Health Care Facilities Management Intern Position Description: Health care facilities management interns are responsible for providing technical assistance and innovative ideas to the health care facility team. ASHE interns work to gain a broad understanding of the health care facilities management profession, and gain exposure to building/construction management and operations/maintenance management in a health care setting. Health Care Facilities Management Interns support regulatory compliance activities relating to a hospital/health care facility’s occupational safety, infection prevention, and environmental sustainability programs. Interns are fully integrated into the health care facility management team and assist in the operations; maintenance; planning, design, and construction management; and the repair of equipment found in medical facilities. Job Duties: Prepares and/or reviews facility construction or facility management plans and designs for structures and/or systems Develops, prepares, and reviews reports and studies to identify and recommend facility solutions Performs inspections of systems operations and of structures and facilities under construction or renovation Implements health care regulations to achieve facility compliance Provides technical assistance to health care facility team leaders and staff Analyzes and interprets data and regulations to determine necessary courses of actions Reviews new products, equipment, processes and facilities for potential hazards and compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards, making recommendations if necessary prior to introduction Communicates and works with contractors and health care equipment suppliers Qualifications: Must be a college junior or senior pursuing a Bachelor’s or Masters degree in Facilities Management; Mechanical, Industrial, Environmental, or Electrical Engineering; Construction Management; Architecture; Real Estate Management; or related degree Desired cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale Proficient with Microsoft Office software; familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software a plus Those with a college degree or associates degrees who are interested in entering the field of health care facilities management may also apply. Experience, Skills, and Knowledge Desired: Must excel in math and science and understand how to apply math concepts Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; attention to detail required Must possess qualities of compassion, kindness, poise, and other attributes associated with working in a healing environment Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and interpret information to complete repairs Ability to react positively under pressure Must be able to work independently and take responsibility Knowledge of governmental/agency regulatory requirements for health care facilities a plus Experience with a professional student society, such as the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), is also a plus Potential Achievements to Be Gained: Learn the step-by-step processes for building/renovating health care facilities, and identify what health care facilities need to accomplish before, during, and after construction or renovation takes place. Understand how hospitals manage energy efficiency. Gain exposure to a health care institutions’ full facility portfolio, including operating rooms, boiler rooms, police departments, and more! Experience the impact health care facilities management can have on clinical quality, patient satisfaction, and patient outcomes. Display competency in plumbing, electrical, heating, and air systems; distinguish the difference between managing these systems in health care facility vs. a traditional commercial facility. Obtain knowledge of regulatory health care codes for operating, building, and maintaining heath care facilities. Develop an understanding and appreciation for health care facilities management and how they make a difference in hospitals and other health care institutions.
