Activity 1 A story is made up of different elements. Create a map by filling in the information for the story “The Pet”. Setting Map Title of the Story Where does the story take place? When does the story take place? How does the place look like? Character Map Title of the Story Who are the important people in the story? Tell something about each person in the story. 2 Who is your most liked person in the story? Why? Plot Map Title of the Story What are the important events in the story? What is the problem of the character/s in the story? What is the solution to the problem? Remember! A story has three elements. Setting, Character and Plot are elements of a Story. The setting tells about the time and the place where the story happened. The character tells about the important person or persons in the story. The Plot tells about the events in the story. It includes problems the character faces in the story and the resolution of the problem. 3 Tell and Learn! Activity 2 Read the following sentences from the selection “The Pet” A. Aunt Rosa stayed back home to prepare Sally’s favorite buko shake and bibingka. “How exciting, mother! After two long months of work, sheis coming home,” said Ben. “I wonder what she bought for me.” At the terminal, Father asked, “Buses have come and gone. Where is Sally?” “The sun is now starting to set. Let’s wait for the next bus. Sally might already be in it, “mother said with a worried voice. Holding back tears from his eyes, Ben said, “Mother, I’m sure she’s on the next bus. Don’t worry.” “Here is the last bus from the city!” said father. “Let’s hope Sally is in it.” As the door of the bus opened, Sally ran to her family with smile on her lips and shouting “Mother, father, at last, I’m here!” “You have made everybody worried,” said father. “I’m sorry but traffic was long,” said Sally. 5 Father and Ben helped Sally with her bags. Nouns can be divided into two groups: COUNT nouns and MASS nouns. Nouns can be counted are called “count nouns.” The plural forms of these nouns are usually made by adding an “s” to the singular forms. What do you call the part of the story that tells character’s problem and how he/she solved it? Remember! The Plot is an element of the story. It is made up of the problem and its solution. The problem tells a situation that the character of the story faces. The solution tells how the character faced the solution and solved it. Activity 8: Read the short story below. Try to find the problem in the story, and its solution. Paragraph A Jenny and Joyce visited grandfather’s farm. “I really love this place,” said Jenny “The trees are amazing!” said Joyce. “They’re full of fruits. Remember! Events in poems and stories happen in a certain order. When we sequence events, we arrange them according to the order they happened in a story or poem. To arrange the events in a story, look for signal words like first, next, last, before, after and finally or last to help you figure out the sequence. Affixes are syllables which are added to the root words to form words with new meanings. They may be added before the root words such as dis-, im- and un-. Example: dishonest, impolite, unlock They may also be added at the end of the root words such a –ful and –ness. Example: thoughtful, greatness. Let’s Try This!
