Instruct all students to look at the first word on the wall.
Read and spell the word aloud.
Have students read and spell the word in unison.
Write the word on the class board emphasizing correct form.
Read and spell the word as you write it.
5. Instruct students to write the word, using correct form, on their
Word Wall Practice Sheet.
6. Repeat all five steps for each word.
7. Following your lead, ask students to check each word for spelling
and proper form by drawing around the shape of each word.
Each day of the first week, repeat all steps using the same five to ten
words. The next week, add five to ten additional words and follow the
same procedures. At the end of the each week, practice and review previously studied words from the Word Wall.
(You may adapt the Word Wall Practice Sheet for use with more than five words or simply give each student two sheets.)
Choosing the Words!
Here are some ideas of how to choose the words each week for your Word Wall from this set.
•
•
•
•
•
Choose words that are most frequently used in your reading program.
Select words that your students often misspell.
Display words associated with students’ interests and activities.
Choose words that children often confuse with similar words.
Introduce additional words that have similar qualities such as same ending letter, beginning
letter, blends, theme, etc.
More Ideas!
As students progress in speaking, reading, writing and spelling, try some of the following ideas:
• Encourage students to clap their hands and snap their fingers in rhythm as they
spell the words.
• Locate the words in classroom reading books, library books, charts, etc. and ask
students to identify and read them aloud.
• Instruct students to use the Word Wall Word Cards as flash cards and quiz each other.
• Select one of the five words to be the “Word of the Day!” Find ways to use the word
in independent reading, listening activities and writing assignments.
• Instruct students to use all five words in their various writing assignments.
• Write a paragraph on the class board using the words from the Word Wall. Ask
students to rewrite the paragraph and circle the Word Wall Words they find.
• Ask students to arrange the Word Wall Word Cards to form complete sentences.
• Have students categorize the words in many different ways. Try some of these:
short vowels
long vowels
initial consonants
alphabetical order
double vowels
double consonants
number of syllables
beginning blends
ending blends
singular/plural
number of letters
parts of speech

Word Walls should be posted in a prominent place in
the classroom where students have access and can
easily view them from all areas of the room. One
important use of a Word Wall is to provide various
learning activities in which students can move the
words and organize them into categories. You could
use straight pins to display the words on your bulletin
board, but after time and use the word cards will
begin to look tattered. We suggest you cover your
classroom bulletin board with heavy felt and place
self-adhesive hook-and-loop fasteners on the back of
each word card. This way the cards can be moved
and reused again and again. The hook-and-loop
fasteners will not hinder the cards from being used
as flash cards or in a pocket chart.

A Word About the Words!
The words in this set were chosen as the most frequent words needed to speak, read, write and spell.
The shape of each word has a colorful frame to accentuate the ascenders and descenders. This method
of illustrating a word’s shape will help children distinguish the difference between confusing words like
want and what. The shapes will also provide a visual cue as students develop writing skills. Each card
is precut but you will need to snip apart those cards with more than one word.
Getting Started!
Begin by determining the abilities and skill levels of your students. You may need to have more than
one Word Wall in your classroom. As your student’s skills improve, introduce High Frequency Words
Level 2 and 3 and then Word Family Word Wall.
Display the alphabet cards on the Word Wall. Explain to your students that only important words will
be placed on the wall each week. (Most teachers find that choosing five to ten words per week is very
effective.) Place each word under the letter that begins the word as shown in the illustration above.
You are now ready to begin instruction.
