In the 90’s she was member of the Texas Education Agency’s “ Adult Education Professional Development and Curriculum Consortium”, coordinated a national and state Literacy AmeriCorps programs for the City of Houston READ Commission, and was a research specialist for ESOL, bilingual, migrant and immigrant programs for the Houston Independent School District. Dr Manzanero has a doctorate in Sociology with specialties in methods of Social research and Sociology of Education from the University of Denver. Michelle Llosa is the Senior Community Advocate with the Florida office of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). As a community advocate she works with the community to better understand the needs of Florida’s children specifically in areas of education and juvenile justice. Prior to joining SPLC, Michelle worked as a paralegal in Massachusetts assisting in the criminal defense of indigent clients. Michelle graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree and from Northeastern School of Law with her Juris doctorate. She is passionate about seeking justice for our must vulnerable members of society and fighting zealously to ensure the equal protection and rights of all. Dr. Carlos Diaz is currently the Program Planner of African, African American, Latino, and Gender Studies for the Palm Beach County School District. Dr. Diaz is also Professor Emeritus in The College of Education at Florida Atlantic University where he specialized in Multicultural and Global Education. He is editor and co-author of four books and contributing author to other texts as well as various articles. He began his teaching career at Carver Middle School in Delray Beach before moving to the Social Science faculty of Broward Community College. This varied scholarly background and excellence as a presenter makes Dr. Rodriguez uniquely qualified to deliver the topic of this Institute's Keynote Lecture, " Latino Portrayals in the Media: Implications for Educators". Génesis Lara graduated with high honors from the University of Florida with a degree in history and a minor in Latin American studies in 2014. Her undergraduate thesis, “The Forgotten Revolution: Memory, Politics and the Anti-Colonial Struggle in the Dominican Republic, 1961-1966,” shed light on the importance of this revolution to Latin America and global Cold War politics. While at the University of Florida, she was the Executive Director for the 2013 Hispanic Heritage Month, the largest student-run celebration of Hispanic-Latino Culture in the nation. In Spring 2014, Génesis was inducted into the Hispanic-Latino Hall of Fame in 2014. Break Dr. Ramirez holds a an Ed.D. in Language, Literacy and Culture from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He previously taught at Rhode Island College and is currently an Assistant Professor of Education at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Dr. Ramirez is a specialist in TESOL and Bilingual Education. He is also expert in functional as well as applied linguistics. He advocates culturally responsive pedagogy for diverse students. “Latinos in the U.S. Curriculum: Imperative of Elective?” Dr. Ramirez has been a presenter in prior institutes and conferences put on by this district and his presentations have been well received. Born in Savannah, Georgia, Edward has worked in Central Europe since 1985. Between 1996 and 1999, he produced three films for ABC News Nightline. Edward has published three books Out of the Shadows, Survival in Sarajevo and Jews, Germany, Memory. He has contributed to Time Magazine, The L.A.Times, The Washington Post, and other outlets. Ed founded Centropa in 2000. Federico Alonso holds a master's degree in Literature from the University of Salamanca in Spain and studied American Literature at the University of Delaware. In Spain, he has worked in the field of education and has worked with Spanish educational administrations in the fields of foreign language teaching, bilingual programs and the use of new technology in the classroom. Federico Alonso is an Education Advisor for the Spanish Ministry of Education and is currently working for the Spanish Consulate in Miami. Todd McDermott anchors WPBF 25 News at 6:00 and 11:00 p.m. with Felicia Rodriguez. Previously, Todd anchored the weekday 5 p.m. newscast and weekend evening shows for the CBS flagship station in New York City, before taking over as main anchor at WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C. While in New York, McDermott did national correspondent work for the network, hosted the “CBS Early Show,” and anchored the CBS Morning News. He also previously anchored and reported at WMAR in Baltimore, KSNW in Wichita, Kansas, and KSNF in Joplin, Missouri. Todd, who brings a real passion for politics to WPBF 25, earned a political science degree from Canisius College in his hometown of Buffalo, N.Y. Travis J. Sherman is an Assistant News Director at WPBF, Channel 25 in West Palm Beach. He was part of the news team who spent a week in Cuba filming “Cuba Unlocked”. Professor Ediberto Roman holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. He was a Professor of Law at St. Thomas University in Miami before joining the law faculty of Florida International University in 2003 He has won the Professor of the Year Award at FIU twice and the Enma Tarafa Excellence Award. He also received FIU's 2013 Excellence in Research Award and is a fellow of the American Bar Association. Among Professor Roman's areas of expertise is immigration law. He is the author of the book "Those Damn Immigrants: America's Hysteria over Immigration" published by NYU Press as well as "Understanding Immigration". 5
