IRISHMAN RALLY
Gary Moore and crew bracing the cold in their Crysler Special
Queen’s Birthday Weekend 4th / 6th June 2011
Welcome to all taking part in the Irishman Rally in 2011
For 56 years members of the Canterbury Branch of the Vintage
Car Club have cranked up their 1931 and older vehicles, and
headed away for a weekend of wonderful motoring in the
Mackenzie Basin.
This event has never waned in popularity, entrants now
registering from all over New Zealand, facing the challenge of
gravel roads, paper roads, private farm tracks, paddocks, touch
and go river crossings, tyre chains, tow ropes, the occasional
pick and shovel and of course the ever variable weather.
Irishman Rally takes its name from Irishman Creek Station, so
called after the plant Wild Irishman ( Matagouri ).
By the early 1950’s Bill Hamilton was one of New Zealand’s well
known motor racing drivers and inventor. His property, workshop
and location being the attraction for the 1st Irishman Rally in
1955.
The winners trophy was donated by Ian Wardell, host of the Lake
Pukaki Inn. This same trophy is still awarded today, the winner
has the privilege of organising next years Rally, ably assisted by
the Runner Up.
Until 1959, Irishman was run at Easter, but in 1959 the South
Canterbury Branch of the Vintage Car Club was running a
National Rally at Easter, so Irishman Rally was moved to
Queen’s Birthday Weekend.
Sometime in the early 60’s the venue was changed to Braemar
Station, by Lake Pukaki, some jolly times were had at Braemar
when it was managed by Big John Robertson. When the Land
Company sold Braemar Station in the late 60’s, Irishman was in
danger of extinction. Rob Shand who owned Strathconan on the
outskirts of Fairlie agreed to host the Irishman Rally.
With the ever increasing number participating, the festivities were
moved from the Homestead to the Woolshed. Today there are
members still braving the Spartan accommodation conditions in
the Stathconan Shearers Quarters, in the true spirit of Irishman.
All remaining accommodation in and around Fairlie is fully
occupied by rally participants for the Queen’s Birthday Weekend.
Fairlie Primary School Art Attack
7th , 9th and 10th June
Plans are underway for the first school-wide Art Attack, in the week
following Queen’s Birthday.
On Thursday June 9th, the whole school will be visiting Te Ana, the Maori
rock art centre in Timaru, and Aigantighe Art Gallery. Both venues have
great educational programmes and we are really looking forward to taking
the children to town!
Tuesday June 7th, and Friday June 10th, will be spent with a major art
focus on the theme of “Change” in individual classrooms. We are looking
forward to working with parents and with Fairlie’s Artist in Residence, Lorna
Allan.
This year Irishman Rally is starting at Methven, on Saturday 4th
June, travelling into the High Country, eventually making it’s way
to Fairlie. The following day Sunday 5th June some new and
different routes and some that are great to travel down are on the
agenda, followed by driving tests at Strathconan, competing for
the Shands Patch Trophy.
On Sunday evening a prize giving function is held at the Fairlie
Rugby Club Rooms.
On behalf of the Irishman Rally participants, the organisers are
looking forward to the challenges, the fun and the goodwill of the
Fairlie Community and perfect weather conditions for this premier
event. May this years winners be able to carry forward the spirit
of those who started Irishman Rally, challenging both car and
competitor.

MT ALFORD TRACK
H Dawsons Farm Direct
Recently I had the chance to explore this part of Canterbury.
What a little gem it is to walk, not too far from home, and can be
done at most times of the year. Mt Alford Track is in the Mt
Alford Conservation area which is up near Mt Somers. To find
the car park, drive up the Inland Scenic route, which is
Highway 72, Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road. Turn left at the Hall in
Mt Alfords little village and drive to the end of the road. You feel
like you are going to hit the farm track, but take a little turn to the
right and you will see the DOC car park sign.

Then its boots on and off up the well formed and well used track.
You follow a gully clothed in beech and lots of other native bush.
Gradually the track opens out onto tussock and grassland.
There are good track markers to follow as you do travel through
private farms, so stay on the track.
The last part of the climb is through subalpine vegetation to the
summit of Mt Alford [1,171 m]. On a fine day, as we had, your
views are across the Canterbury Plains, Mt Hutt and Pudding
Hill Range are to the west, and to the north is Winterslow
Range. Lots more hills just waiting to be walked over!!
When you reach the summit, there is a nice ridge to continue
along, but unfortunately you have to return the same way!
The distance is 4.6km and a 2.5 to 3hr climb [one way]. This
gives you plenty of time for photos and generally enjoying the
day out.
This is a great trip out for the family, not too hard. In years gone
by, the area has been logged and burned, leaving a small cover
of black and mountain beech, found mostly in the gullies.
Your reward at the end of the day is a coffee at the Mt Alford
Store that has been reopened and restored. Very cosy leather
chairs to relax in by the open fire. Yum! They provide meals and
the usual 'country store' treats! They are closed Mondays.

