Right about now, Southern California is at it’s very best and Orange County turns into one big beach party, seven days a week. Now is the time that we truly enjoy the California lifestyle that we as designers work so hard to create for our clients. Outdoor dining and entertaining is at it’s pinnacle, summer guests come and go, and open house gatherings are an almost nightly festivity. Watching everyone indulge and enjoy fills my head with ideas and inspiration of how to design for my clients and deliver the experience year round. The same can be said for our chapter and the exciting events that will take place in the coming months. This summer we celebrate our first ever designer challenge event “Design & Desserts” - a partnership with Stonemill Design Center and Riviera Magazine. Our June general meeting will feature a “state of the union address” from ASID National Executive Vice President and CEO Randy Fiser, which is sure to intrigue and inspire. Our design awards competition is under way and will honor outstanding design by our incredibly talented designer membership. In September, our newly elected slate of leaders will be sworn into office at what is shaping up to be an amazing night of recognition and celebration. So how do we keep the party going? Well, the recipe is simple. Engage, participate, and contribute. It is the same recipe that has placed us on our current course of growth and success. Our membership has increased and we are fourth in the nation with a member retention rating of 89.1 percent. That means that more OC design professionals are seeing value in membership and joining. It also means that more of our existing members are renewing to enjoy the programs and resources that ASID membership offers. It is truly an honor to be a part of such an influential and forward thinking team of design professionals and I thank each and every one of you for doing your part to help make Orange County the life of the party. Keep up the good work! Cheers. I'm sure all of you are beginning to really feel the business climate shift as we find our schedules filling up with new client meetings and hopefully landing new projects. I am also very excited that my term as Chapter President will begin in a few short months. The next Board of Directors will soon be sworn in and a new year of activity commences. The Strategic Planning Committee met last month and I would love nothing more than to have a full group of Committee Chairs in place to oversee all the important events we have planned for the year. If you are interested in being a part of the team , please let me know. You can contribute in ways big or small, but either way the rewards are large: including the opportunity to put forth new ideas, develop friendships among the team and to help our Chapter succeed. Speaking of success, we are moving forward with our efforts on the Legislation front. Thank you to those of you who wrote letters to the local Representatives. We have a ways to go yet, but progress continues to be made. This month also marks the Chapter Leaders Forum which will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where the Dwell on Design Conference and Exhibition is taking place. ASID National puts on this amazing forum to help your incoming Board of Directors learn how better to serve in their roles as chapter leaders. We will certainly put in place all that we learned in the coming fiscal year. Enjoy your summer! Welcome back to Ask Pat, thank you for taking a few minutes to stop by. What a busy couple of months we have had in our state! Your team of volunteers on the Board of Directors at IDCC has been hard at work! Our primary focus has been working with the lobbyists, ASID and IIDA to craft language submitted to the Legislature to strengthen the existing interior design law. As of this writing, the Sunset Review process has been voted out of the Senate Business and Professions Committee and is moving to Appropriations then will head to the Assembly Business and Professions Committee where they will review amendments made to the current interior design law as part of this process. At that time, additional language changes will be submitted by IDCC through their lobbyists. Keep up with current developments: check your email and the IDCC website www.idc-ca.org. Please click on “email signup” if you need to be added to our e-blast list. IDCC’s Annual Meeting was held at the C.J. Welch Showroom in the San Francisco Design Center on May 10; thank you to Chris for your hospitality! Elections for the Board will be held in late June, stay tuned for an email to our members for the voting process. Not a member? Click “JOIN NOW” on our website. Two ASID Chapter meetings focused on the legislative process earlier this year. In January, the San Diego Chapter hosted a Legislative Meeting featuring a great speaker: Nathan Fletcher, former Assemblyman. Nathan shared many great insights with us regarding the legislation and how to work with all aspects of the Senate and Assembly process of passing a bill into law. Following Nathan Fletcher’s talk; he joined myself, David Rance, ASID (and IDCC’s Director of Membership) and Jeff