The Caddie Tribune
Dear Alumni,
I am happy to bring the newsletter back after a few years’ hiatus. I
hope you enjoy hearing about the past semester we have had! If
you have any suggestions on how to make future newsletters
better feel free to let me know.

A Word from the President
Dear Alumni,
My name is Stefan Schuetz and I am
the Chapter President for the Evans
Scholars here at Ohio State. Just to
give you all a little background
myself before I talk a little about our
chapter. I was born in Chicago and
moved to Kansas then to Dayton,
Ohio, where I learned what caddying
was all about. My dad came up to me
one day and told me about caddying
at Moraine Country Club so I figured
I would try it. Turns out that was one
of the best decisions that I could have
made. I started caddying in seventh
grade and to this day still caddie, but
now at Scioto Country Club in
Columbus, Ohio. My major is nursing
and I hope to pursue a career in the
intensive care unit upon graduation.
Our chapter has been through a
lot this past year with all the
media attention that we have
had. I see our chapter coming
out of that stronger than ever
and you can really see that
when you walk around our
house. As a chapter, we
maintained a 3.24 GPA and
recently raised more than
$1,500 for campus safety
through our Stephanie Hummer
Memorial Golf Tournament.
Additionally, we have had
blood drives at our house,
participated in Relay for Life,
and also in the Adopt-A-Street
Program.
We continue to keep the
Evans Scholarship House
running efficiently, and I
cannot say that I have ever
seen the house in better
condition than it’s in now.
With the help of the
administrative vice
presidents, the house is
immaculate.
I want to end this note by
saying thank you. Without
the help and generous
donations given back to the
Scholarship, we would not
be here, receiving a top
education and living in such
a nice house. It’s nice
knowing that we have a
strong group of Alumni who
back and support us.
Regards,
Stefan Schuetz

Caddies in the Community
This year has been a particularly
vibrant one in terms of Evans
Scholars philanthropy and
community service. As a
chapter, we fulfilled our AdoptA-Street commitment twice in
collaboration with Keep
Columbus Beautiful. Each class
lent a helping hand in making
sure that our own 16th Avenue
was clear of trash and looking
great for our neighbors and other
community members.
Our bigger event of the year was
fielding a team for OSU’s Relay
for Life event on April 10. Relay
for Life is the largest yearly
fundraiser for the American
Cancer Society, which funds
research for a cure to cancer.
The event itself is 16 hours
long, during which at least one
member of each team must be
walking around a track to
represent the journey of a
cancer patient and the reality
that “cancer never sleeps.” Over
the course of spring semester,
the team held a pizza fundraiser
and a lollipop fundraiser, both
of which garnered enormous
support within the chapter as
well as from the Ohio State
community. Through these two
fundraisers along with generous
donations from Evans Scholars
and our fantastic faculty
advisor, Dr. Michael Neblo, we
were able to donate $858 to
cancer research!
As I look to the future of
philanthropy and
community service for our
chapter, I am filled not only
with pride in my fellow
Scholars for all that we have
already done, but also with
anticipation of what such a
positive-thinking and
motivated group of young
people will be able to
accomplish.
Keep an eye out for all that
we will be doing for others
in the 2015-16 school year.

Sports
The past semester
was a good time
for the members
of the Ohio State
chapter to get
together and have
some fun playing
on our chapter’s
intramural teams.
We organized six
teams for the
spring semester:
four basketball,
one indoor
volleyball, and
one indoor
soccer. Some
Scholars were
also able to join a
hockey team with
some friends
from outside of
the house.
The four
basketball teams
included three
men’s teams and
one co-rec team.
One men’s team
did not find much
success, but they
had a lot of fun
just being out
there working on
their games.
The team that was in
the fraternity league
ended with a record
of 1-2-1. They ended
up losing a hardfought game in the
first round of the
playoffs. We had
another one of the
men’s teams make a
good run to the
championship game
before falling in a
tough battle. The corec team was our
first in recent years,
and all involved had
a lot of fun playing.
We plan on trying to
get a similar team
together for next
year!
The indoor
volleyball team
ended with a record
of 1-2. Everyone
who played did a
very good job
communicating with
one another and had
a lot of fun playing.
The indoor soccer
team was not able to
find a lot of scoring,
but came close on a
lot of chances
and plans to
come back
stronger next
year.
The hockey team
that some Evans
Scholars joined
was able to make
a run to the
semifinals. They
were one game
away from
playing the
championship
game in
Nationwide
Arena. Their
games were
played at 1:15
a.m. so they had
to prepare
themselves for
late nights when
they had games!
Great job to
everyone who
participated this
year and
hopefully we can
bring home some
championships
next year!