Police Notebook:
In this day and age of the internet and communication
technology it would be good practice to keep tabs on what
your kids are up to on the computer and cell phone. All these
social networking sites such as Facebook are prime places for
predators to groom perspective targets. It may start out
harmless enough but can quickly turn sinister and nasty.
Remind your kids to be careful and sure about whom they are
actually networking with. All is not what it seems sometimes.
Hello Mackenzie District. I'm sorry I missed the last couple of
Accessibles so I will have to play a bit of catch up with some
old news along with the new.
The crime front has quietened down a bit recently due to a few
troublesome offenders moving on and giving us a rest. Don't
drop your guard though and we are still interested in hearing
about anything that looks a bit suspicious around the area.
Firearm licence holders are reminded again to check the
expiry date on their licences as it can sneak up on you. I
know I would rather pay $126.50 instead of $241.50 for an
expired renewal. The renewal application needs to be lodged
with the police at least two months before it expires to allow
time for the process to go through. If you are in possession of
firearms after it expires then you open yourself up to a
prosecution for unlawful possession of firearms. Don't forget
it is also a legal requirement of firearms licence holders to
notify police within 28 days of a change of address.
A local Fairlie man reported being defrauded out of $1000 due
to a bogus Trademe deal over a cell phone that probably
doesn't exist. Police are following a good line of enquiry with
an identified Chinese suspect living in Auckland.
An old large copper header tank was stolen from a secluded
building site on Te Puke Rd. It had been removed from the
house during renovations and left lying in the grass out the
back. It was worth a few hundred dollars as scrap and
perhaps the perpetrator thought that it was not wanted, so if it
turns up again there will be no questions asked.
Let's continue to keep the drink driving message in mind. You
could be stopped anytime, anyplace. There's no excuse
these days. If you are going to have a few drinks then make
sure you organise a ride home that won't end in tragedy.
A local Fairlie man was picked up drink driving and returned a
blood alcohol result of two and a half times the legal limit. He
had his drivers licence suspended for 28 days immediately.
Some of us are getting a bit complacent with our seatbelts
again. No matter how short the journey is, get into the habit of
making it click. It will not only save you money, but may well
save your life or an unnecessary injury. You wouldn't go
bungee jumping without strapping the bungee on would you!
There were a couple of crashes on the same day along the
Fairlie-Geraldine Highway at Mt Michael. The first was a large
B Train truck & trailer unit roll over which blocked the road for
some time while the bales of wool were unloaded and the unit
recovered by cranes. The Christchurch driver is facing
careless driving charges. The second was a Tekapo man
driving too fast and failing to take a bend and crashing into a
rock bank. He is also facing careless driving charges plus
another one for driving while disqualified. His badly damaged
car was impounded.
As always I am interested in any information that could assist
my inquiries into any of the above matters or anything else
you may want to bring to my attention.
Bye for now and stay crime free until next time.
Russell Halkett
Fairlie Police
Two dogs were caught mauling several sheep at an Albury
property. Two sheep were badly injured and had to be
destroyed on the spot and several others were less injured
and should recover. The two offending dogs were also put
down.
Poachers were caught in the act at Lilybank Station after
being seen hunting on the private fenced trophy block behind
the Lilybank Lodge without permission. The two Australians
and their Geraldine guide were confronted after their hunt by
legitimate hunters at the end of the day. Enquiries are
continuing but charges are likely to follow against the
Geraldine man.
There have been other reports of people spotlighting and
shooting from the roadsides around the Fairlie area. This is a
highly dangerous practise and totally illegal due to the loaded
firearms in vehicles and trespass offences. I will be targeting
this type of activity at anytime of the night and prosecuting
anyone identified or caught. The offenders will also probably
lose their firearms licences if they have one. I shouldn't have
to remind people of the recent avoidable tragedy at a DOC
campground near Turangi last October where a young lady
was shot through the head by three idiots spotlighting while
she was brushing her teeth. If you must go spotlighting it is
only legal on private property with the permission of the owner
and no where near dwellings.

