(a) (12 Pts) In class, we have addressed the state-space representation of a
dynamic system. Please try your best and use your own words to answer the
following questions:
1. What are state variables? For mechanical systems, we usually choose
displacements and velocities as state variables, why?
2. What is a state matrix? What is its important physical meaning for
explaining system dynamics?
3. Please make a brief comparison between state-space representation and
input-output representation of system dynamics.
(b) (5 Pts) Please tell us the definition of analogous system. What is the
advantage to use the concept of analogous system in system dynamics? (4

(c) (5 Pts) In chapter 2, we have mentioned “the law of displacement”. I must
acknowledge that our introduction is not very clear. Here, please try your
best to write your own explanation as much as possible.
(d) (10 Pts) In order to test your ability of using Matlab/Simulink for solving
system responses (which is important for homework and term projects), please
draw SIMULINK block diagrams for the system shown below.
