Expectations
French is an interesting language to learn,
but in order for everyone to be
successful, a few classroom expectations
need to be followed. First and foremost,
French must be spoken at all times. In
order to truly learn and understand a
language, it is important to immerse
yourself in it as much as possible. This
rule will be difficult to follow at first, but it
is important to try. The French classroom
will be the place to learn and expand your
knowledge of the French language. Merci
beaucoup.
1. Speak French at all times.
2. Be respectful of yourself, others, and
school property.
3. Work to the best of your ability in
class and when completing assignments.
4. Be helpful to others who may need
assistance.
5. Always come prepared to class.

We will be reading a play called L’arbre ungali as we study
the vocabulary, gestures, songs, and dances that accompany
it. L’arbre ungali is about a group of animals living in
Africa. In the story, it has not rained for a very long
time.
When the animals finally figure out how to solve the drought, each
animal runs into trouble. Stay tuned to find out if they can solve the problem.
You will have the opportunity to work individually, in partners, in small groups,
and as a whole class. Students will be evaluated in oral, reading, and writing.

Our play is called Le bistro des animaux. This story is an
amusing story about a group of animals that cannot get
along. With the help of our old friend, Louis la grenouille,
the animals work together to build a café where they can
sing and dance together. In the end, the animals realize that
being different is not only a good thing, but it allows them to accomplish great
things together. This year, we will expand our vocabulary using the Gesture
Approach. Students will have a greater opportunity to use language in a creative

way and develop their oral storytelling skills. Learning the refinements of the
language begins to take a larger role at this stage of the program. The students
will be expected to begin to identify and self-correct targeted grammatical
elements in order to be prepared for grade 8 and high school. Students will be
evaluated in oral, reading, and writing.

Hello grade 5 students. I will be coming
to your room every Friday during first
period this year. In art class in term 1, we
will be using the elements of design
(colour, line, shape and form, space, value,
and texture) in order to communicate
messages, ideas, and understandings.
Please be sure to have pencils, an eraser,
glue (stick and white), crayons, pencil
crayons, scissors, and a ruler for class.
This year, we will be studying Veux-tu danser? which is a
play about students getting ready to go to the school dance.
Sylvie sets out to find a friend who is beau, grand, et fort.
After finding what she thinks she is looking for in a friend,
she realizes that exterior looks and certain physical
qualities are not as important as what is on the inside. By means of this play, we
will continue to expand our knowledge of very important high-frequency
vocabulary through the kinesthetic Gesture Approach, develop our reading and
writing skills, and improve our oral fluency. There will be more opportunities to
use language in a creative way and to further develop oral storytelling skills. A
greater focus on grammar will take place at this stage of the program in order
to prepare for high school. Students will be evaluated in oral, reading, and
writing.