FIGURE SKATING GETS UNDERWAY
The Lake Tekapo Ice Skating Club are entering their fourth
season since their re-establishment in 2007 and are excited
about all the possibilities for getting keen skaters out on the ice.
The focus for the club this year will be on Figure Skating
coaching, with Alpine Springs taking over the running of the
“Learn to Skate” sessions on Friday evenings. Most of the club’s
members have already passed the learn-to-skate levels and are
keen to begin some more graceful and technical maneuvers.

Tekapo’s own, Kate Bell, has kindly offered to share her vast
experience, and although she is not a trained coach, she has
previously coached figure skating groups in Christchurch and is a
very enthusiastic and graceful skater to learn from. Kate will be
teaching “Edges”, “Mohawks” and other basic and intermediate
Figure Skating moves, during public sessions at Alpine Springs
Winter Park on Wednesdays between 4.30pm and 5.00pm for
primary and intermediate children, and between 5.00pm and
5.30pm for secondary students and adults. Coaching will start
from May 25th, and include 6 weekly sessions, ending on
Wednesday June 29th. To join in, club membership for 2011 will
cost $30 for individuals and $50 for families, plus normal skating
and skate hire rates at each session.
Seasons passes to the rink are also available to club members
for special reduced rates of $90 for Under 13’s, $110 for Under
19’s and $120 for Adults. Numbers will be limited to 10 per
group, so registration for sessions are essential.
Later in the season, the club also plans to organise some
Synchronised Skating or Dance sessions. Kate will need to see
how our budding Figure Skaters progress through the initial 6
sessions, so dates and details for this will be advised at a later
date. Funding from Albury Ice Sports Foundation will be
available to book exclusive ice time for these sessions, which will
be great fun for all involved to see skaters putting their moves
together into a coordinated performance and perhaps even
getting into some costumes!!
Additional access to Christchurch coaches is still a possibility,
and the club is continuing to seek out opportunities to bring in a
formal coach for some Saturday or Sunday morning sessions in
smaller groups of approx 4, during public sessions. For those
interested, please ensure you are on the club emailing list to get
plenty of advance notice for all ice skating opportunities.

Willing students lend a helping hand at the Fairlie Heritage Museum
under the supervision of Museum member Hugh McKenzie
Above: Kimberlea Brown and Laura Adams helped out at Moreh.
Senior Mackenzie College students worked throughout the area for the
day, including the schools, kindy, library, Lake Tekapo Regional Park,
the museum, and gathering leaves around the town. Assisted and
supported by a number of volunteers and staff from the various
organisations the students achieved a great deal in the day. Mackenzie
College thanks all those who hosted the students and enabled the day to
be such a success!
The Miss Mackenzie Event
The event has come about following a most successful similar
show in Geraldine last year and we’ve got people on the
committee who have been in one prior.
The idea is that hopefully 12 men will put themselves forward,
supported by a business, club or whatever to be a contestant.
Yes they dress as women but in many cases are not recognisable.
A couple of closed practices will make the whole thing pretty darn
good!
Of course there is the usual fuss of any beauty pageant with music
and lights and in this case the contestants parade in sports or
daywear followed by the evening gown. There is a short talent
segment and the usual question as to how they would change the
world if they won this coveted title.
The talent segment can be as little as juggling three balls,
playing the spoons or reciting a small poem! ‘All in the best
possible taste!’
We know it sounds threatening to many men but the fact is that it
will be done with the best of taste, it won’t be taking the ‘mickey’
out of the contestants, played pretty straight and the evening will
require formal dress by those attending. A pretty upmarket do with
quality contestants!
Each contestant will have 20 tickets for their supporting firm or
club to buy, thus a 20 seater table will be there waiting just for you.
So we’d be grateful for you to give this some thought - you get
free advertising for your business or club, don't have to say who it
is that you have as the contestant. It’s a fundraiser for the three
Fairlie schools with them working together to give Fairlie a good
night out and fun galore.
Now Maureen Lott and Amanda Drummond will be calling to
encourage you to think about an entrant - it just won’t do your
business etc any harm at all - in fact it will be a hoot!

