About ASID:
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is a community of
professionals who believe in the power of interior design to improve the human
experience. With more than 24,000 members, we serve to unite people who share
our belief and seek collaboration with those working to promote the value of
interior design through networking, knowledge and information sharing,
education and training, business support, and advocacy.
Position Description
ASID seeks a creative and talented Communications Director and Magazine Editor.
Under the direction of the Vice President of Communications and Marketing, this
individual will help develop and oversee a communications plan that supports the
Society’s strategic plan and will oversee the editorial direction of several Society
publications, including a quarterly magazine, and monthly and weekly newsletters. Other
responsibilities include working closely with ASID officers and board members on
presentations and remarks for various ASID and industry events and functions; writing
articles, white papers, and talking points; and working with the media to position the
Society as the umbrella organization representing the entire interior design profession
and demonstrating how design can transform lives.
Primary Responsibilities:
Director of Communications (50%)








Work closely with the Society’s PR firm in developing story ideas and media
outreach strategies to ensure that ASID and the interior design profession are
positively and broadly represented across trade, business, and national media
outlets.
Work closely with the ASID Chair of the Board of Directors to compose columns
for ASID and industry publications.
Develop topics and write/edit speeches and remarks for the Society’s officers
and board members.
Develop, write and edit talking points, articles, white papers and other
communications promoting ASID and the entire interior design profession.
Serve as editor of the Society’s monthly online newsletter.
Assist in writing, editing and proofreading online newsletters of other
departments.
Help write marketing copy for brochures, ads, collateral and other marketing
material as needed.
Write scripts and other copy for ASID events and conferences.


Work closely with the Web Marketing Senior Associate to ensure website content
is current, concise, and meets brand standards. Write and edit website content
as needed.
Oversee social media deliverables and post ASID news and promotions to social
media channels as needed.
Magazine Editor (50%)










Oversee the entire magazine management process of producing a high-quality
publication for ASID members with a reach that extends to industry influentials
and the broader design community.
Develop and execute a plan to expand the reach of the magazine beyond the
membership base to include the consumer market.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all groups and
individuals involved in the magazine management process, including the editorial
board, ad sales team, associate editors, freelancers and contributors.
Oversee the work of freelance writers, graphic designers and proofreaders.
Write features and columns as needed.
Respond to letters to the editor and prepare relevant letters for publication.
Compile addresses for contributor and complimentary copies.
Perform various administrative tasks such as writing author contracts and
submission guidelines, budget management, filing for annual non-profit
periodicals status, compiling addresses for contributor and complimentary
copies, and overseeing administrative responsibilities of the publishing company.
Develop an annual editorial calendar and a story budget for each issue.
Respond to queries from would-be contributors and unsolicited manuscripts.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have a strong communications background and a trackrecord of excellence in magazine management for an association, non-profit or other
business-to-business publication. Experience with a consumer publication is a plus.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are prerequisite. Must be creative
and have the strong project management skills to oversee a communications plan and
run a top-quality association magazine. Proven ability to function in a fast-paced,
deadline-driven environment is essential.
Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field, and a minimum of 68 years of communications and magazine management experience.
