. Controlled Products The first thing to do is identify a few hazardous materials. If they’re classified as controlled products under WHMIS, they’ll have supplier labels with a cross-hatched border, or perhaps smaller workplace labels like the one you made for Strip-n-All. Some could be identified in other ways. WHMIS Supplier Label Border List the names of some of the controlled products you found: _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ Hazard Symbols Which hazard symbols did you see on the supplier labels? (Check all that apply.) ___ Compressed Gases ___ Immediate and Serious Toxic Effects ___ Flammable/Combustible ___ Other Toxic Effects ___ Oxidizing ___ Biohazardous/Infectious ___ Corrosive ___ Dangerously Reactive © 2014. Make sure it has a supplier label. Supplier Label What is the name of the product you chose, as it appears on the supplier label? ________________________________________________________________________ Is there a French WHMIS label on the container as well? ___ YES ___ NO What hazards are shown by the symbol or symbols on the supplier label? ________________________________________________________________________ What is one precaution you should take when using the product? ________________________________________________________________________ What is one first aid measure that applies to this product? ________________________________________________________________________ What is the supplier’s name? ________________________________________________________________________ Workplace Label If you were to transfer some of this product to another container, you’d need a workplace label. What information would you include? (Fill in the box on the right.) There are instructions for making a workplace label on your WHMIS poster. Workplace Identifiers Is there a situation where another type of identification such as a sign, a numbered symbol or a colour code is used to identify a hazardous product? The product might be: • in a pipe or piping system • produced for sale but not yet labelled • in a tank • used in a laboratory • intended for disposal (hazardous waste) • on a conveyor belt • in a process vessel If so, describe the product, the situation and the type of identification used. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ © 2014. All rights reserved. WHMIS in Your Workplace 3 MSDS Now you need to look at the material safety data sheet for your sample product. If you can’t find it, ask your supervisor. MSDSs do not have to be in a particular format. The information might be in a different order or appear with different category names, so your MSDS might not look the same as the Acetone and Strip-n-All MSDSs you saw earlier. Remember that the online glossary contains definitions of many terms you’ll find on an MSDS, and you can print the glossary from the Resources tab. Where is the MSDS for this product kept? ________________________________________________________________________ Is the product name on the MSDS exactly the same as the product name on the label? (It should be identical.) ___ YES ___ NO The product is hazardous: (Check all that apply) ___ to the eyes ___ to the skin ___ by ingestion (swallowing) ___ by inhalation Are there any special instructions for extinguishing a fire involving this product? If so, what are they? ________________________________________________________________________ What personal protective equipment is recommended in order to use this product safely? ________________________________________________________________________ Are there any exposure limits (e.g., TLV-TWA, PEL or STEL) on the MSDS? If so, list one. ________________________________________________________________________ Is this product incompatible or reactive with any other materials? If so, name one. ________________________________________________________________________ Has the toxicity of the product been tested? If so, give an example of the LD50 or LC50. ________________________________________________________________________ On what date was the MSDS prepared? (It should be within the past three years, or else the supplier must verify in writing that the information is still correct.) ________________________________________________________________________ © 2014.