Made of very high pressure
Polyethylene and Polyprop pipe:
I spent last Thursday evening at Pepper’s Bluewater Resort in
Lake Tekapo listening to the presentations of a number of
groups who were involved in various projects in the Tekapo
community. It was an informative and well organised meeting
and the conference room at Pepper’s was an ideal venue.
It was pleasing to see the commitment and enthusiasm of the
different groups represented in driving their particular projects.
For such a small community, Lake Tekapo certainly has some
very motivated and innovative people.
On the list for the evening were;
The Children’s Playground Group
The Solar Challenge/ Sundial Project
Lake Tekapo Regional Park
Lake Tekapo Footbridge Society
These are all projects initiated by members of the community
and requiring substantial amounts of time, energy and funding to
complete, so the idea of the evening was to brief us on the
details of each project, what the overall costs were and what
stage they were currently at.
In my opinion they are all worthwhile projects each with a
different focus and I wish that I had a cheque book (personal not
council) big enough to fund the whole lot! Unfortunately I don’t,
so these groups must look at ways to raise funds and approach
organisations for grants to help get their projects completed.

Mackenzie Basketball Supporters Club
This year the Mackenzie Basketball Supporters Club have four
teams playing in the South Canterbury Basketball League on a
Friday night in Timaru.
After 3 weeks the Mackenzie Senior Girls team coached by Greg
Anderson and the Junior Girls who have Ross Candy as coach,
have won all their games.
The Senior Mackenzie 2 and Senior Boys are yet to have a win
but are getting closer.
Thanks to Denise Brown for driving the bus each week!
The Twizel to Timaru Bus Service
Just a small reminder about this excellent bus service on a
Friday morning, from Twizel through to Timaru, picking up
passengers en route. It passes through Fairlie about 10 past 9, picking
passengers up from on the Village Green opposite
Heartlands. It returns about 4.30pm and it pays to book.
You can do that by ringing 0800 284 6278.
Get Ready - Get Through
Are you prepared and equipped to cope on your own for three
days in case of an emergency? Hey truth is - it’s up to you!
Fox Peak Ski Area is among New Zealand’s oldest, and
biggest serviced snow fields in NZ. It has always been
operated and developed by volunteer enthusiasts.
Late 1920s the Tasman Ski Club was inaugurated and enjoyed
competitions with newly formed North Island and Canterbury
Clubs. The first area for the club’s ski field was on the Ball Glacier a
tributary of the Tasman Glacier (Mt Cook). Members were all keen,
outdoor, mountain loving people. They were made up of Norwegian
visitors, local mountain guides, Hermitage staff and some teachers
from Timaru Boys High School. The tow, had to be replaced every
season as the glacier kept moving it.
Late 1930 & 1940s The club, delayed with the WW2, moved its ski
ground to Fox Peak with the support of local land owners. Weekend
access was easier here for more people. Skiers walked from
Clayton Road. The essential accommodation hut was dug into the
hillside. Pack horses and members carried materials to the site.
When operating it began providing a welcome resting place for the
winter adventurers. The first little tow, with a sledge base, was made
to pull itself up the mountain and began its decades of faithful
service.
1950s The vehicle track across “the flat” shortened the walk in and a
steep rugged 4wd vehicle track grew up the mountain. When this
access was completed the “Main Tow” tractor was driven into its
position, wheels removed, and the axels drove the tow. The “Top
Hut” and “Old Canteen” were built close by. Below, the bridge
replaced the ford over the North Opuha River. For over 30 years, 5
weeks of the year we saw the “Bottom Hut” packed with young
enthusiasts enjoying their school and university holidays in the
mountains.
1960s & 1970’s A new “Intermediate Tow”, driven by the “Main Tow”
tractor, opened the more gentle “Meadow” Area for intermediate
skiers. Then the new access road was cut to a gradient for car
access to the “top car park” at the field. Next a new tractor and tow
made better use of the Meadow Area and the new “Apex Tow”
opened the amazing “Back Basins”.
1980s onwards: Extensions substantially improved the
accommodation and comfort of “Fox Lodge”. And the current project,
the new platter lift, is due to be operating this season.
All these developments are the result of members volunteering their
time, assets, skills and hard work for the benefit of local and visiting
mountain enthusiasts. We salute them all and are delighted when we
see their own successes helped by the lessons they learned from
their generosity and enthusiasm for a job well done at Fox Peak!

I am originally from Dunedin and while in recent years I
moved to Auckland, the South has always been in my
heart. How could it not when we are surrounded here
with such beauty. I have been painting most of my life
working full time in later years and mainly specializing in
landscapes in acrylic. While there are some of my
works available for viewing at Dawson and Hall
Gallery unfortunately the gallery is now on restricted
hours for the meantime and only open Tuesdays and

conducted over 4 or 5 consecutive days. More
information on dates and costs involved will be advised
