BRANDON BLEVINS LIGHTS A CANDLE DURING THE CEREMONY. BY: ANNA V. School Spirit Day 1.1 Character Day Camo Day WHO’S GOT SPIRIT ? Pink Day 1 HUSKIES DO! Wednesday night the junior and senior girls as well as a few lucky guys came
out and continued their support for breast cancer by participating in the Powder
Puff game. The flag football game concluded with a win for the senior girls, but
such a feat could not have occurred without the undying support from the male
cheerleaders of the night. Decade Day This past week, October 13th-17th, Ashe County High School students gathered
their inner husky pride to go all out for spirit week. Monday the halls were not only
filled with the aura of learning but with portrayals of character favorites amongst the
student body. With ranges from AMC’s The Walking Dead to a childhood favorite
Scooby-Doo and gang, character day was a success. Tuesday allowed the country
spirit of Ashe County to be displayed without shame via camo day. Wednesday not
only paid homage to a classic among the student body, Mean Girls, but allowed
everyone to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on pink day.
A blast from the past occurred on Thursday as a result of students breaking out
their bell-bottoms and tie dye for decade day. The real husky spirit shone through
on Friday with School Spirit day. Students came decked out in purple and silver in
support of their favorite team the day of their homecoming game against the East
Wilkes Cardinals.

On Wednesday, September 24th Ashe County High Scholl’s CRU Club (Campus Crusade for Christ) led students in
prayer. Students met in front of the school at 7:15am for a complimentary breakfast. Soon after, the congregation was
broken up into smaller groups; each one included a CRU prayer leader. In their small groups students formed a circle, held
hands, and each person said a prayer. When all of the small groups finished everyone formed one large circle and joined
hands once again. A microphone was then passed to each Prayer Leader whom summed up what was said in their small
groups.

CUTTING THROUGH SCIENCE
Maggie B. & Olivia Amber M. & Haley P. During Mrs. Jenkins Health Science I class, her students get the hands on experience of dissecting a whole animal
one organ at a time. To further their knowledge, the students are given the opportunity to explore the organ and identify the
major vessels. In this dissection, her students received a heart to explore. The students enjoy dissection because it’s a
valuable learning opportunity in which they gain a better understanding of how each body system works, and this will help
them in their impending health care careers.

VALOR
On Monday, November 10, Ashe County Schools held their annual Veteran’s Day assembly at Ashe County High
School. During this time students and staff gathered in the gymnasium along with local veterans to honor those who have
served and those we have lost. The high school chorus sang several patriotic ballads. Some of our staff also joined in for
some songs. Master Sergeant Wetmore, our special guest speaker, gave students a wonderful insight into the mind of a
veteran that they see every day. His speech included a touching story about a veteran and a friend of his who said the
worst part of being a veteran was being forgotten. This served as a much needed reminder for how we need to honor those
who have fought for our country more than just the one day per year set aside by the government. Overall, this year’s
Veterans Day assembly was one to be remembered, not only for the touching things that were said, but for the lessons
learned.
The Ashe County High School Joint Choir
entertained students and guests with
wonderful renditions of classic patriotic
ballads.
Cadet Major Matt C. Commander of the
ACHS Drill Team, entertained the crowd
with his solo rifle spinning routine.
Local veterans from all branches of
the military gathered at the high
school to be honored.
Seven JROTC members joined forces to participate in
the classic twenty-one gun salute.