The New Scholar Class of 2015!
Since my first few months in the
Evans Scholarship House I knew
that I wanted to give back,
especially to the New Scholar
program. I could think of no better
way to do this than to be the newly
appointed Vice President of New
Scholars. I am very excited to get to
work with the amazing group of
incoming New Scholars and to
continue to strengthen the New
Scholar program. Creating a
memorable first year for these
amazing men and women who will
be entering the program is going to
be a difficult, but rewarding
challenge that I cannot wait to
begin. To kick off the start of the
New Scholar program, our chapter
hosted the New Scholars and their
parents for our annual New Scholar
Day on April 26.
This is a day dedicated to
introducing the New Scholars to
Ohio State, and everyone in the
chapter. Not only were the New
Scholars shown around campus
and the Scholarship House, they
also learned about what will be
expected of them as members of
the Evans Scholarship House.
We even had Officer Eric
Winger from the local
Columbus Police Department
come in and answer any
questions the New Scholars, as
well as the active Scholars had,
concerning campus safety as
well as off-campus safety. This
year’s incoming class looks to
be a strong and diverse class
with many great men and
women from Ohio, Michigan
and Illinois.
Our incoming freshmen class has
many diverse majors ranging
from business to engineering to
chemistry. Our whole chapter
looks forward to welcoming them
into our Evans Scholars family
and are awaiting Summer Outing
where we can strengthen the bond
that was created on New Scholar
Day.
I am looking forward to getting to
work with each and every one of
the New Scholars and helping to
ensure that they have a successful
first year. I know that this first
year will make them realize how
blessed they are to have received
one of the top scholarships in the
nation. See you in the fall!

What the Scholarship Has Meant to Me...
First off, I would like to thank the WGA
and all of the donors who make it possible
for hundreds of men and women to attend
various colleges throughout the country
each year. Without their support, we might
not be able to attend college and reach our
full potential. I was blessed to receive the
Evans Scholarship, which enabled me to
attend one of the best schools in the
country: The Ohio State University. It has
been a pleasure living among fellow
Evans Scholars these past four years and I
will have so many memories to take with
me. This Scholarship has helped mold me
into the person I am today and has given
me so many opportunities I wouldn’t have
had otherwise.
Although I will no longer be living in the
Scholarship House, I will continue to
represent the Evans Scholarship to the
best of my ability. This semester I
interned with a company called Irvin
Public Relations and will continue to
work there once I graduate. I look
forward to giving back to the
Scholarship and impacting the lives of
future Scholars. I will forever be grateful
to the people who helped make it
possible for me to attend college and
achieve my goals. Once again, thanks for
all the support these past four years. Go
Bucks!

2015 Stephanie Hummer Memorial Tournament
The annual Stephanie Hummer
Memorial Tournament is a
staple of an academic year in
the Ohio State Evans Scholars
chapter. It is a day on the golf
course in which Alumni reunite
their chapters for an enjoyable
round of golf. But many people
overlook the true meaning of
the tournament: contributing to
campus safety in the memory of
one young woman our
organization tragically lost,
Stephanie Hummer. As
executive vice president, I was
presented with the task of
organizing and executing this
event.
I can happily report the
tournament was a rousing
success. Everyone seemed to
enjoy themselves
wholeheartedly and we were
able to raise approximately
$3,000 toward the cause of
campus safety. I would like to
congratulate our winners once
again, the Mike McCann
group. I am very happy to
have been the head of this
event for the year, and it gives
me great pride to see Evans
Scholars coming together to
donate to such a good cause.

To end this newsletter, I
will share with you a letter
that senior Kirsten Marlow
wrote to the New Scholars.
It has been a privilege to be a
part of the Evans Scholars
community for the past four
years. Through the Evans
Scholarship I became part of
something bigger than myself.
Opportunities have been opened
to me and my fellow Scholars,
and for this I am truly thankful.
Without the Evans Scholarship,
my ability to attend Ohio State
would have been unthinkable.
It’s hard to believe that within a
matter of weeks I will graduate
with my bachelor’s degree in
middle childhood education and
upon graduation will begin my
master’s in education program
here at Ohio State. I leave this
House with many friendships and
memories that I will carry with
me forever. I will never forget
the times spent rafting in West
Virginia, tailgating before
football games, freshmen
bonding, Bernie’s Nights, and
winning the National
Championship! Even though my
time is done as a Scholar, I will
forever cherish these four short
years.
And with that, here are my Top
Ten Tips for Incoming New
Scholars…
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Have fun! These
years will go faster
than you can imagine;
cherish them.
Enjoy freshman year.
Bond with your
classmates, after
freshman year many
people go their
separate ways. Enjoy
the time you spend
with your class.
Hit the ground
running. Don't think
you have time to
catch up on studies
later, start
immediately--trying to
catch up in classes is
discouraging and
defeating.
Buy a good umbrella.
When it rains, it pours
in Columbus. Don’t
be the kid walking
around with an
inside-out
umbrella...take it from
me, it sucks!
Keep a ten foot
distance between you
and High Street on
rainy days, or you’ll
be met with a
Columbus tidal wave.
6.
Limit fast food
intake. Fast food
equals freshman
fifteen.
7. Watch out for your
fellow Evans
Scholars; they’re
your brothers and
sisters.
8. Take a trip to
Nyoh’s Country
Bar! Learn how to
line dance.
9. Buy football
tickets. You will
never forget the
Ohio State football
experience. Ohio
State hockey games
are a blast too, and
they’re free!
10. Pay attention
inside and outside
the classroom.
Make the most of
each moment.
Work hard and
never get lazy. This
is a once-in-alifetime
opportunity. Do
not waste it!
Good luck New Scholars
and Go Bucks!