Hollander, AIA, IIDA on a panel to describe and discuss the current Sunset Review process which CCIDC is undergoing this legislative season. We had members of IIDA and NKBA join in the discussion that evening: it was a great conversation! March found another panel speaking before a packed gathering of designers of the Orange County Chapter, hosted at the Jonathan Adler showroom. This time the panel was all IDCC: myself, David Rance, Susan Coddington, IIDA (IDCC Director at Large) and was emceed by Adriel Cogdal, ASID (IDCC Director of Fundraising). Great questions were asked and the enthusiasm for the recognition of our profession was fantastic; thank you Orange County. If your chapter has hosted a legislative chapter meeting, I would love to report about it here. That's what ASID OC March General Meeting was all about! An informative panel discussion on legislation took place at the fun and colorful Jonathan Adler showroom in Fashion Island, Newport Beach. The ASID group of designers, students, and industry partners were the first to see the new collection and newly remodeled showroom. It was the first day of Spring and the beautiful pieces at the showroom made the evening even more refreshing! A real eye candy is this place! And speaking of yummy, how could anyone not smile at the delicious brownie bites wrapped tastefully in JA ♥ ASID papers?! We love you too, JA! Our very own Adriel Cogdal moderated a panel discussion regarding the Interior Design Coalition of California's current legislation presented by David Rance, ASID, Patricia Weiss, ASID, and Susan Coddington, IIDA. The evening ended with five awesome raffle prizes that were specially signed by Mr. Adler himself for the event. There was also a sixth prize that was auctioned as a fundraiser for IDCC. And who could have guessed that one lucky person would win both the grand raffle prize and the IDCC prize?! Definitely not me! I would like to thank Arielle Trop, Jodi Wojdak And her JA team for hosting a great event, as well as our knowledgable panel, and of course Kerry Anderson of Audiovision for all the AV help. CEU Requirement Increase – Effective January 1, 2014 The ASID Board of Directors approved an increase of required CEUs for all members in the Allied, Professional and Associate categories. Currently, ASID has the lowest CEU requirement (0.6) among the organizations representing the built environment. Raising CEU requirements brings ASID in line with its industry peers and expands member knowledge. Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the CEU requirement will increase from 0.6 to 1.0 (i.e., 10 hours). Note that this does not affect the current reporting period, requiring 0.6 CEUs by Dec. 31, 2013. The first reporting period with the new 1.0 CEU requirement will begin January 1, 2014 and end on Dec. 31, 2015. ASID is also expanding eligible CEUs making it easier to reach 1.0. Approved CEUs such as webinars and chapter events will continue, with the addition of activities such as authoring a book or article, keynote speaking engagements, receiving tenure and more. Student Representative to the Board, Ashley Salzmann, chaired the event. Sherwin Williams generously donated paint and supplies. After more than two months of planning and preparation and a week of frenzied installation on April 13th,, four local participating design schools, Westwood, Art Institute, Interior Design Institute, and Saddleback, revealed their design magic at four Salvation Army locations in Tustin, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and San Clemente. Designs were left in place for the following two weeks for public viewing and a silent auction. Students competed using materials gathered from Salvation Army donations, design ingenuity and some serious “elbow grease” to create a room of their own choosing and theme. Used and discarded items are “transformed” and given new purpose. CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER | SUMMER 2013 | 17 STUDENT CORNER The Art Institute The Spring quarter at The Art Institute of California-Orange County is slipping away, with the Interior Design Club involved in all kinds of activities. Being lucky enough to draw I Love Lucy as the subject matter for their entry into the IIDA Fashion Show made the preparations for the event a blast! Our students enjoyed working on this year’s Noah’s Arc competition as well, working on a nature-inspired room in between their participation in the IIDA Design Charrette, creating an interior design department quilt, holding a Jamba Juice fund-raiser, and hosting speakers on nutrition, Kirei’s green products and an alumni panel event including Jocelyn Wang, one of Boutique Design magazine’s Boutique 18, the yearly roster of on-the-rise hospitality designers. We were all happy to see her again and proud that she is making her mark in the industry. To relieve some of the stress of midterms, the group even hosted yoga classes open to any students needing to stretch and release their anxiety. With changes in the campus structure, our department is now under the Design department umbrella, and this is creating some fun opportunities for crossdepartmental