ADDITIONAL MEDIA / EQUIPMENT LIST FOR 2016 FOUNDATION STUDENTS Note: If you already own some of these items or there are similar requirements between subjects, you are not required to have two of the same items. COMPUTER It is highly desirable that foundation students have access to a computer at home. Senior students must have workstations at home. Ensure that you buy the latest model from an authorised reseller. The Orange Digital Store (sales@odsonline.co.za) on campus offers good deals on Apple Macs and free advice. PC or MAC? The choice between PC or MAC is your own. Animation: 3D Animation software works best with Windows 64 bit architecture and dedicated graphics acceleration (not onboard graphics like Intel, but rather graphics card brands like NVidia or AMD). Apple machines can also be used, but some software applications are Windows-‐based and will require disk partitioning. Design studies: Design software runs more stable on MAC and screens are better for colour calibration. FILM & TV Very important: Do not buy any equipment before 2016. The Subject Manager has compiled a very comprehensive guide with buying advice that will be made available to Film students when class starts. Every student needs to buy / have access to a DSLR camera with video capabilities. They are the most affordable option compared to other video-‐only camera solutions. The two top brands are NIKON and CANON. We recommend Canon DSLR cameras because: • Most camera modification software available on the market is for Canon DSLR cameras • Canon has more DSLR video users which means there is a bigger support structure in South Africa • Canon fits into the existing workflow and support structure at Open Window A basic kit for shooting video includes: 1 x camera body, battery and charger 1 x Lens 1 x memory card 1 x card reader 1 x tripod 1 x camera bag 1 x UV filter 1 x lens pen Entry to mid-‐level cameras: Canon EOS 60D DSLR, or EOS 70D DSLR (from R6 000 – R13 000). Consider an extra battery as shooting video drains the battery quickly. EF lens, Not EF-‐S or EF-‐M Canon EF 35mm F/2.0 lens OR Canon EF 40mm F/2.8 STM lens Class 10 SD card Should read both SD and CF cards, from R300 Heavy and sturdy tripod with fluid head, eg. Manfrotto MK394-‐H Video Tripod from R1500 Good quality padded bag to protect your gear with room for more gear than you currently own, prices start from R1000 From R100 upwards. Protects the lens from bumps and scratches Around R110. To keep your gear clean. Dirty gear = unusable footage 5 6 7
