General Guidelines for Homework
1. The homework is not intended to be a test, but rather a tool to help you learn the material in
the course. It is fine to consult with other students when you are doing homework, but the work
submitted must be your own, and should not be copied from another individual’s work. You can
come and talk to me for help with homework as much as you need, during my office hours.
2. Be sure to write your name on the cover page.
3. Write neatly and legibly and be logical in your presentation. The homework assignments, as
well as your answers on exam questions, constitute transactions you are conducting with the
person who will grade them. Your objective is to convince that person that you know how to
solve the problem correctly, and provide the correct answer when one is required. When you
obtain intermediate results on the way to the solution of the problem, be sure to report them,
always with the correct units. If you like, you can place important intermediate results and the
final result in boxes so that it will be easy for the person grading your work to spot them.
4. Be sure to pay attention to significant digits when dealing with numerical problems. If a
variable is given with too little precision, you have to use your engineering judgment to estimate
how many significant figures to assume in that value. Even though the magnitude of some
entities is given superficially with only one significant figure, such magnitudes can be measured
with more precision. An example is the thickness of a material, which may be given as 1 cm .
Typically, a value like this would be known to at least two, and commonly three, significant
figures. So, the magnitude of the thickness should be taken to be 1.00 ×10−2 m . In general, in
engineering calculations, three significant figures would be reasonable to use.
5. Whenever you use a computer program/software to solve a problem, you should make a
printout of the relevant pages/graphs and submit the printout with your solution of that problem.
6. Staple or otherwise combine the pages into one bundle. Do not hand in loose sheets.
7. Late homework will not be accepted. You need to remember to bring your homework with
you when you come to class on the due date.