projects with Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Advertising, Photography, and Web Design and Interactive Media. The last project involved Nirve Bicycles of Huntington Beach, where our first year students created a new office design for the company, alongside bicycle designs from Industrial and advertising campaigns created by students from the other groups. The summer ahead will be spent working on a similar project with Peak Sports. It’s been great to work side by side with other groups at school – everyone has learned something new from the collaborations. Our students who are closer to graduation are completing their internships all over Southern California, and are looking forward to the Portfolio Show, which has being held at SoCo’s Chuck Jones Center. We will miss their daily presence, but we know they’ll be back! Interior Designers Institute The IDI student chapter has provided magnificent experiences for our student members. With the student chapter growing, a private home tour, Icon of Design Speaker Series and fundraising events are among the exciting opportunities available for our students. In March, IDI’s ASID student chapter held a VIP private home tour. The custom home was located in the elite neighborhood of Crystal Cove in Newport Beach. This one of a kind experience provided hands on experience and one on one knowledge for the students. Present at the event were the home owners, designer Jeanette Kyser , landscape architect and contractor. This was a remarkable event for IDI and our ASID student chapter. Over the quarter break, four IDI students participated in The Salvations Army’s Noah’s ARC Fundraiser. They designed a nursery comprised with goods provided 100% by The Salvation Army. With a little TLC and hard work, these four students successfully transformed old and neglected items into fantastic and desirable pieces. We are proud to announce that these four students, Rachel Bingham, Pavitra Prabhakar, Katherine Depew and Genevieve Chamblis won Noah’s ARC Best Display Award for 2013. IDI is holding a speaker series called Icons of Design. Sheldon Harte of Harte Brownlee and Wendi Young of Wendi Young Design, both award winning designers specializing in high-end residential design, will be speaking. In addition, also speaking are David and Andrea Krumins of Davis Ink., the visionaries behind numerous award winning, successful nightclubs, restaurants and hotels. This is an event that can’t be missed! Saddleback College This Spring has been a fun-filled semester for the Saddleback College department of Interior Design! On the top of our SCIDC list of well worthy recognitions, is the big impact that team “The Golden Girls’” made at the IIDA Haute Couture event when their vibrant fashion designs were modeled on the runway. Congratulations on your first place award team leader Amanda Anis, Amanda Peterson, Blanca Veron, and Noel Puga; you have filled the room with excitement! Thumbs up as well go to the Industrial-Bohemian Outdoor Space vignette that was designed by our students for the Noah’s ARC Challenge. Their talent was showcased in their repurposing skills, as well as in their creative concept. The team Leader and SCIDC president, Kim Schwing, said that they all gained an incredible and bonding experience raising money for the Salvation Army cause. On an academic note, Saddleback College granted its Part- Time Professor Of The Year Award to our dedicated Interior Design teacher, Farida Gabdrakhmanova, ASID, CID, LEED AP ID+C. Farida, is an all- 18 | SUMMER 2013 | CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER time valued Interior Design alumni of S.C. who, along with other colleagues, is very active in regards of the quality of teaching to help ensure the students a professional future full of exposure and wealth of knowledge. Thinking outside the box, she recently dedicated a workshop event called “My Room, My Style” for high school students who wish to join next year, thus promoting the I.D. department. She also assigned her Lighting Class students to design their own fixtures and has scheduled a field trip to the Lighting Innovations Showroom at L.D.C., giving the students a direct opportunity to explore and to present their projects in a specialized environment. Her professional perseverance is greatly appreciated! SCIDC monthly meetings welcomed presentations from Rick Campos - President of ASID-OC, Stephanie Cardon - Pinterest presentation, Tina Isgro – IDEX Q&A, Judi Randal – Las Vegas HD Expo, and Professor Farida Gabdrakhmanova – Portfolio & Resume Presentation. STUDENT CORNER Westwood College Anaheim With the weather warming up, Westwood’s ASID Chapter swings into gear. The group has become more active than ever in attending events and entering competitions. Currently, the chapter is planning a trip to the GO PRO/ LA and Dwell on Design Expo in Los Angeles after a successful trip to Los Vegas attending the Hospitality Design Expo. In April, the Noah’s ARC Project was completed, Sponsored by ASID and the Salvation Army. Westwood completed their Rhythmic Chic Vignette using solely repurposed and refinished donated goods. This room, inspired