Work Zone Awareness Week stresses safety
Throughout the next several
months, ITRCC will begin its 2013
construction season with many road,
structure and plaza improvements
in the works to keep travel on the
Indiana Toll Road as well-maintained
as possible.
Accordingly, the National Work
Zone Awareness Week 2013 will
be held from April 15-19, and will
help to stress safety in construction
zones. The 2013 theme, “We’re
all in this together,” highlights
the complexities of work zones,
especially in urban areas, and the
need for awareness and planning
on the part of everyone affected by
work zones – DOTs, road workers,
drivers, bicyclists,
motorcycles,
pedestrians,
emergency
response, law
enforcement,
utility workers.
With the increase
in travel during this time of year,
ITRCC and the Federal
Highway Administration
remind drivers to be
aware and cautious of the
many projects occuring on
the roads, including the
following on the Toll Road:
◊ Mill & Fill throughout
length of road (pavement
repairs)
◊ Bridge Capital
Improvement plan 2013, in
which many structures will
be improved, including at
Mileposts 47-50; MP 2, 3,
5 and 6; MP 20; and MP 61
and MP 67
◊ Mowing crews
maintaining medians,
shoulders and other areas
near the roadway
◊ Pavement re-striping and
marking throughout the Toll
Road
◊ Bridge painting for structures in
need, including at Mileposts 4,
22, 52 and 122
Results of these road improvements
could include lane restrictions and
construction crews, and ITRCC
would like to offer some tips for
driving safely in work zones:
• Expect the unexpected
• Slow down
• Don’t tailgate
• Keep a safe distance between
you and the car ahead of you
• Pay attention to the signs
• Obey road crew flaggers
• Stay alert and minimize
distractions
• Keep up with traffic flow
• Schedule enough time to
drive safely and check radio, TV and
Web sites for traffic information
• Be patient and stay calm

Avoid a surcharge! Properly mount your E-ZPass
E-ZPass transponders (including I-PASS and Ohio E-ZPass) are designed to be
mounted inside your vehicle’s front windshield, behind the rearview mirror and
about 1 inch down from where the roof and the windshield meet (See photo).
Please make certain you are using your E-ZPass in this manner for it to be 100
percent effective. If not placed in the windshield as stated, there is a good
chance that the antenna may miss the signal and your tag will not be read when
you reach the gate.

About the
Indiana Toll Road
In operation since 1956,
the ITR stretches 157 miles
across the northernmost part
of Indiana from its border
with Ohio to the Illinois
State Line, where it provides
the primary connection to
the Chicago Skyway and
downtown Chicago. The ITR
links the largest cities on the
Great Lakes with the Eastern
Seaboard. The connections
with I-65 and I-69 lead to
major destinations in the South
and on the Gulf Coast.
For 25 years the ITR had
been operated by the Indiana
Department of Transportation
(INDOT). In 2005, Gov.
Mitch Daniels proposal to
privatize the Toll Road was
deliberated and enacted into
law by the Indiana General
Assembly. On January 23,
2006, Statewide Mobility
Partners (SMP), a joint venture
between Cintra Concesiones
de Infraestructuras de
Transporte SA (Cintra) and
Macquarie Infrastructure
Group (MIG), was awarded
the project with a bid of $3.8
billion U.S. dollars.
SMP in turn created ITR
Concession Co., located in
Granger, Ind., to maintain
operations on the ITR.