by the flair of rock-androll with modern touches of color and elegance, sent Westwood College home with the “Best Representation of Theme” Award. The Noah’s ARC Design Competition brought the ASID Chapter together as the project progressed. This experience has lifted the moral and focus of the ASID members and Interior Design students as a whole. Student Rep Message With this successful project completed, the Westwood College ASID Chapter is excited to continue to attend events, competitions, and expositions. Westwood’s ASID Student Chapter would like to thank and recognize the following for their help, and support: ASID Student Rep. Industry Partner and Publisher for your ASID Chapter Newsletter support your industry partner advertisers TO THE TRADE For Advertising Information By Ashley Salzmann, Student ASID, 2012-2013 ASID OC Student Rep to the Board Spring 2013 was a flurry of activity and design inspiration! We kicked off the season with ASID OC’s annual Trade Show at the OC County Fairgrounds. Students were able to peruse the latest and greatest in design trends and listen to educated speakers regarding the state of the design industry. In February, ASID OC hosted an informative session, Student Career Day, at the Laguna Design Center where students were treated to a day of design. Several ASID designers sat on a panel and fielded questions from eager students and several of the showrooms gave guided tours and educational information about how to utilize the center. All eyes and ears then turned to the fourth annual Noah’s ARC Design Competition, an event co-sponsored by the Salvation Army ARC (Adult Rehabilitation Center) where four teams from four local design colleges transformed interior spaces using only repurposed and refurbished items from the Salvation Army. We’re proud to announce that this year showcased the best and brightest upcoming designers in Orange County and their gorgeous vignettes certainly did not disappoint! With the spring months behind us and the lazy days of summer on the horizon, we turn to events such as graduation, as many ASID students prepare the transition from classroom to workroom. This past May, the famed Hospitality Design Expo in Las Vegas attracted a myriad of eager students, designers, and vendors. Students were also featured during May’s ASID OC General Meeting where they enjoyed free one-on-one portfolio reviews with ASID esteemed designers! This June, The ASID + Dwell on Design Convention—which highlights the latest in modern design—will take place just up the road in Los Angeles. We look forward to the exciting contributions to the design community the summer will surely bring, not to mention the beautiful, balmy SoCal weather! We expect the students will return in the fall refreshed and eager to begin another new academic year! 972-562-6966 INDUSTRY PARTNER adinfo@dsapubs.com Quality Interior and Exterior Painting Fine Wood Finishing and Restoration Wall Finishes and Wall Textures Decorative Faux Finishes INDUSTRY PARTNER CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER | SUMMER 2013 | 19 April General Meeting By Nazgol Seyedi, Allied ASID 2012-2013 ASID OC Programs Co-Chair ASID OC General Meeting took place at Purcell Murray Showroom and Education Center in Huntington Beach. Anita Jacobi, owner of JCW along with Joseph Aldrich, arranged for a fun night including a wonderfully displayed buffet of edible delights awaiting us as we entered and were welcomed at the door. There was plenty of room for mixing with our fellow members throughout the showroom as we made our way to an overflowing wine bar…! We didn’t go without a plate of food, glass of wine, bottle of water or dessert all evening! Nazgol Sayedi, Allied ASID, Co-Chair of Programs asked if any students brought their portfolios for review and one student did bring her presentation which was shared upstairs! Emerging Professionals Update By Lori Michelle, Allied ASID 2013-2013 ASID OC Emerging Professionals Chair On May 10th Wendi Young of Wendi Young Designs was gracious enough to open her doors for our second Emerging Professionals meeting for 2013. Wendy opened her doors up to a fantastic and curious full house of designers that could not wait to hear Wendi speak. Everyone had a great time at the cocktail hour that Wendi provided in her beautiful design studio which gave everyone an opportunity to share stories and network before hearing Wendi speak. During Wendi’s speech she was open and warm revealing her experiences, her challenges and how she overcomes the dilemmas of running a successful design firm. With plenty of time for a Q and A session at the end, Wendi offered up free flowing advice on “the business side” of the “interior design business. Everyone walked away a little bit more enthusiastic, knowledgeable and armed for the next step or challenge in facing their own design dilemma in the business of interior design, Thank you Wendi for a successful evening! Our incoming President, Deirdre Eagles then began the evening by announcing the Riviera magazine’s sponsored designer challenge event called Design & Desserts being held at The Stonemill Design Center on June 6th. Then our host, Anita Jacobi, who briefly introduced her drapery and upholstery workroom services and staff, Renee Garcia and Elizabeth Bradford. I then took the microphone and mediated the panel discussion whose topic was called “The Modern Home” which featured local industry leaders in the field of lighting, automation and the latest trends in home automation, Joel Perham of Slewhouse, Inc., Vern Dittloff of Décor Electric, Inc. and Paul Fernandez of Lightopia. Each panelist discussed his viewpoint on the trending subject in detail from their own project experience while sharing photos from their portfolios. We then held a Q & A for important questions from our members. A lizard happened to come in the open showroom door during the discussion and stirred us up, but alas, one our design members, Cynthia Steinberg, captured it and sent him on his way outside! We’d like to give a very special thanks to Anita Jacobi and her workroom staff for treating us to a delightful evening including great raffle prizes which included 2 sets of pillows and a $250 gift certificate from JCW! Our panelists also contributed to the raffle prizes and Joel Perham gave away a bottle of Veuve Cliquot, Vern Dittloff gave away a ceiling light fan and Paul Fernandez gave away a Starbuck’s gift card! Once again, a big thanks goes out to Kerry Anderson of Audio Visions for setting up the AV equipment for our panel. 22 | SUMMER 2013 | CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER M ar rn e R ) ya (W ENTE H R 20 O 1 LE 3 SA LE n R EL SS D W JE LA O G Y W n ga Lo y rr Te bs C om C er og R SO ly ie K a ar C t 2- 4 FO M A ci RT ye FA n SH IO gu N y m Fr us an A ug E R TU n S IC M Sa FI A N N W EA sc o R A B LE S O A R L NI ER C BE TA R E FU M See what makes us unique: đƫƫƫw+.'ƫb5ƫ)+r!ƫ0$*ƫ2ăĀƫ+"ƫ0$!ƫc+1*0.5’sƫ ƫƫƫƫ0opƫc+*0!),+r.5ƫ)kers đƫƫ1s0+)ƫc+))%s/%+*%*#ƫ* ƫc+*/%#*)!*0ƫ ƫƫƫƫ+,,+.01*%0%!s đƫƫ+)!ƫ3%0$ƫy+1.ƫ,ro"es/%+*(ƫ$0ƫ* ƫs05ƫ3%0$ ƫƫƫƫy+1.ƫ,!./+*(ƫ$0ƫ0+ƫ/$+,ƫ 1.%*#ƫ0$!ƫr!0%(ƫ,+.0%+* ƫƫƫƫ+"ƫ+1.ƫ/$ow.ƫ $20 buyer registration includes: đƫƫTw+ƫ1y!.ƫ #!s đƫƫx(1/%v!ƫ3$+(!/(!ƫ/$+,,%*#ƫ"r+)ƫĊƫ0+ƫāĀƫċ)ċƫ+* ƫ ƫ.% 5ƫ)+.*%*#Čƫ1#1/0ƫĂċƫ((ƫ1y!./ƫr!ƫw!(c+)!ƫ ƫƫƫƫ0+ƫs05ƫey+* ƫāĀƫċ)ċƫ0+ƫc+* 10ƫ1/%*!ss. craftcouncil.org/wholesale Outdoor Lighting As the weather starts to warm up and the daylight lingers longer, it will soon be time to enjoy your outdoor living area again. Whether you have a tiny apartment balcony or a sprawling backyard with a dining area and pool, having great lighting outdoors will really enhance your space. It simply opens up the area to more possibilities. You can grill out later in the evening, entertain with a leisurely cocktail party/dinner, or even take a book outside at dusk. The tips below will help you revive that patio so you can spend more time in the great outdoors! 1. Outdoor lighting for the grilling area: Add a task light by the grill and burning the steaks will become a thing of the past. Barbecue lights are the best for this because they’re flexible and weather-resistant. You can even find battery-powered ones if you are short of outdoor electrical outlets. 2. Outdoor lighting for the dining area: Lighting is a must if you’re planning on enjoying meals outdoors this spring and summer, especially if you are entertaining. You’ll set the scene for relaxed dinners with friends and family that extend into the evening. For the outdoor dining table, soft lighting tends to work best. It creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere even for the most casual of patio furniture sets. Scatter Masterpi ec e s Ma de He r e WHAT’S HOT! candles across the table, or consider hanging a candelabrum overhead. Just remember to use bobeches (drip catchers) with any suspended candles. You don’t want to coat your table with wax! Lanterns also create a nice effect on an outdoor table. There are plenty of battery-operated lanterns out there as well if you don’t want to bother with lighting a wick. 3. Outdoor lighting for the steps: Of course, not everyone has a stairway leading up to their outdoor oasis. If you are one of the lucky ones, show them off! Illuminating your steps adds a leading line to your deck. LED step lights are the way to go. They are incredibly energy-efficient, they often have automatic dusk-to-dawn sensors, and they are surprisingly easy to install. Not to mention you will likely prevent some serious injuries by adding light to your steps. 4. Outdoor lighting for the deck or balcony railings: Outlining your gazebo or railings with string lights or rope lights is a classic option. It’s a great way to add some pizzazz to your deck before a party – and no one will blame you if you leave them up for the rest of the season. 5. Outdoor lighting for the patio surface: For more of a unique result, try using step lights to line the edges of your patio floor. It’s an easy weekend project, and you’ll be thrilled with the new look. Experience a gallery where you are the artist. Where you can see, touch, and feel your home the way you want it, right now. All the latest appliances. Gorgeous sinks and faucets. Brilliant lighting. Plus, the product expertise that makes it easy to turn your vision into reality.
